  1. I'm pretty happy with the 5-lp "The Great Prestige Recordings" box that Analogue Productions released in the late 90's, but I'm a sucker for a new cd box, particularly one containing a bonus disc. Re: Hoffman -- I've been quite pleased with the sound of the Miles XRCDs and hadn't thought about investing in the DCC versions -- until, that is, a few days ago when I heard his Evans 'Interplay' re-mastering. Woah!! I might need to saddle up and start tracking down some of those Miles (and Evans) ones.
  2. Basically a low key little residential area (w/well maintained 00's-20's townhouses) that's bordered by the State Dept., GWU (George Washington U), Georgetown and the Kennedy Center. Not a bad place to walk around....quick access to Georgetown ....10 blocks to the White House and so. It's not an area that's packed with accomodations and I can't tell you anything about the handful of hotels and/or guest quarters that are located there....but I'd recommend it.
  3. You should stock up on some. I mean, anything to replace those fifths of 70's 'vintage' Black Velvet you keep trying to pawn off on the guests.
  4. Good God!! You were sent out to Telegraph Road?? Who did you piss off to get sent out there?? Solzenhitsyn said he'd rather get dropped back into a labor camp in the permafrost belt that go out there!! Catesta would wander out there and they'd find his bleached bones lying in the woods 6 months later!! Poor lad....no food...no water....bears got him. * * I drop the kids at piano lessons once a week a mile up from that House-o-chow.
  5. What a pansy. Doesn't he know that women don't like to date wusses?
  6. Truthfully, if I was coming to DC for the first time, rather than hitting VA or MD, I'd do that as well. A nice place to stay is the Henley Park Hotel over on Mass and 9th, NW. They've got a nice little jazz lounge and have someone in there on weekends. Restaurant is also quite good. The weekend rates for a small room are okay too. The other place is the Hotel George up on Capitol Hill....excellent boutique hotel, outstanding restauarnt 'Bistro Bis'...had dinner there on Wed. night. It'll set ya back a few bucks, but.....
  7. ......view from my upper porch down the street from 'super depressing' crystal city.
  8. ...bars & stuff looking toward Crystal city..
  9. Super-depressing?? I can't let you get away with that...you, you, you Northern VA hater, you! Well, I guess he hasn't rolled through in awhile, 'cause, miraculously, all the 'high-rises' have shrunk down to 14 stories. I just went out for a sandwich and shot these quick pics standing in the main drag (Rt.1) that runs through it. Hey, is it paradise? Well, I'd rather recommend the Four Seasons in Georgetown, or the Hay Adams down by the White House for $400+ a night --- but if someone's looking for a good jump off point that's 10 minutes away, has a good place to catch a pint at night (Mackey's Public House), or some decent food after wandering the Smithsonian all day (McCormicK & Schmicks, Jaleo, Morton's, Ted Turners, Legal Seafood, Ruth's Chris, or any of the dozen places on 23rd street) this isn't a bad place to hang. Geez, if Catesta was in town tonite, he could go see the Average White Band playing at the Birchmere down the street. Bertrand, Did you go see John Hicks when he was at Twins in Feb?
  10. Chris, you should stay in Crystal City. In addition to the Hyatt, there are another 10-12 hotels clustered nearby in a 3 block radius (take your pick: Radisson, Embassy Suites, Sheraton, Doubletree, Holiday Inn, Marriot, Days Inn, etc) and most will have decent weekend rates. There are 2 metro lines Yellow & Blue that'll get you in and out of DC in 10-12 minutes. If you're flying into Reagan National, you can walk to these hotels in 15 minutes or less. I'm a mile from that Hyatt. Take it from me, it can't get any easier. Send a PM if you need additional info.
  11. No wonder you post that silly crap in the political thread. If I was your wristwatch down yonder at least you would show up for appointments on time. But if you wore a Reptet Deluxe watch, you'd be so off the mark you'd still be pacing up and down Washington Street looking for the entrance to your old record shop.
  12. No Armstrong, Basie, Goodman, Tatum or Waller... .....1 Dizzy... ....1 Ellington... ......no Coltrane Impulse years... .....no Pharoah, Shepp or Ornette.... .....no post-'66 Miles..... ....nor SUN RA.....
  13. Can you ask him to work the magic and have it released as a mini-lp box? We're all tired of big clunky jewel box sets that cause the shelves to further bow.
  14. <<<But where stand the USA in this "scientific" top ten?>>>>> We're a relatively passive, non-competitive lot that likes to keep its distance from others and would never think to get involved in petty national rivalries. We do however have our own internal scorekeeping system that ranks various states & locales. All the smart people live in Minnesota, Wisconsin, New York and Northern Virginia. Everyone else could move to Serbia and it wouldn't affect the IQ charts one iota. Hmm, is it 'affect' or 'effect'?? ....'effect' or 'affect'????
  15. Charles, Thanks for the info. I'll probably go for the first 4 on that list...probably add the Nimmer as well. Coincidentally, I had an opportunity to chat up the issue of Venus vinyl and future releases with a Venus recs exec who was at the Harold Mabern Trio show last night. I mentioned that Hazeltine record and he said it's probably over at the Jazz Record Center on W. 26th.....so I'll hoof it over there in a short while to have a look around. If I strike out, I'll be sure to follow your link. BTW, shoot me a quick pm if there's a particular record you're iso and I can try to track down for you. Last bit of info for whatever it's worth -- I expressed an interest in John Hicks and Trio San (execs daughter seemed quite pleased that I had their cd!) and he said he thought that Hicks would be back in the studio at some future date.
  16. Tonite- Kenny Barron Trio at the Vanguard. Fri- Harold Mabern Trio at The Kitano. Sat-Cedar Walton Trio at Smoke.
  17. An excellent idea. Too bad Mosaic doesn't offer something similar. They really should have arrangements with the handful of BBs out there that are hives of Mosaic related buzz/chatter.
  18. I always choose surface mail, which is usually as fast as airmail. That's sort of what I expected when I shipped off a package to a guy in Ireland on February 3. Last I heard, it still hadn't arrived. I'll NEVER go the surface route again.
  19. ( a fetish within a fetish - a subfetish ? ) Could you please pass along the catalogue # for that Hazeltine LP? Also, are there any particular LPs in this batch that you'd highly recommend? I'm waiting on the new Kuhn & NY Trio vinyl releases in April and might like to add in something from the list. Thanks. Mabern 'Fantasy' Walton 'Midnight Waltz' Mabern 'Don't Know Why' Kuhn 'Easy To Love'
  20. Thar she blows! It'll cost ya $21+shipping. http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/ASIN/B...1250858-3675529

  22. Send the woman that designed that rusting VW bug hulk out to hunt quail with 'you know who'?
