  1. i am having some work done around my house, and my contractor found an old book in the attic. i had no idea it was even there. my house is not that old (built in 1979), but it was built by a german builder for a german family. the book is from 1886 and it's titled "die gartenlande." it's over 900 pages and has many illustrations, but it is not a children's book. it appears to be a history/fable book. does anyone know what it might be?
  2. who got the highest number? i ordered saturday, and mine arrived today number 3134.
  3. i might be able to locate a copy of this with liner notes if anyone is looking for it.
  4. j and r music had this on their site for $11.98. i ordered 2, but they cancelled them. dang.
  5. did anyone else hear the interview with producer thom bell on fresh air today? that was one of the most enjoyable interviews i've heard in quite some time. he was very well spoken and quite funny, and his insights into the music of his place and time were quite informative.
  6. i felt like i had jumped back 5 years and i was watching dick lebau's bengals. ouch. i the loss was painful, but watching dillon score and gloat was even worse. i love chad, but i think his jokes might finally be working against him.
  7. i know most of you might be tapped out due to the recent concord sale, but wherehouse music is have a sale on their website. the code is "bigsale" and you get 30% off all used and new cd's and dvd's. their prices are not bad. i purchased "fearless leader" for $33.60, the new byrds box for $30.80, and the new fats waller box for $19.60. all brand new. this does not include shipping and taxes, but the shipping was only $6.95. if they have rvg's in stock they are only $6.70. enjoy.
  8. i wasn't sure wether to post this in this thread or the "little known in print classics," but since this one is newer i thought i would post it here. i picked up a cd yesterday that i knew nothing about, nor would i have ever known anything about had it not been in the used section. it's "tres palabras" by larry vuckovich. the band includes tom harrell, pete escovedo, larry grenadier, and eddie marshall. it was released on concord in 1990. wow! this is a great cd. it's not even listed in the penguin guide. it appears to still be in print and tom harrell is terrific throughout. if you're like me - this cd will come as a total (pleasant) surprise.
  9. somebody buy these - you will not be disappointed. (well 99 out of 100 people here will not be disappointed).
  10. dylan called his last one "love and theft" yet on "modern times" he borrowed the title from a charlie chaplan movie, he borrowed some lyrics from a civil war era poet, and he borrowed the album cover from a luna ep. go figure.
  11. at least i'll be a hero to my 2 dogs. they hate the chipmunk.
  12. i am sitting in my family room watching the bengals game, when i notice the whole flock of sparrows moves from my birdfeeders onto the patio with much squawking. then i notice a chipmunk running across the patio with a live sparrow in his mouth. i immediately ran out and chased the chipmunk who then dropped the sparrow and ran into his hole. the sparrow appears to be unharmed. i guess i have 2 questions - how do you imagine that the chipmunk had the opportunity to catch a bird, and what do you suppose the chipmunk was going to do with the bird? unless i am confused, i thought chipmunks ate mostly seeds and maybe some small insects.
  13. i recently found a couple of these boxe's factory sealed. there are no markings on them what-so-ever, how can i tell whether they are lp, cassette, or 8-track?
  14. i have to disagree witht the more popular opinions here. i saw the who in 2002 during their first tour without entwistle. i could not belive it, but they were freaking great. i could not imagine that they could possible be better. i have tickest for the detroit area show on this tour, and my hopes are high.
  15. did the rca box come in an actual box? i've only ever seen the 5 cd's in 2 double sized jewel cases.
  16. the one link that was posted takes you to an ebay auction where a guy is selling nude pictures of his ex for $4.50 with free shipping. he will include her email address, but you have to promise not to tell where you got it. way to go.
  17. i buy quite a few best of's - more popular music than jazz - they are great for long road trips. i get to hear music that i enjoy, and my wife doesn't have to hear music that she is not all that interested in.
  18. sad news about maynard. i enjoy his early work, but not much of his later work. i mean no disrespect (and this might not be the time nor forum), but his manager is quoted in the morning paper as saying there are no greats left - kenton, basie, ellington and maynard are gone. the quote might be out of context - he might be referring to band leaders and not just jazz musicians - but if he was referring to jazz musicians then i think a man known as sonny might disagree.
  19. take that you cardinal bastards! woohoo!
  20. paul, i am sorry to hear about your situation. i hope everything works out for the best. has your wife recently lost weight or fixed herself up in anyway. my wife is eerie at how she can predict a divorce. usually when a wife starts to lose weight there is another man on the side, even if no one expects it. good luck. bob
  21. jim - i think most of us can agree that your policing of the forum is fair and much appreciated. thanks for keeping the forum going and thanks for keeping it civil. it's your interest and care that keeps most of us coming back daily.
  22. i have a far side cartoon hanging in my office: it's the devil playing new age music's greatest hits to charlie parker. it's captioned something to the effect of "charlie parker's in hell."
