I believe the movie was named "Heavy Metal" because it was based on the comic magazine of the same name that was popular in those days - not because they intended to use heavy metal music as the soundtrack. The comic featured short stories/vignettes that were generally unrelated but often were sci-fi or fantasy related, and usually PG or maybe R rated on occasion. The movie did essentially the same thing, but connected the stories. So they used current or established rock musicians for the most part. Although Riggs and Trust were bands I wasn't aware of prior to the movie's release. As a side note, Jerry Riggs, the main guy from Riggs, is a guitar player in 38 Special now, and they play "Radar Rider" as a spotlight track for him.

You're pretty much spot-on. Per Wikipedia: "Blue Öyster Cult wrote and recorded a song called "Vengeance (The Pact)" for the film, but the producers declined to use the song because the lyrics provided a capsulized summary of the "Taarna" vignette. "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" was used instead." Re-reading the lyrics for Vengeance, it does essentially tell the story of Taarna, so I guess it makes sense that it wouldn't have been included.

That's a very good late BOC album there, I fully agree. I got to chat with Eric Bloom briefly about it back in January. It's a very good album IMO - part of a trilogy of sorts alongside Fripp's Exposure and Peter Gabriel's second album (aka "Scratch"). I'm not the biggest Hall fan around, though I do think he has a fine voice.

Daryl Hall - Sacred Songs

It was a "bonus album" that came with some versions of their album Variations on a Dream. It's really more a Bruce Soord solo album than a full band album. A good listen.

Tom Waits - Rain Dogs

It has the exact same setlist as the show I saw, so it must've been 2.5 as well lol. I think if they had continued the band and touring, they'd probably cut back the number of tracks from the C/C album, and maybe replace them with other older songs. But I'm guessing the show would still be roughly the same length. On the other hand, I saw them twice in 2009-10 (Houston & Philly), and they played the full Incident album that time, just like the full C/C album in '22. So who knows.

Ohh yeah! What's your verdict on this one? I saw the first show on the tour in 2022 in Toronto, and loved it. Was happy to see PT back together (well mostly - would've been nice if Colin Edwin had been involved, but whatever), but the show exceeded my expectations. I've got my vinyl set out to spin over the next couple days.

Caught RIckie Lee Jones on Friday night, followed by Kat Edmonson on Saturday. Rickie did well, but you can tell age has slowed her a bit. Kat's sort of a jazz/pop singer, originally from Texas but now based in New York. Her last album had guest appearances by Bill Frisell, Jaleel Shaw, and Avi Bortnick. Got to chat with her after the show for a bit, talking about our shared background in Austin.

It's a beautiful area! We spent a few days hiking in Joshua Tree National Park, which was stunning - far more beautiful than I expected. Felt like a giant Flintstones movie set, but real lol.

How do you like this one? I'm tempted to pick it up, but haven't yet. I kinda fell back in love with the Breeders after seeing them open for the Foo Fighters in Oct 2023.

I've been visiting Waterloo almost as long as I can remember being in and around Austin starting in the early 80's. I don't remember visiting the first location at all, but spent plenty of time at the second (and Tower and Technophilia, and later Stashus Mule in the 90's, if anyone remembers that hole in the wall). Sort of bittersweet to see it relocating, but at least it's still operating, and seems to be in good shape moving forward.
