Grant Green: under-estimated as Jazz artist, and Blue Note to blame?
sambrasa replied to Milestones's topic in Artists
I agree, but as there's exception to every rule, there was a brief moment in history where Attila Zoller dabbled in jazz-rock. Check out Wolfgang Dauner Et Cetera performance at Altena: https://www.discogs.com/release/9043491-Various-International-New-Jazz-Meeting-Burg-Altena-1972-1973 -
Some interesting recommendations here. Few more spring to mind: Jorge Amado - Guia Das Ruas E Dos Mistérios Da Cidade Do Salvador Da Bahia (with Egberto Gismonti's Academia de Danças) Michael Mantler - Hapless Child (with Robert Wyatt, Carla Bley, Terje Rypdal, Steve Swallow & Jack DeJohnette)

Pondered the spoken word albums, in jazz genre. Any recommendations. Some I enjoy: The Heinrich Heine album with Attila Zoller Quartet which was mentioned in German jazz topic recently. Masaomi Kondo with music by The Freedom Unity group: Skokubuchu-shi: Hitoribotchi no heya (植物誌 ひとりぼっちの部屋) https://www.discogs.com/release/6899411-近藤正臣-植物誌-ひとりぼっちの部屋 Jan Erik Wold with Jan Garbarek etc. several albums which are compiled here https://www.discogs.com/release/2609874-Jan-Erik-Vold-Vokal-The-Complete-Recordings-1966-1977

His quintet with Bob Berg, Joey Baron, Dave Kikoski and Dieter Ilg was good. These albums document it well.

German Jazz on MPS/Mood/Inakustik re-issues, etc

Attila Zoller made some good albums in Germany with German musicians. I like this one in particular: https://www.discogs.com/release/911862-Heinrich-Heine-Attila-Zoller-Lyrik-Und-Jazz -
And now this footage has seen official release: https://www.discogs.com/release/29245333-Jack-Bruce-Smiles-And-Grins-Broadcast-Sessions-1970-2001

Holy cow, here it is! Black Narcissus starts at 2:21:40 https://playlist.citr.ca/podcasting/audio/2019/The-Jazz-Show-39170-154902-February-18-21-03-00.mp3

Interesting thing about the "In Japan" album, it was 1st released in Japan under different title, "Henderson's Habiliment," which includes Black Narcissus that does not appear on western editions, but omits Out 'n In. Would be nice to see whole deal reissued. Funny the Japanese have not touched it even when their own top players are involved.

Comparing the LP and CD, LP version omits 2 of 3 tracks with Surman/Skidmore/Thelin, Sunrise and Mato Grosso Feio. I wager they did not want to do it a 3 LP set, but come on, those are the tracks that make this concert unique. Especially Mato Grosso Feio, such a beautiful Shorter composition, something that would fit right in on Native Dancer album, and with this nice angular early Weather Report sound to boot. CD it is for me, I guess.

...And It's Again, last track of Escalator Over The Hill, vinyl version. It has locked groove, which repeats endlessly.

Good albums, but already have them both.

Caved in and acquired the latest Zappas.

I like Ponty a lot, King Kong, his collaboration with Zappa, is a well-known classic. This one is less known but fabulous stuff still:

I have a soft spot for circa 1974 King Crimson so I've picked up some from this era. Got Toronto, Brescia, Pittsburgh, Heidelberg. All pressed CDs and great audio-wise (last three are recent Japanese reissues.) DMG Live web-site is a good place to decide which ones to get. https://www.dgmlive.com/albums/massey-hall-toronto

Unlikely as it seems, there is a time window during which Kirk could have heard this record. It was released in 1973, Kirk died in 1977. Actually I'm pondering what does Hermeto make of Rahsaan? I've never heard him mention Rahsaan in any interviews nor did he dedicate any music piece to him, afaik. And Hermeto is big on making musical dedications to other musicians, be it Miles, Cannonball, Gil Evans, Jaco, you name it.
