  1. You are right. The logical leap with my "curator" comment was on the same level as the Kenny G citation. I guess I am getting down on myself as much as anyone. I have several Heid cds. He is amazing! I surely can see the utility in taking your inspiration from the masters, and working within a giving paradigm to further "work things out." I get the feeling sometimes, however, that such generations via synthesis can be a bit dusty. And, I wont agree that jazz is dead... (but of course, that all depends on one's definition(s))
  2. Why must you smear Charles again? Didn't Syracuse teach you anything??
  3. Oh yeah, LOL, I need one of those dancers at my gigs. Regarding Bill's stance on the state of jazz: I do agree with some of what he is saying... however, I think jumping from iconic players to Kenny G, in making his point, is, in part, tantamount to the making of a straw-man and a bit too easy. Of course, there will never be another Coltrane just as there will never be another you. Nostalgia is a disease I too can suffer from, but I have to keep looking around me and forward. It is about choice. It is easy to romanticize and idolize the dead; to wrap yourself up in the comfortable myths of the past. Quite another... to build your own living foundation. Oh I know, certain elements of the shared language are necessary, but to what extent and at what price? The jazz that I understand was more work-a-day and in the trenches so to speak. Yeah, it is different today. But guess what, everything is. I also believe it is nonsense to say that the only way to keep a genre of music around (notice I didn't say "alive" as he appears to think of jazz as dead) is to 'exclusively' pay homage to the masters. I am more excited about a player when he/she moves me without obvious citations. IMO, jazz (like any other definition) is neither dead nor alive, it is however, ever changing. He does say that it is his opinion and he is certainly entitled to it. But, let's remember who he is and how he got there. Not bathing for extended periods of time and obsessing over the past makes him a certain type of player. The not bathing could even serve as an allegory of sorts, but we'll let that slide. The point is, he an amazing player and a great living resource. I respect the man's talent immensely. IMO, he is a fascinating player and a walking book of history. He is necessary. I just hope he doesn't think he way is the only way... though I fear that he does. Museums usually don't require more than a few curators. My art is hopefully less dusty.
  4. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1dZ4ly5vnM Mr Bill Heid shares his personal philosophy of music. Not sure if I can concur, but I do give the man props for his skills.

  6. It just sounds as though there's a camera man under the anchor desk.

  8. Those videos are fantastic. I've got some Hopkins in my collection and was very inspired by him early on. Man, watching those videos makes we want to dig the records out and become inspired again. Stuff gives me serious goosebumps.
  9. How did this happen?! Congrats brohamage! She is beautiful.
  10. What do you have? I have a Tascam 388. I find a lot of the noise on my 388 comes from the onboard mic pres. Did some tests using other pres and since I am only tracking a few tracks the noise isn't bad. Not going to compare to Jim's Scully by any stretch of the imagination, but it might work. g
  11. Guess it depends on how cool you think Pink Floyd is. I believe the three of us were listening to different sorts of production at Jim's one night, and he put Echoes up... The production is vibey as hell...no denying that.
  12. "keyboard nerd thread drift." Good song title.
  13. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBBCJ68mC4c He was a pistol of a blues rock player. RIP Jeff.
  14. Holy Smokes!
  15. Yeah but we're better looking.. I was going to say you were less athletic looking...but we can go with "better."
  16. Thank you! (just noticed this)
  17. Jim, was wondering if you missed this one. We were talking about DRM downloads...maybe this next week we can figure it out. Also, wanted to mention that Change Our Ways is now on sale at www.cdbaby.com/rootdoctormusic itunes is going through some changes lately, wondering if they are upgrading the audio quality?
  18. Gotta throw Conn a (trom)bone now and then.... Too bony for me.
  19. THAT'S WERE JIMMY GOT THAT EXPRESSION!
  20. I hear this tragic story everyday and everywhere... but bear in mind the Esteban guitars are Latino and hyper-macho and seductive. Not all acoustics have such El Kabong tendencies.
  21. Right on.
  22. Not sure what the pinky thing is about..but I do know that many 70's rockers didn't use their pinky much. With that said, the hyper-vigilant music nerds will surface. You should have heard the comments in the lobby after the Genesis show I went to a few months back....oh man, were they funny. With that said, these guys sound tight and powerful on these youtube vids. I believe hanging out with Allison Kraus was good for ole Robert too...
  23. Amazing!!!
  24. http://www.blues.org/bluesmusicawards/nominees.php4 They call these awards the Blues Music Awards or BMAs for short. It was change a few years back from WC Handy and of course there was some controversy. Anyhooo, Soul Blues Album Of The Year Also includes heavies like Tad Robinson (now on Severn formerly on Delmark), The Holmes Brothers (On Alligator I believe)...so I am not holding my breath on actually winning...lol. To be acknowledged however is a HUGE honor. With that said, I am thinking about the next record... AND tweakin' my friend Jimmy along toward the next organissimo release...which will be awesome (I've already heard some of the tunes and they are smokin).
