  1. This news item might be of interest to those who remember the classic album Siembra (1978) by Ruben Blades and Willie Colon. "Willie Colón expressed his discontent with the organizers of the 2024 Grammys, due to the award given to the album Sowing [Siembra]: 45th Anniversary in the category of best tropical album. The musician and producer pointed out on his social networks that the new version of the album is “a clone” of the original release and regretted that the Academy has not recognized his contribution" https://euro.eseuro.com/music/2089276.html
  2. "My Song Is My Weapon" attempts to illustrate the long and varied history of Black sonic resistance in America. It is in no way an exhaustive survey of this history, but more so an examination of how Black people weaponized the one thing that could not be contained, enslaved, or silenced—their voices. The strategy of weaponizing sound reflected in these examples reflects the Africans’ knowledge of and belief in the vibrational power of the voice and how it could shape and/or alter the energy and purpose of the environments it inhabited. https://folkways.si.edu/playlists/my-song-is-my-weapon-the-long-sonic-history-of-black-resistance?mc_cid=e813a0c3fb&mc_eid=2c917bba9f

  10. “I’m trying to learn how to access things because, although I grew up on radio and record stores, that was a long time ago. I’m bumbling along.…But I think anyone would agree, no matter how much you’re old-school, that when you haven’t heard a song for 50 years, and you think, “How did that song go?”—and bang, there it is, right at your fingertips—that’s amazing. That could have taken six months to track down in the old days, though, arguably, that was a fun six months.” https://www.wsj.com/arts-culture/music/chrissie-hynde-pretenders-state-of-music-b346335c?st=k4yk3n2cr5mazih&reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink

  13. I now buy very few CDs per year - but when I do, it's because I very much want to listen to the music, and so yes I will listen to the entire CD on the day I bought it (but I might be listening while cooking and eating). The Hendrix Band of Gypsys boxset took more than one day.

  19. No young children keeping me awake - but I did stay awake many nights listening to an elderly relative (who has dementia) yell or talk throughout the night. There was always a young female nurse nearby, and I was there to help her lift the relative if necessary. I did not feel pity for myself, but I did wonder when wilI I be in bed with dementia, yelling throughout the night. By the way, there were also some brief occasional moments when the relative recognized me, and those moments were fantastic.
  20. I also do not blame him, but I stopped listening to Benson's albums when I saw the video of him roller skating on a sidewalk with a guitar in his hands (the video for his hit song, "Give Me the Night").
