Logical 'post-1965' contenders for U.S. RVG series
couw replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Re-issues
stick with McCoy and you come up with Expansions (1968), a very interesting date I think with a killer line up: Woody Shaw, tp; Gary Bartz, as; Wayne Shorter, ts; McCoy Tyner, p; Ron Carter, cello; Herbie Lewis, b; Freddie Waits, ds; This one has also been available on CD before. -
indeed! how about a picture of those Bambis grazing underneath your windowsill?

and when Sangrey says "totally completely opposite," he ain't fooling! I remember the discussion R_T links to above. The AotW was a good reason to revisit the album and the various well spoken and well informed opinions helped me to get to closer to the bottom of what had been nagging me about the first session on the disk.

seems the NE German provincial city I live in is a bit smaller than New York! I bet several of our "huge" churches fit into those skyscrapers.

Obscure Organ Dates that are available on cd

shut up! -
I gave Zimababwe another spin. This is a great, great record on which Ibrahim also plays soprano saxophone. Some songs are therefore without piano but with TWO horns (flute), very remarkable. It starts off with Kramat which I find one of Ibrahim's most beautiful tunes. The album has a real nice relaxed vibe to it with some mesmerising chanting and nice fat "african drums." This has been put out on CD by enja in the early nineties I believe, I have the LP myself.

raah, quick! close the eyes!!!! (can the post above mayhep be moved to the discussion thread?)

Same here. There seem to be very many "defining" takes on Monk tunes with Rouse on board. Monk with Rouse is somehow more Monk than without him. I remember many people heard some Monk vibe listening to Byrd in Hand when it was AotW. Rouse permeated that album with Monkishness. Weird indeed.

Now that is one I go back to quite often with joy and pride that I was clever enough to buy a Japanese LP when it was freshly reissued. I like Boland's rhythmic writing on this one very very much! If you wanna get rid of it, drop me a PM, please! That's the Golden 8 album right? I have always been very curious about that one. What's it like?

anyone have nice pics of andrew from the era? Mike wants two different covers...
-
can anyone point out the distortion somewhat more specific (w/ timings)? that way others (like me) can check against the TOCJ

good thing you reminded me, I still need to ask weizen to contribute some of his patented twists and turns. Hey, weizen if you're reading this! You can send your bill to Ed @ the Rivièra

I'm sure (& hope) others will come up with better ones, but this cover making thing needs to be kicked off if RT wants to get this on the market before Christmass

Sonic Boom is one of those albums I don't play that often and when I do I am always struck at how good it actually is. I played it last night and re-reading my comment above, I would probably have phrased it a bit different (hey, what are you doing now then couw?) The 1969 sextet session will certainly sit better with Sonic Boom as both have a much more extrovert character than the original Procrastinator. That is actually why I think many of us were enthusiastic about the idea of combining the session with the Sonic Boom reissue (this idea was born on this board and brought to Cuscuna by Kevin, alas proof no longer exists as the thread got deleted). It deserves to be heard, but it won't change your world. As Jim rightfully points out, is in Rajah land with other "lost sessions" like Taru and Standards. Unlike The Rajah and Taru (which I find a very uneven album with nonetheless great tunes), there are no sneeky little gems, like The Rajah's "A Pilgrim's Funny Farm" and Taru's "Haeschen." It's more like the equally nice-but-not-outstanding Standards date in that respect. Of course all this comparing amounts to nothing as I could easily attack my own assesment above. (What do you mean? You think there's only ONE good song on Taru?? ermmm.. no, of course not it's just that --- )

Yeah man. What are you doing anyhow? Running up and down all day, spending time sitting in your car, listening to this stuff and then going back into the house to type your impressions to this board... That's WEIRD man! :rsly:

maybe the audio snippets at cduniverse can help you here? cduniverse link to spectrum

I happen to like the session. It's rather straight ahead, fun stuff with some very memorable easy tunes. Some may say it's a bit bland. It fits well with Sonic Boom IMO. Anyhow, 20$ for this one seems steep to me unless you are a completist. Which apparantly you are not or you would already have had the Procrastinator TOCJ. I think the conns can be had cheaper than that. I saw prices of 13$ being mentioned on this board.

I did my first ever transfer yesterday and made a CDr of my Tolliver Allstar (aka Paperman) LP via my computer soundcard. It worked! It's easy! It's better than bad, it's good! My set up isn't too fancy but the result sounds very nice to these ears.

from their site I learned that there is more than just one answer to the all important question on the cover
