Hey Peter, she's up and running! This table is a big improvement over the Denon direct drive I've had for eons. I've been spinning Lucky Thompson's 'Lucky Strikes' several times over to let it all soak in! The only black mark in the equation is a bit of left front corner damage sustained during transit. You'll notice from the previous link that this wasn't there before. Aaargh! The BN in the picture is the first LP I spun on the Thorens -- $50 if you can guess the LP?

I was there as well (back by the control booth) ......it was a of a show. That opening number was something else, eh? Revis was on fire. The only thing that sucked is that I missed the encore 'cause I had to whip home and get the kids ready for bed. That's a weird venue for jazz with those long tables w/checkered tablecloths and all.....but it was well worth it. I can't believe that Peter Frampton's gonna be there next week (thought he'd vanished ages ago) -- and only $75 a ticket!

I have an 80's Denon direct drive and just purchased this Thorens last night from Vinyl Nirvana. Originally, I'd been looking for a refurbished AR ES-1 but .....well, stuff happens! So how'd I do? Anyone ever owned one of these units?

Tonite, saw the Branford Marsalis Quartet at the Birchmere in Alexandria, VA. Great show.....opened with 'Jack Baker' from the new CD (that Sumabitch'smokes!!!!!) as well as 'Fate' and 'Blackzilla' -- some bizarro Watts composition linked to his love of the old Godzilla film.

Yes, definitely!! I just picked up an eBay copy a couple of minutes ago. Also liked the sound of that Ruth Price w/Shelly Manne a good bit and found a copy over at Half.Com. Ghost, that Anita O'Day ('Sings the Most') is one of the few that I actually have....love it! The Irene Krall looks interesting. Alot of nice suggestions in each of the previous posts and I'll be referring back to this thread for quite some time. A good 8-10 jumped out at me -- that Beverly Kenney 'Sings for Playboys' for sure looks like one to check out, as does the Sarah Vaughan 'Swingin' Easy.' Oddly enough, JS, I do like the sound of that Betty Carter/Bryant cd and will probably get it as well......but you're correct about the Patty Waters. Thanks for all of the input.

I see alot of names popping up on eBay these days (Keely Smith, Helen Forrest, Teddy King, Beverly Kenney, Chris Connor, Maria Cole, Helen Grayco, Esther Philips, etc...) and realized that I have less than a handful of cds w/female vocalists and know next to nothing about the vast majority of them. Some of the cds I've seen on eBay featuring the above named have them singing with an orchestra -- but I'm really not interested (for the time being) in accompanying strings or larger groups and would rather hear some mid-late 50's through 60's 'live' or studio dates w/the singer and a trio or quartet. Any suggestions?
