I'm not sure which brand of coffee Horace drinks but it sure seems to have done him a world of good. Hearing that 'news' last night was utterly miserable for me and I'm sure for the many people around the world who love Horace and his music. I hope a lesson was learned as far as posting obit. threads based on something you heard from someone you 'think' would know. A few people owe Horace and his family and friends an apology. I note Jazzwise have done the decent thing.

I've been an admirer of Eno's output for over 30 years, 'Remain In Light' was the moment when I sat up and took notice. I thought that was a pretty staggering recording at the time -I was 18 and ravenous for any kind of musical adventure. After the equally impressive 'Bush Of Ghosts' came out it was really a matter of going through Eno's back catalogue as well as following the major contributions he made to the work of other people (with the notable exception of U2 who always bored me to tears). I'd still say the 4 'vocal' offerings from the 70's are the ones I find most satisfying. 'Before And After Science' was the very first l.p. I played on my very first 'proper' hi-fi set up, and boy did it sound good! I wouldn't be without Bowie's 'Berlin trilogy' either.

A belated Happy Birthday, keep on keepin' on..

92, that's a LOT of paradiddles. Been listening to his stuff a fair bit recently and really getting into it. A different drummer and no mistake. RIP, Chico.

Where has this thread been all my life..? Herbie Hancock: Maiden Over Duke Pearson: YooHoo! George Braith: Bitstream Joe Henderson: Commode For Joe Wayne Shorter: Windowcleaner Paul Chambers: All Your Base Are Belong On Top (Japan only release) Art Blakey: A Newt In Tunisia Johnny Griffin: The Constipation Lou Donaldson: Lou Lands (sequel to Lou Takes Off, rejected, released on King in Japan) Lee Morgan (and all BN completists): Search For Lou Lands ('cos it was only released on King in Japan) Yup, I'm milking it.

I discovered Nathan Davis on Dusko Goykovich's 'Swinging Macedonia'. He played quite a bit with Goykovich in Europe in the mid sixties, 'London by Night' is a product of that liason. 'Peace Treaty' got an (expensive) re-release on mini-lp CD in Japan a couple of years ago. Woody Shaw is in that outfit along with Kenny Clarke so it was a no-brainer for me. I don't see much stuff by Davis where I go shopping but he's someone l'd always want more of. If you don't have 'Swinging Macedonia' get it.

Original Japanese pressing on King Records with the obi. Pristine vinyl, sounds divine. Another King first pressing with obi in top notch condition. Will be playing this over the weekend.

I popped into a Tower Records branch in the Tokyo suburbs yesterday afternoon and picked up OTL and Speak No Evil. I'll be listening to them over the weekend along with my old McMaster copies from 1988 and the Toshiba 24 bit mini lp versions from 1999. I picked up a King Records copy of Speak No Evil recently in NM condition so plenty to listen for. The alternate take of Dance Cadaverous on SNE has a much clearer piano track IMO although this alternate is not previously unreleased. I might pick up Something Else and Unity when it appears but otherwise I'm well fixed for Blue Notes.

Satellite's gone.... R.I.P. Lou.

Just picked up a copy of 'Asante' today. Seems quite difficult to find a copy here in Tokyo. If it follows the same vein as 'Extensions' (I'm guessing it does), then it should be a welcome addition.

And Pete LaRoca's Turkish Women At The Bath. That's my favorite Gilmore (and some fine Chick Corea). Very unusual sounding date. As good as 'Basra'. 'Dancing Girls' is stunning, and yes a very spacey feel to the recording, especially LaRoca's drums.

I've got 30-odd Tyner albums from the all stages of his storied career. ' Sama Layuca' was a late addition for me and one I enjoyed immensely. 'New York Reunion' with Joe Henderson/Ron Carter/Al Foster is worth seeking out, Joe Henderson is fearsome on 'Ask Me Now'. The dates with Hutcherson are also strong. For me though, 'Inception' is just wonderful. That title track is just so forceful, and mesmerizing in a Powell-like way. I saw him in the mid-nineties at the Leeds Jazz Festival (now defunct). He was unaccompanied and gave a spellbinding performance. He'd break into a huge grin after every number. I think we all left that night with huge grins.

That's my kind of 'excited'. Perhaps 'engrossed' is my preferred state. Although for JSngry 'engorged' seems to fit the bill just as well...

The day I'm not excited by music is the day they bury me. I'm not gonna be hearing Monk's Blue Notes for the first time ever again or Hendrix or any of Mahler's symphonies but good music of any stripe still gives me a thrill. I'm 50, if that means anything.

No argument from me. Nice clean King Records pressing, sounds fabulous.

Another good one gone. Thanks for some wonderful music Mr Warren. R.I.P.

Thanks all the same, but I'm quite happy constructing my own reality. Although I'm sure there will be occasions when your reality and my opinions coincide.

For me it has always been a case of right town, wrong time. I discovered Mose at about the same time I got seriously interested in jazz, about 25 years ago. I recall how funky and knowing Young Man's Blues sounded. Not seeing him live is a definite regret. Stay healthy Mose and thanks for the words and music.

Happy Birthday Sonny, stay colossal!

It occurred to me after my post that yes, all the stuff we consume in the festive season starts life back in warmer weather. I'm out playing tennis while Kenny G. is putting the finishing touches to his latest dollop of multi-platinum pablum.

I'm a little surprised they would feel like recording Christmas songs in the middle of July, but who knows? 'Soulmates' is a wonderfull date, and Rouse had a top class outfit for it.
