Complete Dinah Washington on Mercury / Question
kulu se mama replied to kulu se mama's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
lon - i can always count on you. thanks for the help. -
i was lucky enough to find all seven volumes of this great set used. they are all in excellent condition, but i have a question that i hope someone here can answer. volume 1 has 3 booklets - liner notes in japanese, liner notes in english, and a lyric booklet. the remaining six volumes only have the liner notes in english. were they all released with 3 seperate booklets or just the first volume? thanks in advance.

i will know i will probably get flamed for being a dissenting voice, but in these tough times for musicians and record labels, i have no problem with anyone that blue note signs if it means that they will be profitable. they could sign black sabbath for all i care as long as they are still able to release albums from their prime. there is always the possibility that if they were to go under, maybe none of the reissues see the light of day. keep in mind that jazz makes up only about 3% of record sales, and that's including most of what we would not call jazz. besides, suzanne vega is talented. if you all you know is "luka," then you have missed out on a very interesting singer songwriter.

yeah, but only one note.

it's possible that it's a type of katydid. check 'em out on google to be sure. -
i find that many sellers have no idea what mint means. i list quite a few cd's on ebay, but i always list the condition as exellent. if it is mint i would rather underestimate the condition, and have the buyer be positively surprised. if anyone is overly concerned about the condition of an item, i always tell them that satisfaction is guaranteed. it is not typically worth arguing about. i have never had a cd returned, but i have been burned as a buyer quite a few times. i remember buying a stan getz box for something close to $100 that was supposed to be mint inside and out. the bot was torn, banged up, and had a big chunk missing where a price tag had been removed. the seller gave me $10 back, but i still felt ripped off. kevin - your only option on the feedback is to get the sellers personal information. you can do that on the site map page using the item number. if the personal information is not correct, then ebay must remove the negative. if the personal information is correct then you are unfortunately stuck with it. i recieved my 2 negatives from sellers in retrubution also. i have learned to live with them, although they drove me nutty at the time.

i still own the very first cd i ever bought, and i listened to it last night. "into the music" by van morrison. i bought it 1/2/86, the day after i bought my first cd player.

amazon is showing a 6/6 release date for what appears to be a box set entitled "The House That Trane Built: The Impulse Records Story." Does anyone know anything about this?

what a shame. i'm here in cincy and i listen, watch, and read the news every day, and this is the first i am hearing of this. oscar was a true national treasure. he will be greatly missed. r.i.p.

i am pretty sure that everything on the clifford box is now available as an rvg. anyone interested at this point will probably opt for the individual titles over the box set. not only are they supposedly superior in sound quality, but it's alos probably a cheaper option.

i don's usually watch this show, but the first contestant on american idol (a heavyweight sweaty black guy - who could not sing) just broke into "making plans for nigel." it just proves once again that you can never stereotype. i never would've guessed in a million years that he would sing xtc. he had to tell the three judges where the song came from.

i've found it easiest to fill in the squares where a number has to go (if that makes sense). i will find 3 - 8's that intersect in a square without an 8, that way i can usually find exactly where that 8 goes. i will do this for each number, and then i will start looking at which numbers are missing from each block or row. for some reason i have had much more trouble on the puzzles labeled "easy" or "gentle" than i have had on either moderat or hard puzzles. i have not attempted a "diabolical" or "evil" puzzle.

today's news on the ice website is a little info on the upcoming sidney bechet select: As one of the first recorded soloists in jazz (purportedly making it on to disc just months before Louis Armstrong), New Orleans native Sidney Bechet towers over the music’s history and remains one of its key figures. The clarinetist and soprano saxophonist influenced not only his early contemporaries Armstrong and Duke Ellington, but also had a profound impact on ’60s modernists John Coltrane, Steve Lacy and Albert Ayler, among others. On January 17, Mosaic Records unveils the latest in its three-disc, limited-edition Mosaic Select box sets, this one devoted to Bechet’s recordings spanning 1923 to 1947 for the Columbia family of labels, including OKeh, Variety and Vocalion. For the ultra-rare, mid-1920s material, much of it coming from Bechet’s apprenticeship in the Clarence Williams Blue Five, Mosaic went straight to the original metal parts and lacquer discs used at that time to record the material, all culled from collectors all over the world, and meticulously transferred and remastered them for the music’s best sound to date. Later material features the Crescent City reedman’s sideman appearances with the Noble Sissie Orchestra, as well as his first sessions as a leader for Columbia--septet recordings with protégé clarinetist Bob Wilber, who contributes insightful liners to the set. Finally, the 1947 recordings spotlight Bechet’s working quartet, which found the group exploring several popular songs by the likes of Cole Porter and Johnny Mercer, in addition to the traditional Dixieland-associated tunes that had been Bechet’s bread and butter. With a hefty 14 previously unissued takes tacked on to a lion’s share of rarities, this Mosaic Select box is a must-have for serious Bechet fanatics, but also serves as a great introduction to anyone interested in the roots of early jazz. The full track list (numbers in parentheses denote each of the tune’s separate takes): Disc One: Wild Cat Blues Kansas City Man Blues Atlanta Blues Kansas City Man Blues Irresistible Blues Jazzin' Babies Blues 'Tain't Nobody's Bus'ness If I Do New Orleans Hop Scop Blues Oh Daddy! i just received a shipment from yourmusic.com including a batch of verve lpr's. i've had great luck with these titles from yourmusic.com - they've all been regular store copies including obi's. of the new batch that i've just received only 1 (gabor szabo) appears to be a "store copy." all of the rest (pharoah sanders, oliver nelson, gato barbieri, and michael white) are not store copies, but have the bmg logo in place of the barcode, and they do not inlcude the obi strip. i was just wondering if this was true for anyone else that might have received these titles.

some new ones just showed up including the coltrane/monk, and veve lpr's by gato barbieri, oliver nelson, and pharoah sanders. the dexter gordon columbia never did show back up.

i just received a receipt from cduniverse for my reduced price purchase in august, so i am assuming that means it's shipping, and at the good price.

"tokyo live" is an excellent record. unfortunately, it won't be included on the select. it does go for big bucks on ebay (usually over $50). maybe if the select sells well, blue note will reissue it.

the company has not only been brought up on charges, but the owner has had $27 million in personal savings (assets) frozen. the better business bureau and the state of ohio attorney general's office have had more complaints about this company than any other company - ever.
