  1. I think he was "Hendu"
  2. Sonny Criss did a nice version!
  3. What a slippery slope. The Boswell Sisters and Mildred Bailey (with Paul Whitman) also recorded the tune. Do they get axed as well? What about other songs about the south that present an idyllic or idealized view of past times? I air a fair amount of music from the 1920s from what is sometimes referred to as "The People's Republic of Cambridge" (Massachusetts) and occasionally run into tunes with rather dated lyrics (Mississippi Mud, e.g.) from that and later eras. I find a comment acknowledging that the lyrics reflect a different sensibility and a different time puts the recording into a different perspective. Otherwise, a lot of good music would never be heard anymore.
  4. The return of Leon appears to be confirmed. I was surprised that he wasn't at Fenway for the ring ceremony last Tuesday. The Red Sox should be able to hide his bat in the lineup if the rest start hitting. One wonders how much Pedroia has left. He's not off to a good start. Tampa Bay could take the division, quite a feat given payroll considerations.
  5. It's Red Sox v. Yankees tonight, in NY. Red Sox not playing well. Generally bad starting pitching and not much hitting, with a few exceptions. There's a report that Blake Swihart was just designated for assignment. Christian Vasquez played second base yesterday. One wonders if Sandy Leon is headed back to catch.
  6. Benny Goodman and His Orchestra (Benny Goodman, vocal) (skip ad): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gP7t119mAMU
  7. There are air checks of other groups as well from the Panther Room in the Hotel Sherman. Bud Freeman and His Summa Cum Laude Orchestra, for example, comes to mind.
  8. Robinson Cano homered in his first at bat with the Mets.
  9. Any update to this thread? I'll be in Durham for a few days starting tomorrow for a conference and am wondering if there's anything noteworthy to check out.
  10. Thanks guys. It was a big one.
  11. Saw him conduct at Tanglewood several years ago. RIP.
  12. Odd that the article doesn't even mention the other (superior, IMHO) side that was recorded at the same session: "Dixieland Jass Band One-Step" (also issued as "Dixie Jass Band One-Step"). I aired it on Tuesday (on the 100th anniversary of its recording).
  13. Eddie Costa's "House of Blue Lights" was mentioned already, but it was years ago. It deserves another mention. These three by James Williams are nice: A few other nice ones from Ray Bryant:
  14. The Louis Cottrell album is wonderful. As I recall, the CD reissue adds a couple of tunes that were on a N.O. collection on Riverside.
  15. I wouldn't characterize it as a "scandal" but it certainly was controversial. It was about two years ago. Here's a link to the Boston Globe article: https://www.bostonglobe.com/lifestyle/names/2017/01/06/legendary-jazz-impresario-fred-taylor-fired-booker-scullers-jazz-club/wAfhng9pjMP6vxIleWD2zM/story.html
  16. The information came from Lord's discography. I guess the idea of it being an edited version of the Gene Norman recording doesn't pan out. So, who were these guys???
  17. This Rex label (there were several) was based on the west coast (LA/Hollywood). I assume that the names are all pseudonyms. Looking through Lord for versions of Perdido from the mid to late 1940s, I found this (see below). Is it possible that it's an edited version of of the Gene Norman item, perhaps with some of the solos eliminated? Can you post the sound file somewhere? >>> [N2833-16] Gene Norman Chuck Peterson (tp) Vic Dickenson (tb) Benny Carter (as) Charlie Barnet (ts) Dodo Marmarosa (p) Irving Ashby (g) Red Callender (b) Jackie Mills (d) Concert, Pasadena, CA, April 29, 1947 MM1000 Perdido (pt 1) Modern Hollywood 20-660, Crown CLP5008, Vogue (E)E2296, Jazz Selection (F)633, Swing House (E)SWH10, King (Jap)K18P-62509-61, Sounds of Yester Year (E)DSOY610 [CD] MM1001 Perdido (pt 2) (same issues) Note: Both above titles also on GNP Crescendo (Jap)KICJ-116/7 [CD]. Note: The performance of "Perdido" lasted a little over 9 minutes and it is in the form that it is heard on the CD release and on the Jubilee transcription. The original 78 and LP issues, though, were edited to remove Dickenson's solo and to cut Charlie's solo in half, resulting in the elimination of about 2 minutes of music. The 78 issue received master numbers 1000-1001 for parts 1 and 2. Both above titles also on GNP Crescendo (Jap)KICJ-116/7 [CD]. >>>
  18. Hi Mike,

I'm confused.  Isn't the Dexter Gordon box on Prestige 11 cds?  You have it listed as 16.  Is this the same box, and is that the right price?

    --- Jon

  19. Damn. Nice player. A date he co-led with Dick Sudhalter is also nice. It was issued first on Stomp Off and then later on Challenge (see below):
  20. I wish I could remember if he provided a specific example. I just remember his general comment about Fazola and thought I'd pass it along.
