  1. ab, best of luck. hopefully you will have withdrawal and come back quicker than you expect.
  2. in the first episode of this season (tony's first out of the house), a bear comes out of the woods in back and carmella throws a fit. that might have even been the first scene this year. the last scene of the year has tony coming out of the very same woods and being welcomed home by carmella. also, tony told melfi that he is always making the wrong decision, and then he goes and makes the wrong decision on tony b.
  3. actually sellers are prohibited in passing these charges on to the buyer. the only way to cover it as a seller is to bump up the shipping charge ahead of time. if anyone comes across an auction where they are charged for these services, you can report that to ebay.
  4. one of the few real jazzers that has passed through these parts. i saw him a few and mal waldron in '94. the same day we made a bid on our house. it was quite exceptional. this is very sad news. good luck steve. he has to be on more jazz records than anyone else.
  5. i must admit i am not much of a dead fan and was not a garcia fan at all, but i managed to pick up this set (go figure). i can't really handle discs 4 and 5 (cats and roses), but the first 3 discs have not left my player in over 2 weeks. disc 1 is excellent and "sugaree" is now one of my all time favorite songs. i must be the anti-dead fan, because i prefer their studio work. my favorites are "working man's dead," "american beauty" and now the first garcia solo disc. and if i am not mistake they all 3 come from the same year (1971). i'm always amazed when bands get in a groove and all of their best work just comes in bunches.
  6. the new todd rundgren album is getting great reviews, but the cover is so bad i'm not sure that i will pick it up. i'm not sure how to post a picture, so maybe someone can help out.
  7. i remember recommending this one highly when it first came out. i bought his first 2 studio recordings, and enjoyed them both, but this live set is amazing. unfortunatey, although his first 2 were on a major lable (warner brothers), he never got the recognition he deserves.
  8. i agree with all of the criticisms of rush, and yet they remain one of my guilty pleasures. i grew up with rush, and while i can no longer listen to their early harder stuff, i do still own the middle period stuff (permanent waves to big money). i saw them on the permanent waves tour when they were one of my favorite bands and even at 15 i didn't like how they played each song as if they were in the studio recording it for an album. the lyrics are dopey, they take themselves far too seriously, and geddy lee can't sing, now i think i'll put on grace under pressure anyhow. go figure.
  9. i found this billboard article in the "ice" chatroom. i have to admit, this and the faces box (now pushed back to july) have me pretty excited. Unreleased Cuts Bolster Simon Boxed Set As first reported here last week, Warner Bros. will on June 29 release the nine-disc Paul Simon boxed set "The Studio Recordings 1972-2000." The set comprises the six albums the artist has recorded for Warner Bros. plus his first three post-Simon & Garfunkel solo releases, originally issued by Columbia. All nine albums have been digitally remastered and expanded with previously unreleased bonus cuts. Simon's 1972 self-titled solo debut is bolstered with demos of "Duncan" and "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard" recorded in February 1971 in San Francisco, plus a previously unreleased version of "Paranoia Blues." His 1973 sophomore set "There Goes Rhymin' Simon" will now include acoustic demos of "Take Me to the Mardi Gras" and "Loves Me Like a Rock," an unfinished run through "American Tune" and a work-in-progress rendition of "Let Me Live in Your City." Simon hit an artistic peak on 1975's "Still Crazy After All These Years," which reached No. 1 on The Billboard 200 and won the Grammy for album of the year. Bonus tracks on its new edition are demos of the No. 5 pop hit "Slip Slidin' Away" and "Gone at Last" with the Jessy Dixon Singers and the track "Silent Eyes" from the film "Shampoo." The artist then took a nearly five-year break and signed a new deal with Warner Bros. for the 1980 release of the soundtrack to his film "One Trick Pony." Four previously unreleased cuts enrich the new version: "Soft Parachutes," "All Because of You," "Stranded in a Limousine" and "Spiral Highway." At No. 35, Simon's 1983 album "Hearts and Bones" notched the lowest album chart ranking of his solo career, but has endured as a fan favorite in the years since. Bonus cuts include acoustic demos of the John Lennon elegy "The Late Great Johnny Ace," "Rene and Georgette Magritte With Their Dog After the War" and "Train in the Distance," plus the previously unreleased work-in-progress track "Shelter of Your Arms." Simon roared back into the mainstream with 1986's South African-inspired "Graceland," which has been certified for U.S. shipments of 5 million copies by the Recording Industry Association of America. The set, which won Simon his second Grammy for album of the year, is bolstered by a demo of "Homeless," an unreleased version of "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes" and an early take on "All Around the World or the Myth of Fingerprints." Continuing Simon's world-music dabbling, 1990's "The Rhythm of the Saints" has been expanded to include the outtake "Thelma," an acoustic demo of "Born at the Right Time" and work-in-progress versions of "The Coast" and "Spirit Voices." Another extended break from the studio followed before the 1997 release of "Songs From the Capeman," Simon's short-lived Broadway musical. The album will now feature a demo of "Born in Puerto Rico" featuring Jose Feliciano, the demo for "Can I Forgive Him" and the unreleased "Shoplifting Clothes." The set is rounded out by Simon's latest solo release, 2000's "You're the One," which will include live renditions of "Old," opener "That's Where I Belong" and "Hurricane Eye."
  10. "into the music" by van morrison. that and "a love supreme" are probably the only 2 recordings that i have memorized every sound.
  11. a buddy of mine just received one as a gift, and he swears by it. he came over and borrowed about 80 cd's and i think it's not even half filled. he also bought a contraption that allows the ipod to play through a standard fm radio. you pick the signal on the ipod and then tune the radio to those numbers. presto. i drive a company car all day with no cd player - this may be just the ticket.
  12. i find it very ironic that christopher chose The Family (after seeing the family man ast the gas station), while tony s. chose family (carmella and tony b. over johnny sack).
  13. i have been listening to the collection "good boys while their sleeping" ever since i read about this box set in ice. they could be the most underrated band of all time. i have all of the individual cd's, but anyone who does not own this collection is doing themselves a great disservice.

    Elvin is dead

r.i.p. elvin. "a love supreme" was the first jazz cd i ever bought. i decided to "investigate" jazz in 1988. i walked down the isle and couldn't decide which one to buy. it was very imposing. i don't know how i decided on "a love supreme," but thank god i did. i've been listening to elvin as long as i've been listening to jazz. lately i've been spinning "youngblood" almost exclusively. today will be no different (and yet it will be very different).
  15. here in in cicny (the home of 5/3rd), but oddly enough i know the story on ruth's chris steakhouse. the steakhouse belonged to chris when he was married to ruth. they got divorced and she ended up with the restaurant, so in a final act of revenge (not sure which party instigated the divorce) - she renamed the place.
  16. i certainly hope this is just a rumor. just by chance i recently found a copy of "youngblood" released by enja records in 1992. this is an excellent recording with elvin anchoring javon jackson, joshua redman, nicholas payton, and george mraz. it appears to be out of print, so if anyone should stumble across it - i highly recommend they grab it.
  17. this may not be the appropriate thread for this, but . . . . i just picked up a copy of "youngblood" on enja. elvin is the leader. the sidemen include joshua redman, javon jackson, nicholas payton and george mraz. this is a wonderful cd. it appears to be out of print, so if anyone out there stumbles across it, i would highly recommend picking it up.
  18. the sopranos is about the most ironic show i have ever seen. i do not pick up on it alot the first time through. i only see alot of the irony on repeated viewings. that said, i find it highly ironic that tony s. told tony b. - it's hard doing business with strangers. he is now finding out how hard it is to do business with family.
  19. randy, i am very sorry for your loss. i can't imagine what it would be like to have a mother who's into jazz. good luck. bob
  20. i don't search out autographs, and probably would not even ask for one if i ever met anyone famous, but awhile back i found an copy of the john coltrane complete impulse studio recordings box set autographed by mccoy tyner and elvin jones. it was on ebay, but the price was below $100 so i couln't pass it up. the only other jazz autograph i have is gerry mulligan on a copy of "lonesome blvd." i found it used and when it took it to the counter to pay for it, i asked the clerk - is that an autograph? he looked surprised and confirmed that it was an autograph (i think he was ticked that he hadn't caught it before he priced it). i've seen other copies of this autographed since then, so i'm assuming that gerry mulligan must have signed a bunch of promos.
  21. great call on that one. i almost wore side 1 of that record out. i had to buy 2 copies, my original copy was a promo only white vinyl, and i wanted to keep it in good shape. one of the first cd's i ever bought.
  22. i use to listen to mid period cure (head on the door and kiss me ...), but i recently picked up a copy of the 4 cd b-sides box (it was sealed, cheap, and i had some trade credit). all of the reviews that i read talked about how great the 1st 2 discs are and how bad the 2nd 2 discs are, but i find that i like disc 4 the most. does anyone else have any thoughts on this set. it's not something i ever expected to pick up, but i have been listening to it quite a bit lately.
  23. there new search is definitely not as user friendly as the old. try searching all cd's first. then use the pull down to select jazz and hit enter. you should get all the blakey cd's in jazz.
  24. if we're talking, roll down the windows, step on the gas, great on the radio singles, here's 3: missionary man - eurythmics venus - bananarama just got lucky - the jo boxers
  25. dan - i agree - "we didn't start the fire" is probably as bad, but i never had to work a shift with someone who played it and enjoyed it. also, "we built this city" was the single of the album, meaning one of the better songs (if that's even possible).
