  1. I like Tord's albums well enough as they are (just don't listen to more than one at a time) but I can see the attraction of putting a rocket under him I'd never really thought about it like that but as I type I'm listening to Paul Bley's 'Ballads' (an essential ECM for me) and your description is spot on for a lot of Altschul's playing, not all of it as some is carrying the beat if only obliquely. And this album is from 1971.
  2. I think referring to The Roots, Monae, Collier and Spalding as nobodies probably says more about you than you think. One person's nobody is most definitely someone else's somebody. Sweeping dismissals like that really does no one any credit
  3. I seem to remember a similar thread from last year. I also think this is a good lineup, established names alongside newer artists that are taking Jazz into interesting directions
  4. I remember buying that when it was released. I must check the shelves to see if it survived subsequent clear outs
  5. Just catching up with this really sad news, I'm sorry to hear that Fiona will no longer be there to enjoy her listening sessions with you. For some reason the mentions of her in your posts always brought a smile to my face. A great companion departed, but on her own terms, and I hope your memories of all those hours together bring some solace. And what a great musical tribute to her too. An album I only recently discovered (I know) due to your enthusiasm for it here.
  6. Can't go wrong with Charles on ECM as far as I'm concerned, enjoy them
  7. Ron Jefferson Choir - s/t [Sam Records, France 2020, mono RE] Just following the mood
  8. I'd love to go to Den Bosch but not too sure I could be so disciplined as you @Pim Some great stuff there, the Jefferson is terrific, do you know the one that Sam Records reissued? It's an absolute gem.
  9. I'm yet to see him live but have enjoyed each of the albums.
  10. Just heard 'Summertime' from the RSD Hubbard on the radio, great sound and pretty fine performance too.
  11. Thanks for the tip. There was a time about 25 years ago when I nearly lived in the JT, had a 40th birthday celebration in there. Haven't been for years now. Mild is a beer that I used to drink, usually as mild & bitter, in my 20s but haven't seen any since I don't think. With you on milk stout, my current pub of choice often has a very nice one from Bristol but I can't remember the brewery.
  12. I can almost taste that, stout or porter are my beer choices too
  13. Maybe we should just ask them if they have a copy of the Complete Bill Barron Mosaic. That should sift the wheat from the chaff.
  14. That's a really interesting observation because my first impressions of the recording were that it had a seemingly narrow soundstage. That aside, it's a very good recording and the music is definitely fantastic, I wouldn't be without it
  15. Great shame
  16. I missed the news about Lever. He was a feature of my early teenage cricket watching on TV, that run up.
  17. Yes, but not at the self-styled "The Theatre of Dreams" complete with internal waterfall. But next door.
  18. Ambrose Akinmusire - Honey From A Winter Stone
  19. Fieldwork's earlier albums are very high quality, I'm very much looking forward to the new one
  20. Another big Another Timbre fan here too, music and design aesthetic
  21. Maybe so, I haven't heard about his sight loss or not, but the darker cover theory is definitely disproven by several recent examples - Wadada/Iyer, Anouar Brahem, Guidi/Brandon Lewis and there are more but I shan't belabour the point
  22. My copy is on the post. Initial streaming certainly suggests and album for these times, I would love to have heard that dual interview. Their previous recordings are wonderful too. Where Iyer does his best work these days to my ears, many others would say his trio but not for ne
  23. About 20 years ago Hazel Miller lived about 500 yards from me so I used to just pop round to make my purchases. She was a delight to deal with. I bought the Blue Notes box set and got a first hand history to give with it. She then moved out of the city to the coast.
