  1. what is the current promotion? also, does anyone know what the last catalog was? the last one i received was number 49, and i had to ask for that one. i've bought every set (more or less) since the don cherry set, and for some reason i have only received 1 of the last 8 catlogs without asking for it. i've asked over and over why this keeps happening, and all they can do is tell me i am in the computer, and i should be receiving a catlog.
  2. that story has been big news around here. front page of both papers and on all the evening news programs. it really is quite amazing.
  3. this is actually the first time i've ever "pimped" my stuff on any board. i was on the bnbb every day, but i never mentioned that i was selling on ebay. i've always been up in the air on this issue, but i guess i've landed on the side of "it's okay." i do understand some of the comments though.
  4. i've got some items on ebay right now, and a few of them are not doing as well as i thought they might. there are a few oop jazz titles that might interest some members. thanks for looking. bob i can't seem to get a link in here, so if you are interested do a search by my user id - rries
  5. if you have a discover card and are due a cash back bonus award, they will double it in border's gift certificates. you can request them in $20 incriments. for example - if you ask for $20 they will send you $40 and only deduct $20 from your total. that way, everything at border's is really 1/2 price. (it's actually even less, since the cash back bonus award is a gift from discover anyway).
  6. i was an english major, and "the sound and the fury" is my favorite book. the first time i read it, i had to stop 1/2 way through the benji section and start over. it gets easier each time you read it. for my money this is a very complicated love story. if you read it from the point of view (like the beatles said) that all you need is love - it makes perfect sense.
  7. i just picked up the "Verve Jazz Masters 50" by Sonny Stitt, and i am listening to it now. Why this collection is out of print i will never know. There is not a bad song on it, and i believe only about 2-3 of the 12 have been available elsewhere on cd. Mosaic ought to do a Sonny Stitt Verve collection.
  8. i made my wife go with me to a small club here last summer. she is not much of a music fan, and she absolutely loved it. she knew nothing going in, but the next day she made me give her some of my patti cd's for her car. the cool part during the concert - it was a small, loud, smoky club, and someone down in front brought their toddler. patti stopped the show mid song and made them leave. she explained that she loves kids, and this was no place for a kid. that was cool.
  9. an easier question is - which ones aren't you buying? i won't buy them all at once, but i will buy every single one of them. i was in a store this week, and they were playing an old copy of "blood on the tracks." sometimes i forget just how good that album is. there is nothing coming out today that could touch that record. much less is there any established artist working at that level. (now i sound like a fogey.)
  10. a sealed copy of "the all seeing eye" showed up at my local borders about 2 months ago. where was that when it was worth mucho denero? let me know if you are interestd.
  11. i see the missunderstanding now. there is a discrepancy between what soundscan counts and what the recording industry counts for gold and platinum status. thanks for clearing that up.
  12. just thought of another one that does not get mentioned enough - arthur alexander. his elektra album from the mid 90's was astounding.
  13. okay, i am disputing the 220,000 paying customers. i believe soundscan counts the number of cd's sold.
  14. i'm not disputing soundscans number of units sold, i'm clarifying that they count the number of cd's sold. so that the 220,000 units translates into only 73,000 paying customers. this was how garth brookes planned to outsell the beatles. he repackaged his first 6 releases into a 6 cd box, but it only had a $40+ list price. each box counted as 6 cd's. he also sold his 2 cd live cd for the price of a single cd. he's a tricky little bastard, but the beatles released "1," and now garth will never catch them.
  15. i would love to see the tubby hayes material get reissued. that is some wonderful music that should be heard by more people (and in better sound). and i will always cast my vote loudly and persistently for better treatment of the columbia basie material. the 3 cd's that out there now are a disgrace.
  16. i believe they count the actual number of cd's sold. so the 3 cd live set only moved 90,000 units. when you consider that it was possible to get as cheaply as $15, that may not be as impressive as it sounds. of course, i picked both of them up the day they came out.
  17. cheap-cd's has it for $31 and change including shipping.
  18. they appear to be back on line, and they also appear to have the lowest price on the miles davis 4 cd blackhawk set. $31+ including shipping. that's a good deal.
  19. let's hear it for etta james. the best living and the best ever. "at last" and "i'd rather go blind" are classics.
  20. cicuit city has the bes deal this week. buy both the 3 cd set and the 2 dvd set for $30. all of the circuit city's around me were sold out, but if you take the add to best buy, they will match the price. it's really hard to beat.
  21. this should be great. my favorite van album has not been mentioned. how about "into the music." this is an absolute classic. side 2 maybe the greatest side he has ever recorded. as an album, it definitely stands up there with "astral weeks" and "moondance." as far as an artist goes, i would say van has recorded at least 5 - 5 star records. (the 3 mentioned above, plus at least 2 of these "st dominics," "his band and treet choir" and "tueplo honey"). this puts van in very elite company (the beatles, rolling stones, maybe elvis costello - help me out here). even my favorite band (led zeppelin) might only have 3 - 5 star records. van did appear to coast from for awhile there, but in retrospect some of those albums were unnecessarily dismissed. "days like this" and "the healing game" are particularly good.
  22. thanks for the reply. that would explain an ever decreasing price for the item, but it does not explain a wild swing from $60 to $10 and then back up to $120. the only thing i might be able to surmise is that i posted it in jazz only. a couple of the others were posted in jazz and r and b.
  23. okay, here we go again. this is something i will never understand. i noticed that the self titled cd by george duke (released by elektra in 1986) usually fetches a decent price on ebay (recently in the $60 to $70 range). i was lucky enough to find a used copy recently, and put it up for auction. it garnered 1 bid for the opening price of $9.99. needless to say i was midly dissappointed (i could use that money to buy some real jazz), that is until i saw the exact same item go for over $120 on may 8th (just a little over a week since my auction ended). then i was majorly dissappointed. the big question is - where were all those people when my cd was sitting there for the taking? i have a very high positive feedback rating, but except for a few items i am usually in the bottom third on final selling price. i will never understand it. illegal bids can explain some of it, but not all of it.
  24. i have one box each from jsp and proper, but they seem to have many interesting titles. anyone care to make any recommendations on these boxes?
  25. i am looking for volume 14 of Rhino's 18 volume Blues Masters series. "More Jump Blues" is the full title. it is the only one i am missing. i can buy or trade for it. any help would be much appreciated.
