  1. Thank goodness we managed to break free from the British tyrants or today we'd all look like this!! ........but gimme a pint of Newcastle Brown anyday! ....Go Pats!
  2. That Gemini LP is a mixed bag....kinda grows on ya. Great lineup but I'm not sure that Julius adds alot to it. IMO, he sounds okay on the more relaxed tracks like 'Stockholm Sweetnin' and 'Con Alma' but trying to keep up with Spann's pickin during the 'Q's Dues Blues' intro sounds a bit ridiculous AFAIC... otherwise a decent track including his solo a bit later. I think he sounds best on 'Blues for Gemini' (Sam Jones too!!!) -- best number on the LP imo. BTW, do you still have the LP? Sounds like a left channel drop out (Spann) about 1 minute into 'Con Alma'??
  3. Yes, Mr. James Joyce Jr., they most certainly have do it!!!!
  4. Toward the end of regulation play, the announcer (here) said something about not having been all that impressed with Lehmann during the tournament. Hey, looked to me like he correctly 'read' every penalty kick.
  5. Is that Argentinian with raised arm in the picture attempting to land some sort of a blow? Looks like a little sissy boy.

  8. Just small addition to this method - to my experience it works for 78s made of shelac and not on vinyl pressings. When vinyl is distorted it can not be safely return to its original state withour distoration of the geometry of the disc. I haven't tried it w/78s but I have experimented with LPs and this been my experience as well. We had a long thread going about this way back on BNBB (think it was about one of my Hubbard W. 63rds?) and I proceeded to go to work on a couple of crappy records. Blazing Virginia sun, glass plates, ovens, incendiary bombs, etc ...tried it all and the end result was always groove distortion central!
  9. Has this ever been released on vinyl in Japan? .....or any other format for that matter?
  10. God God! A national emergency of epic proportion!! Throw them out of the country before they drink up the brew slated for export and we're left with nothing over here!!! From Mirror.co.uk: 28 June 2006 BEER WE GO Germans fear we are going to drink them dry By Jeremy Armstrong ENGLAND's massive army of World Cup fans is drinking Germany dry, it emerged yesterday. Breweries warned beer could run out before the final because of huge demand from our supporters. In Nuremberg, organisers revealed 70,000 England fans who flooded the city drank 1.2 MILLION pints of beer - an average of 17 pints each. Astonished bar keeper Herrmann Murr said: "Never have I seen so many drink so much in such little time." His bar at a fans' tent in the city ran out after they drained all 32 of his 50-litre (11 gallon) barrels. Herr Murr calculated Britons were shifting beer at a staggering rate of 200 pints per minute. City official Peter Murrmann said: "The English proved themselves world champs. They practically drank us dry." In Cologne, where England drew with Sweden, bottles and barrels of the local Kolsch beer ran out because so many English took them to campsites and parties. Stuttgart bar chiefs said an extra 900,000 pints were sunk last weekend where 60,000 fans partied before and after our 1-0 win over Ecuador. The Veltins brewery also revealed it has produced a record 418,000 gallons in a bid to keep up with demand. A spokesman said: "It is incredible how much is being drunk but the hardest thing for the breweries is keeping up with the thirst of the English." In Dortmund, where most fans for England's Gelsenkirchen clash against Portugal on Saturday are staying, the giant DAB brewery is bracing itself by ferrying in extra supplies to boost production.
  11. Incredible to me that they were unable to hatch a plan to properly tranquilize a 220 lb creature. This is dumber than dumb. Fed-Up Germany Kills Its Only Wild Bear By Craig Whitlock Washington Post Foreign Service Tuesday, June 27, 2006; Page A18 BERLIN, June 26 -- Until last month, Germans hadn't seen a wild bear in their country for more than 170 years. On Monday, they showed they still knew how to hunt. Bruno, a bear who had romped across southern Germany since migrating over the Alps from Italy six weeks ago, was shot by a Bavarian hunter at sunrise. Government officials had authorized the use of deadly force after they failed to take him alive with an assortment of tricks, including a pack of Finnish tracking dogs, tranquilizer darts and nonlethal traps imported from the United States. The bear's demise prompted an outcry from nature lovers and animal rights groups, including callers who left death threats at the offices of the Bavarian Hunting Association. Many accused Bavarian officials of overreacting and questioned why plans were suddenly dropped to capture Bruno and confine him to an animal park. "That is the stupidest of all solutions," Hubert Weinzierl, president of the German Environmental Protection Association, told reporters. "In other countries, humans and bears coexist in relative harmony. Only in Germany would he be liquidated." Bavarian authorities said they regretted the outcome but blamed Bruno for forcing their hand. They said the bear had failed to show enough fear or respect for humans and was repeatedly wandering into Alpine villages in search of food. "We tried everything to capture him alive," Otmar Bernhard, Bavaria's environmental undersecretary, said in a statement. "The shooting was inevitable, even though it was difficult for everyone." Authorities kept the identity of the hunter a secret to protect him from retribution. They also said little about the circumstances surrounding Bruno's death, except to say that an innkeeper had alerted them to the bear's presence on a mountainside in the district of Miesbach. The last straw for officials came over the weekend. On Saturday, the bear stood up on his hind legs and snarled at three overly curious hikers who saw him in the woods and tried to follow him, but got too close. Later that day, officials gave the go-ahead to a team of hunters. Although Bruno didn't hurt any people, he was accused of eating sheep and plundering beekeepers' hives. He also gave people a fright in the village of Kochel am See recently when he ambled around a cafe, sat on the stoop of the police station and snacked on a little girl's pet guinea pig. Bruno, who was 2 years old and weighed an estimated 220 pounds, was born in northern Italy into a family that was resettled there as part of a wildlife restoration program. Italy and Austria have encouraged the growth of their small bear populations and have programs to compensate farmers and others for bear-related losses. German officials said they weren't opposed to bears in principle, only misbehaving ones. "If a normal bear finds its way into Bavaria, it is cordially welcome," Bernhard said. Now that he is dead, Bruno is welcome, too. Plans are to stuff him and put him on display in a museum in Munich -- next to the remains of the last bear killed in Bavaria, in 1835.
  12. Ron, is he still on hold???? Please ask him to try to work some magic over there and see if they can't come out with a re-mastered 'Shelly Manne & His Men @ The Blackhawk' box!! That would be sweeeeeet!

  14. That seller is pretty sharp. You go the private auction route and it keeps everybody in the game (to a certain point) rather than having potential bidders simply bow out because they cruised by and saw so & so's name --- and knew right away that their own chances of winning just dropped by 90%.
  15. Damn straight! Just picked up a nice copy of Ronnell Bright's 'Bright Flight' from him.
  16. Re: Bill Evans Japan releases. Why does '@ Shelly's Manne-Hole' sometimes make the 'cut' in a re-issue program.......other times not? 1999 -- 20-bit K2 paper sleeve run: YES. 2005 -- 24-bit K2/HD paper sleeve run: NO. 2005 -- 20-bit K2 jewel box run: YES. 2006 -- 20-bit K2 paper sleeves: NO. Who's nuts? Me...or some guy named Mr. Suzuki who's running the re-issue program?
  17. Yes, decent list. I'm in for the Jim Hall and might even go ahead and pick up that 6-disc '100 Jazz Piano Standards' comp set (TOCJ-66351) w/Eddie Costa, Duke Pearson, Hank Jones, Eddie Higgins, Chick Corea, Ellington, etc. Heck, for $30, it would make a nice gift as well........2 copies might be the way to go on that.
  18. I feel like a fish swimming hard upstream here.....but I'll not be deterred. I'm not real big on musical adaptations and own very few, yet, I've grown to like this 'West Side Story' one a good bit. I rather enjoy Benjamen's bowed bass on "Lonely Town" as well as Flanagan's lovely spirited playing. That particular number has a lively bounce to it and is nice to listen to when you're out on your porch having an early evening glass of wine with your spouse. "Tonite" is another pleasant moderately swinging number with Elvin working the brushes and TF playing with some zip. Some excellent trio interplay imho. Side B is a good bit slower, and with the exception of the lightly swinging "Lucky to be Me" and "Glitter And Be Gay" it's definitely leaning more toward the laid-back late nite trio category --- but Flanagan consistently plays with a good deal of emotion on numbers like "It's Love" and "Make Our Garden Grow" (one track I actually don't much care for) and Jones brush work is excellent, as it is throughout the entire LP. Anyway, it was just a suggestion. I was just curious as to why it had been ping-ponging around in the Japanese jazz market for many years, but not available here. That's rather unusual for a BN TOCJ title. Here's what it looks like for those who might be curious (the LP cover is blue w/silhouette of the Manhattan skyline).
  19. So, you DO have it in your collection then, yes? Fine that it's not your cup of tea....it is mine....and I'm sure that, in the vast universe of 'hungry for unissued material' souls out there, more than 700 could be counted on to pony up the requisite funds to have a listen for themselves and bypass your and my weighty reviews.
  20. So a '59 trio date with Flanagan, Elvin Jones and Joe Benjamin that hasn't previously been released in the US and would be released as a BN will only sell 700? Interesting. How about the 2 riveting hours worth of Hill's solo piano that's in the works? Sales prediction on that one?
  21. Should heads roll for this?
