For someone who doesn't own the massive 18-CD Mosaic set, which of these 3-CD sets would be the most recommended from Trio enthusiasts? I assume there's overlap in both cases.

You guys make me want to order both sets just to find out which numbers I'll get. I think Mosaic, prior to outsourcing their shipping department last year, guaranteed sequential ordering of the black box sets, unless of course you just happened to be given a recycled set (i.e., where a customer exercised the 30-day return policy). The receipt that accompanied the set would include the serial number. Now the receipts don't come with serial numbers and we're finding more and more cases of near-limit numbers with apparently no cause for concern of those sets selling out. The booklets are still hand-numbered at the time of sale (except for the most recently released sets, which are now machine-generated), so perhaps it's the serial-number-generating software that's to blame.

This was a somewhat music-light Christmas season for me. I played Santa to myself with the Chick Corea and Sonny Rollins box sets advertised in the box bargains thread. My eldest daughter took credit for wrapping up and reimbursing me for the Corea set. Listening to it now.

That's not cool.... doesn't sound like newberry. They have a good reputation around here. I ordered mine the same day as you and received it in a box a week later. Strange.

My company always shuts down between Christmas and New Years. It replaces all the smaller holidays we don't get during the year (MLK, President's, Cesar Chavez, Columbus, Veteran's). Back to work on the 3rd.

Yeah, sorry that "sale" is a joke. Yah, these guys want $2,000 for the first two Commodore volumes used, whereas all 3 volumes sealed sold for $1,100 a month ago, as documented on the eBay thread. I'd say you're right.

Make a copy for yourself to keep. Larry did the notes and they're worth reading and rereading. Besides this one, I'd be interested in knowing which O members wrote which Mosaic booklets. I'll definitely give them a re-read!

Sounds to me like Gigi Gryce could be the perfect vehicle for Mosaic to introduce another black box hard bop set, which we haven't seen for some time. Seems free jazz and old fogey jazz are ruling the day over there, with the one exception being Ahmad Jamal. This will be the first Christmas in 4 years where Mosaic is not on my wish list.

That seems like a tenuous line being applied here. Who's to say this is an illegal bootleg? The original link was to Amazon. It shows it as an import from the label Ais. It's even being offered with Free Super Saver Shipping. I'm sure if Amazon was aware it was selling illegal goods, it would shut the page down, no?
