  1. I bet that 'plane wreck' is better than Byrd's 'Street Lady' by an order of magnitude.
  2. <<<By the way, I called Friday AFTER the first set and they couldn't tell me who was in the band. Of course, Wallace only announced it at the beginning and end of each set. Blues Alley is a fucked-up joint in many ways.>>> I know what you mean. During the Curtis Fuller show it took some 30 minutes for someone to pass me a note with the name of the trumpet player scribbled on it (Donvonte McCoy). I wasn't expecting 'snap too' service or anything but the funny thing was that she said she'd had a difficult time finding anyone in the 'back' who actually knew. I dunno, maybe that's not all that odd? <<<<I love the way we totally derailed this thread.>>>> Too true......I suppose we should bug out & refrain from offering up thorough critiques of the chips & salsa and assorted beverages that they serve in there.
  3. <<<<I was sitting against the middle partition (so I got to hear all the dropped dishes - I think last night was a record). >>>> Yes, that's for sure!! <<<I agree that Val Jeanty, the turntablist, was quite a good looker. What silky blonde hair? She wore a knit cap the whole night! >>>> Yes, she was a looker...........but I was actually talking about a patron who was seated directly in front of me at another table. That would be great if you could post any setlist info that you get from your friend.
  4. Fire up a Camel and gaze at the ceiling.
  5. Bridge Street Books on 'M' Street next to the Four Seasons in Georgetown.
  6. BTW, Bertrand......I didn't recognize that one uptempo number that really showcased the bass player. I think it was the 3rd song. Did you happen to catch the name? That was truly !
  7. Really? I was at the 8....you? I was sitting at the table for three right next to the stairwell up (I like that table). Roney was great...but did you notice (assuming you were at the 8 show) how he suddenly started frowning at the end of the first number? No question about..pointing to his ear and shaking his head....he was clearly unhappy at the way things were 'gelling' and I figured it was that turntable biz gone bad. I really thought that turntable was an annoying distraction, as did the other two seated at my table. Then again, that woman in the red top (back facing me) with the silky blonde hair who kept slowly stroking it all night long was a 'berry, berry good' distraction. Say, you weren't the guy w/shaved head & leather jacket next to her, were you? As for Allen, when she was playing the piano, she was her usual magnificant self.....I just don't like the fender rhodes. The bass player was tremendous. All and all, the last 2 numbers (w/that lovely ballad) was what I'd really hoped to see when I walked through the door.
  8. "Emulate"..."highly developed group interaction". Sounds like what the Wallace Roney Sextet tried to do at the show tonite .....the original Miles tutored clone isn't he? When I see Geri Allen banging away on the fender rhodes and the others trying to interact with the woman spinning a silly turntable for a couple of tunes from the 'Prototype' Lp, I think 2nd rate. I'll take the Cox stuff any day. B-)
  9. Why are they considered to be 2nd rate?
  10. No info on the French Jazz Trio??? ...this can't be!!! Is this the Georges Arvanitas Trio in disguise?? Where's Brownie? Don't tell me he's gone off to yet another reunion and is stumbling around Algiers again in his tight fitting old Legionnaire uniform with a bottle of Blanc de Noirs in one hand and a Diplomaticos in the other? ** if he's not around, Claude will do nicely..........after all, those well-to-do Luxembourgers are all in that French cultural orbit anyway. B-)
  11. Even though the three LPs were purchased by 'thesquaresaol' on different dates, it's quite odd to see an 'A+' sandwiched in between 2 negatives. That's a first.
  12. Why that rat!! I'll fix him!! It's IRS audit time! B-) Seriously, aren't there 6 tracks per lp? If the source of these burns worked a little magic and did some creative fading here & there, he did a decent job. Introducing 4:43 5:26 6:05 5:50 10:40 8:28 40.32 Multidirections 5:21 6:01 6:41 9:51 4:57 5:04 37:15
  13. I get 77:47 ....where's the disconnect?
  14. For several years, the spousal unit & I made the rounds and played most of those courts. Do you ever remember looking out the window and seeing an off-balance idiot swinging the racquet while clutching a Beck's in the other hand? HELLO!! B-) Any chance that Jamie Gallagher was a neighbor of yours?
  15. I met 'Free for All' there last year when he played. I think the trio they paired him with ** were members of the US Army Band. Only problem getting into Ft. Myers is a royal pain w/security and all....sure was that day. ** that poor ettiquette on my part? would it be better to say "trio that was offered a unique once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play opposite him?
  16. Ah, yes...we're getting warmer. I'd say you're sandwiched in between Courthouse Plaza and Ft. Meyer. Not bad. Good jump-off points (Washington Blvd, Wilson Blvd, #50) to help ya 'fan out' and get the heck out of Dodge.
  17. RonS, is on the money here!! Small world, Ron...we had a place in N. Fairlington (27th Road) during the 80's and sold in '93. Those places went like hotcakes....think we we had two contracts the day we listed. Remember when you'd come down the hill into Shirlington and that Masters Tuxedo was on the left..and that crummy Goodyear tire place and the vacant lot? That's all changed. Shirlington Village proper was nice before....but they've continued to spruce it up and turned it into a magnet. The Carlyle Grand had a major facelift awhile back and is quite nice...they've got some big condo/apt development going in next to the theater as well. I'll bet you used to wander across King Street for some New Orleans-style chow over at Copeland's, eh? Blackened catfish & beans? Did you work on the Hill? I swear, if someone nuked Fairlington, they'd take out 1/3 of the Hill staff.
  18. Oh! Well, um........there's a nice little hardware store over there on Wilson Blvd. You can leave your pruning shears off there for sharpening and then mosey on up the block for some 'Red, Hot & Blue' takeout ribs.
  19. You're absolutely correct!! IMO, the forum to get rid of is this angst ridden one. This is the place that all the Jr. tinkerers and micro-managers come to carp and give us their latest 'suggestions' and grand visions about how this little BB of a world should be run. You want to talk about "polarization" and "uncivility rearing it's ugly head", then look no further than the forum discussion water cooler where folks routinely gather to point fingers, gnash teeth, etc.. A wide variety of opinions about Marsalis, Bush and Krispy Kreme donuts is one thing..........bodies hovering around the conference table, latest edition of 'Blueprint for Successful Board Management' in hand, is quite another.
  20. I don't think Bertrand gets out much....he seems to have missed all the fine strip malls and assorted clutter up there in the good 'ol Wheaton area from University Blvd and beyond.
  21. Damn, and here I thought DizzySpiels was my weizen beer drinking Dutch pal who'll go to his grave convinced that there's something not quite right with the Cuozzo 'Mighty Mike' sonics.
  22. Oh come on, don't give me that! You know perfectly well that you got it by following Abbie Hoffman's record LP procurement instructions in Steal This Book.
  23. If it's Pentagon City, the entrance is outside the Nordstroms. Sounds like you might be in one of those neighborhoods between Pentagon City and 23rd street. Nice little area.....lot's of restaurants on 23rd street and on the backside of Crystal City (Crystal Drive) facing nat. airport....not to mention all the joints located inside the Crystal Underground & over in the courtyard of the Pentagon Row (Sine is a good Irish Pub).
