I've had the Herbie Harper Sextet blaring away in my car for at least 6 weeks now and have decided that I should make an effort to try to scoop up some of his other material. I saw a blurb over on the AMG about the Complete Nocturne Recordings (Fresh Sounds) and despite the fact that they sort of downplayed the 2nd & 3rd discs, it looks like a real good one to go after...particularly with those Levy and Rowles trio sessions. I've seen the set over at the Fresh Sounds site at a reasonably price.......is it worth picking up? And how is the Virgil Gonsalves material? Never even heard of him.

David, don't know where that laundry list is either but from the first 25 that appeared in the series I think they are re-pressing: 9001 (adderley) 9002 (Clark) 9003 (blakey) 9004 (powell) 9005 (coltrane) 9006 (hancock) 9007 (clark) 9008 (morgan) 9009 (Blakey) birland 1 9010 (Blakey) birdland 2 9011 (Rollins) 9012 (Morgan) 9013 (McLean) 9022 (Miles) vol. 1 9023 (Miles (vol.2) 9025 (Dorham) 9029 (T. Jones) Noticeably absent are titles like Open Sesame, True Blue, Bass on Top, etc

Chris, FYI. http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...t=ST&f=14&t=678 Maybe the moderator actually locked the thread down because of your snappy photo? You & Berigan should form an ad agency.

Your observation is not true.. I wrote a satirical entry on this bulletin board and it was censored by B3er. Then they sent an E-Mail and told me "to consider a different jazz bulletin board". I have never posted an entry on this bulletin board since then although I still browse occasionally. Interesting, although I'm sure they had a good reason to delete or censor what you may have posted. You are the first person I've heard of who has actually been censored on this board. I've heard of threads being deleted and whatnot but only because their function was basically no longer serving a purpose (eg. Offering and Looking For threads). Jimmy Gee is correct about this and I remember exactly when it happend and also thinking it was a bit odd that the thread was shut down because..........well, just scroll back through the political threads to April 10 and you'll find his. Kind of funny actually ------ picture Johnny, Catesta, Albertson, Weizen, Ron, Berigan, Moose, Alex, Dan & Conn500 all jammed into an apartment living room yelling, drinking, turning over furniture, smoking and fighting about political stuff 'till 4:00 am on a weekday and nothing happens........but then Jimmy puts his trash can out on the curb a day early and gets served with an eviction notice.

For the umpteenth time -- Harold Land "Take Aim". If BN can work the magic on Mobley's "Flip" LP --which is one of the 'tinniest' sounding recordings I've ever heard --and spit that out as a Connoisseur, 'Take Aim' should be mere child's play for them. -
I haven't yet hit a Hope disc that I disliked. There's one I've been spinning lately called "Sounds From Rikers Island" from '63 or '64 that made it to cd in Japan (Century Records) in the late 80's and features a larger group including John Gilmore (ts), Fred Douglass (as), Lawrence Jackson (tp), Philly Joe, and a few others (even Earl Coleman belting out a couple of numbers that to my untrained ear aren't anything to write home about). This is certainly no RVG recording....but it swings along nicely and Hope sounds pretty good on tracks like "Ecstasy", "Trippin" and my personal favorite, "Kevin".

I fail to understand why people are so keen on things like ignore functions. These types of cyber boards are supposed to be an eclectic combination of substance, non-substance, serious, half-baked, humorous and irritating stuff -- so putting filters in place seems to defeat the whole spirit of the thing (imo). I skim just about everything that is available regardless of who the author is. Some of the more interesting factoids I've picked up were submitted by people that I'd like to see drinking Billy Beer for an eternity.

Oh okay, I'd never checked out the domestic set and the TOCJs are without "Chant", "Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" and "Theme from Mr. Lucky". Sounds like this upcoming 1/2 Note set will be a good one to pick up.

Hey, I kinda feel for the kid.....I'd rant & rave too if I my father insisted on taking me and my buddies to some Count Basie reunion concert for my birthday rather than that Limp Bizkit show we're dying to hit.

That Bryd Half Note Vol. 2 will have a few extra tracks on it. Anyone know if these will actually be new/different titles or just alt. takes?

First Evans vinyl I ever purchased was that other Milestone two-fer from '82 called "The 'Interplay' Sessions"....with the Zoot Sims session and all ("Loose Bloose", etc...). Great stuff! -
Aw come on Chris.....you had a good one with the "AARP" comment & there's no need to follow the lead of others and come back to take a personal shot.

Drop Tanno a line...he found one for me a few months ago.

It's fun to be the first guy to show up at the birth of a new poll... right after the author has voted. You voted for that Conn 500? I just sold off the JRVG of that one...yech!. -
I disagree --- tracks like 'The Lover' (which would actually be an excellent closing number for a Byrd radio show imo) and 'Secret Love' from Slow Drag deserve a bit better than a plain 'ol "nice". The title track is a bit weak though.

Looks like some great sessions with Rivers, Mobley, Washington, etc. on the horns.......I think I'll buy the set just as soon as someone develops some pc software that'll both eliminate clicks as well as the organ from a recording.

<<<<<My first thought was, "They let people like that have kids?">>>> What an elitist !!! BTW, Tubes fans wrote the original book on child rearing...didn't you know? <<<<<I don't know that I've ever actually heard the Tubes. >>>> I'm a bit surprised to hear that.......thought the "arch parodists of the consumer society" would have been right up your alley?

Does anyone know if any of the The Tubes first three lps (on A&M) ever appeared in mini-lp format -- 'Young & Rich", "The Tubes", "Now"......or even "Remote Control".
