I go to Philly 3-4 times per year (as you may remember from when we met in D.C. 2 years ago). I'm sure some of the more local folk can offer more insight, but here are some touristy things I'd recommend for someone new to the city, that despite being touristy are still worth it: * Independence Hall * Liberty Bell * Betsy Ross House * Elfreth's Alley (oldest residential street in the U.S.) * Christ Church (first Episcopal church in the U.S., many famous early attendees * Ben Franklin's grave (at Christ Church Burial Ground, not adjacent to the church itself, but relatively close) * the Rocky steps in front of the Museum of Art * Reading Terminal Market (practically any kind of food imaginable is available there) * President's House (well, the foundation ruins of it anyway), where Benedict Arnold and later the first two U.S. Presidents lived before the capitol moved to D.C., adjacent to the Liberty Bell building Probably alot more that I'm not thinking of. Doing a music search for jazz - the only thing I noticed was Kurt Rosenwinkel at Chris' Jazz Cafe on the 9th & 10th. Non jazz - both Adele and Bruce Springsteen are playing that Friday night, in adjacent venues (Wells Fargo Ctr and Citizen's Bank Ballpark), so that's gonna be a mess around that area. Lumineers, Bruce Hornsby are also playing that night in other places. Adele is also playing Saturday night. Echo and the Bunnymen are playing at Union Transfer (I saw Beach House there back in March, cool club). Sunday night has Amos Lee, Widespread Panic in Philly. ZZ Top & Gov't Mule up in Bethlehem.

Not sure if this has been posted elsewhere on this board, if so I apologize in advance. There's a mammoth Pink Floyd box coming out soon - 27 discs, covering the years 65-72. It's listing at pinkfloyd.com currently for $550. Here's a link to the contents - it's almost too much to post here. Stuff that many thought would never see the light of day. http://www.pinkfloyd.com/news/pdfs/Complete_Early_Years_Box_Track_Listing.pdf (also, most of it will come out in individual smaller cd/dvd boxes in 2017, except for the bonus discs at the bottom of the listing.

I've met 3 NBA players (all Spurs at the time) - Danny Green (6' 6"), Sean Elliott (6' 8"), and the tallest of the three, Antoine "Big Dog" Carr (6 9"). Carr is shorter than both Rooks and Brian Williams (Bison Dele) though. Tragic and bizarre death for Williams/Dele on a boat in the South Pacific.

I don't think the Cavs are even the 2nd best team in the NBA. Warriors, then Spurs edging out OKC (who absolutely got hot at the right time) for 2nd, then the Cavs, 4th best.

My son has pointed out to me that I pronounce "both" with an "L" in the middle of it. Bolth. Now it's driving me crazy when I hear myself say it, but I can't seem to change. If I purposely say it without the L, it sounds like I'm pretending to speak British English or something.

I was about to make these same recommendations. Good choices! Oil on Canvas is also a good live album. Also, check out the Jansen/Barbieri/Karn albums, solo, in duets, and the trio. They're all very good too.

Happy Birthday, Mark!

Thank you! It's been a fine day so far, albeit at work. Home-cooked meal and an evening with my wife and kids later tonight. And I got to visit Austin this past weekend and see my mother, so that's always a good thing as she gets older. I appreciate the friendships I've made here, and the many discussions and hangs as well (miss the drunken Live Chat and listening sessions we used to have, those were a blast!). And thank you, Tim, for starting this thread.

Wouldn't make a difference to me. I only surf the board via the "New Posts" feature, or "Unread Content" now . So any threads that are new will show up in there regardless of the forum they're in. If most board members do this, then I'd wonder if the lack of response is for other reasons, not that the thread is buried amongst non-jazz threads.

Mark Hollis' career arc is fascinating. In a very small discography of 5 Talk Talk albums and 1 solo, he went from pure synth pop new-wave to a classic pop album, and then evolved from there into more improvisational, tranquil, minimalistic music. I don't listen to the first one very often, but the rest are wonderful albums. I wish Hollis had kept making music instead of disappearing off the face of the earth.

Soulstation1 put us all to shame this week! edit - well, one of the two Soulstation1's did, anyway.

It's topical. I don't see any posts in this thread discussing politics.

If it makes anyone feel any better, he's in our football pool and participating in it each week, to include the game going on tonight.

2015 MLB Season - Let's Play Two!
Aggie87 replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
For me as an Astros fan, Game 5 didn't hurt as much as Game 4, when their bullpen (really Harris & Sipp) cratered and gave up all of those late runs. They had the game and the series in the bag at that point. All in all it was a good season for Houston. Hopefully they can address some of their shortcomings and do better next year. It feels like "just wait til next year" instead of just saying that. -

Indeed. It's somewhere between ridiculous and ironic that Houston now has very good baseball and basketball teams, and a perpetually godawful football team, but guess who still gets the lion's share of viewership, let alone media coverage? I just saw a piece last week that claimed that almost twice as many people on average were watching Texans preseason games (featuring mostly second-stringers) than watched the Astros-Yankees wild card game. Football is king in Texas. 'Twas ever thus, and seemingly always will be, unfortunately for those of us who recognize the clear superiority of baseball. I know I'd watch more Astros games if it were possible with any of the cable providers in Corpus Christi, and so would many other fans in this area. This is an Astros market, but since the Astros have been on "Root Sports" and whatever it was before that, they simply aren't available here to watch. They used to be on Fox Sports all the time. So I can understand why the Astros tv market is small, even in Houston over that general timeframe, with some games getting a 0.0 viewership. What still doesn't make sense to me is why Houston is considered a small market for baseball when it's the 4th largest city in the nation. -
Lobos would definitely get my vote. Could probably make an argument for all 15 of those artists, they've all made contributions.

2015 MLB Season - Let's Play Two!

Keuchel had a high pitch count today, but looked great. I think he's continued the level of play from the regular season that has him as a front runner for the Cy Young. I think he deserves it. Colby Rasmus didn't hit a homer tonight (for the first time in the postseason), but he did hit one so high that it hit the rafters inside Minute Maid Park. Ended up being fair because neither the Royals right fielder or second baseman could react to the carom quickly enough. I think they said that hasn't happened in that Park before (or at least that Biggio, who was watching and commented, had never seen it happen). McCullers is on the mound tomorrow, hopefully the Astros bring their bats. -

Thanks! I'm still in shock about this season for the 'Stros so far. Exceeded my expectations and most fans, I think. The two times I saw Carlos Correa in person while he was with our local team this season, I never imagined he'd be playing in October *this year*. Dude only turned 21 two weeks ago. I'd love to see a competitive series against the Royals now!
