Online source for turntable components
Son-of-a-Weizen replied to Peter Johnson's topic in Audio Talk
Peter, Have you contacted this guy in New Hampshire? He buys & sells them....has a few TD-160s listed on the online site. I bought a 147 from him about 4 years ago (have since sold and replaced with a Rega p3) http://www.vinylnirvana.com/ -
Charlie Parker 'Now's the Time'
Son-of-a-Weizen replied to Son-of-a-Weizen's topic in Recommendations
You make an interesting point. Can't say that I'm exactly fired up to hear the Parker & strings session....but it's probably the way to go. I assume you're talking about the 3-disc master takes box rather than the 10 disc box? -

The edition below is the one I've been eyeing....and it (or so I thought???) just contains tracks from 1953. The additional ones found on the edition you've mentioned are all from the late 40's aren't they? (Star Eyes, Blues, I'm In The Mood For Love, Bird, Celebrity, Ballade, Cardboard, Visa). Sorry that I was not totally clear about this from the outset. I should have posted these pictures earlier. -
Is there a particular cd version that outshines all others? I see a sizeable field of JPN and Euro reissues.....and then there's that dollar (used) copy over at Amazon. Maybe that's the one?

Steppenwolf, Gentle Giant and Peter Frampton at the Boston Garden in 1974. Jazz: Bobby Hutcherson at Sandy's Jazz Revival in Beverly, Mass ....late 70's.

Upcoming Lucky Thompson Select tracklisting
Son-of-a-Weizen replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Not quite true - sessions F, G, H and I appeared on the 1993 CD Tricotism, Impulse! GRD-135. F, G and H are on CD here: And so is session I. Looks as though 'A Lady's Vanity' is the only track on the Tricotism cd that will not be included in the new Select. ?? -
Some people find it soothing....like Mary Jane here, who simply adores the midgets!

What vinyl are you spinning right now??
Son-of-a-Weizen replied to wolff's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
My neighbor, bless her heart, just brought this LP to the door and said she picked it up this a.m. at a yard sale. Said she saw it and immediately thought of me and the jazz! Just finished listening to 'Big Daddy' (...is Alabameee bound) ....yeah boy...and some slick finger pickin' on 'After You're Gone!' From the liner notes: "The age of thirteen found him taking lessons on the baritone horn, and later he changed to trombone when his dad got one in a swap for a rusty .38 pistol." -
Hmmm,a non-mini lp that says "Tronto"....wonder if this one is a counterfeit (eBay seller in China)? Anyone here own this particular edition (VICJ-60023)?
-
Thought about hitting this at the last minute but was having an extended happy hour with the neighbors. How was it? decent crowd?

What are we up to now on the 'Gentle Ballads' front? Vol 4? They should have packaged that one up for release as a first-ever Venus box set!

Big Sale at Mosaic--3/17/10 through 3/31/10
Son-of-a-Weizen replied to Ron S's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Listened to cds 2 & 3 yesterday. Nice material.....the strings didn't -- as I had expected -- induce a seizure. Not totally pleased with the physical product though....specifically cd 2 which has all sorts of small cuts and pits on the surface as though it were dropped on the floor. Do you folks tend to call Mosaic for a replacement for something like this... or just live with it? -
Do you have a single favorite jazz performance?
Son-of-a-Weizen replied to colinmce's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Elvin Jones 'Pretty Brown' would be one of 'em. -

UPS and 'proof of delivery'
Son-of-a-Weizen replied to Son-of-a-Weizen's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
'waking'? ...heck, I've even pitched a -
I just got an e-mail 'proof of delivery' notice that a package had been left at the front door. Nothing there, I checked. This happened a couple of months ago and when I phoned UPS, they said that the drivers sometimes plug in the data early and that the package would arrive soon. It did, about 30 minutes later....as I expect this one will. But what a crock this 'Proof of Delivery' nonsense. Dear Customer, This notice serves as proof of delivery for the shipment listed below.

Hmm, hadn't seen this one. Where is it set? Pretty much a 'Battle of the Bulge' centric tale.. .....or some other locations like Hurtgen Forest? Colmar Pocket? Aachen? etc?

Which BN McMasters sound better than the RVG?
Son-of-a-Weizen replied to trane_fanatic's topic in Re-issues
Hey, the 'which cd version sounds better?' conversations pop-up with the regularity of the 'remember when Aunt Millie had that kidney stone and cousin Stan's wife skinned her nose when she dove into the hotel fountain after downing 8 gin & tonics?' stories at all the family get togethers. Ya just have to nod and smile while thinking of ways to excuse yourself from the table so that you can head out to the kitchen and down the back steps for a relaxing glass of wine and a smoke while listening to the undeniably superior sounding 'Soul Station' RVG over the patio sound system. -
Nice system, Dave. Amazing that the combined Mac components you've listed cost about the same as my buddy is going to shell out (parts/labor/shipping) -- all because his wife got yanked off at their kid during her piano lesson last week.....then proceeded to kick a music stand, which fell over & crashed into his MA6900 amp, smashing the facial glass & damaging an output meter.

Which BN McMasters sound better than the RVG?
Son-of-a-Weizen replied to trane_fanatic's topic in Re-issues
I just listened to the McMaster & (J)RVG versions of 'Totem Pole'....and apart from some subtle differences in the low end (favoring the McMaster) "terrible" is not a word that springs to mind. God awful, maybe.......but not terrible! -
