  1. yeah - the Nice '71 one is well recorded IIRC. (I found the original concert poster for that Strata Gallery concert in a record store in Detroit a few years back). The playing on these Mwandishi gigs is very free - with a focus on afro-percussive elements rhythmically. Its a shame there is little in the way of electronics - they evidently did not bring along Patrick Gleeson & his synths for these gigs. KD
  2. "What I'd about kill to hear, is Herbie live in 1969, with "The Prisoner" band." good call... one my fave Herbie albums. I'd still like to hear the rest of this session too: Herbie Hancock Nonet Melvin Lastie (cor) Julian Priester (tb) Stanley Turrentine (ts) Pepper Adams (bars) Herbie Hancock (p) Billy Butler, Eric Gale (g) Bob Cranshaw (b) Bernard Purdie (d) Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, July 19, 1966 I asked MC about this session in the late 90's and he promised to revisit it which he evidently did as 1 track from it appeared on the Blue Note Sessions box set - 'Don't Even Go There'. Even though its fairly standard soul-jazz the other rejected tracks include a ballad and a blues so I'm curious. Getting back on-topic regarding the 70's material - I tried without success to get Warner Jazz in the UK interested in a full-on Mwandishi box-set some years ago. My idea was to include MWANDISHI (1971), CROSSINGS (1972) and in some joint-venture arrangement with Sony also license SEXTANT which pretty much completes the Mwandishi band studio output. Of course I suggested they try and find any previously unreleased material from these sessions - and also include the actual track 'CROSSINGS' which was a hybrid 3 minute cut made up from parts of the album with extra Gleeson synth overdubs and edited up into a 7" promo single. I think it also came out on the TREASURE CHEST compilation in the mid-70's. There is at least 1 release quality Live recording of this band (Nice?) that could also be included. But the icing on the cake for me was to include the never-released soundtrack Herbie did for The Spook Who Sat By the Door. Not sure if Herbie had signed to Columbia when he recorded this, but whoever owns it should release it if the masters exist. Needless to say this all fell on deaf ears. Not surprising really as it would probably take somebody like Cuscuna to produce something of this magnitude. But the demand would be there - especially for The Spook material, which has even been bootlegged with audio taken off the video. KD
  3. Oh, I said 'no trades' but i *REALLY* need that Andrew Hill Mosaic SELECT set, so if anybody has one they want to trade (unlikely I know) I'll take that as payment against any of these at whatever value Mosaic sell it for new. KD
  4. Don't know about 20% but I can throw in a free PVC sleeve protector...
  5. Hi Jay Jay yes... glad you liked the Hall of Fame. I've taken it down recently - just not enough time to update it... KD
  6. I don't have the ones you list - but I can tell you nearly all the ones I have compared to stereo vinyl editions are narrower in the stereo field. Some more so than others. On some its clear to hear the drums panned hard left on the original stereo vinyl issue - they are almost dead centre on the RVG remaster. I know some RVG's have come under fire for being too harsh and over-compressed, but I do think Van Gelder has gone for that particular 'crunchy - on the verge of distortion' sound that some of the original Mono vinyl editions have. Possibly it works better on some albums more than others - but overall I like the sound on most of them. I must also say the ballads are sounding better than ever - eg: Jackie McLean: A BALLAD FOR DOLL from Jackie's Bag... sounds more beautiful than ever, especially Kenny Drew. KD

  8. I'm in the process of selling my Blue Note vinyl and going with the current RVG and CONN re-issues. I was A/Bing some of the RVG's against my vinyl and I like the way Van Gelder has narrowed the stereo field (gives some of them more impact like the Mono vinyl editions), the brightness takes a bit of getting used to - and I can hear some compression working in places. I can live with all that but I noticed 2 little features that bothered me a little: Wayne Shorter: Infant Eyes... the first piano note isn't steady. Like the tape takes time to get to speed or something. Anybody else notice this? Less bothersome but noticeable is the RVG remaster of Lee Plus Three on Tyners 'Tender Moments' omits about 3 seconds of the bass intro. Its a fade-in intro so maybe again this is a beginning of tape reel problem? I guess using the original tape sources is going to throw up some of these problems. Has anybody noticed other examples like this? KD
  9. yeah - I'm mainly a classic 60's era Blue Note fan so nothing real early or stuff that isn't well documented I'm afraid... some nice bits though and the condition is super-nice. KD
  10. Hi forum just stumbled across the forum - lots of great Blue Note info! I've got a family to support nowadays so the days of owning Blue Note albums in every format imaginable is over. I'm happy enough with the recent CD remasters to let go some of my treasured vinyl. I've sold bits and pieces over the past few years including some nice Japanese only rarities like Bobby Hutcherson: Inner Glow, Wayne Shorter: The Collector, Jackie McLean: Street Singer, etc. Now its time for some heavyweight original US issues to go. My current eBay auction list has: TONY WILLIAMS: SPRING WAYNE SHORTER: ADAMS APPLE, JUJU, SPEAK NO EVIL, NIGHT DREAMER HERBIE HANCOCK: MAIDEN VOYAGE, EMPYREAN ISLES, SPEAK LIKE A CHILD, THE PRISONER STANLEY TURRENTINE: EASY WALKER McCOY TYNER: TENDER MOMENTS, THE REAL McCOY HORACE SILVER: CAPE VERDEAN BLUES, SONG FOR MY FATHER ART BLAKEY: A NIGHT IN TUNISIA DONALD BYRD: SLOW DRAG, FREE FORM, KOFI all originals in stunning condition (took me years to find some of these ultra-clean copies). Some Coltrane Impulse! and Atlantic originals + Walt Dickerson, etc too. A note about the prices. There is NO RESERVE on these but I have started the bidding at the prices I have seen recent similar issues reach on eBay (via the Popsike site). I've been a collector for years so you won't get a bargain with me but you will get superb copies which have been lovingly cared for and protected over the years. Pls check my feedback... I've managed to maintain a 100% record with over 1500 vinyl records shipped - which I'm very proud of. I tend to grade conservatively and try and detail every little defect to avoid any disappointment. I'm in the UK so I realise some of the US buyers are getting hit by the exchange rate these days - but I'm in no great hurry to sell and these albums are quite superb issues so I make no excuses for the prices of some. No trades. LINK: http://search.ebay.co.uk/_W0QQsassZdegiorgio If all goes well I will add many more over the forthcoming weeks. Thx for bandwidth and now this opening piece of jazzspam is over I will now go and make some contributions to this forum. KD
