  1. tom, sorry to hear about your "bad luck" on this one. i never mention cd's to my wife in a store that has traditionally high prices. if there is a cd that she wants, it is usually something so common, i can find it use without too much effort. i made out at borders. i went in to buy 4 recent rvg's, but they had all of the recent ellington columbia titles on sale for $9.99. 3 of those plus tax came t0 $32.07.
  2. i have 3 that i return to time and again. "star time" by james brown. i am not sure if anyone considers it rock - but it's not jazz. "coat of cupboards" by xtc. not for the uninitiated as they only include a smattering of "proper" album cuts. "beg, scream, and sout - the big box of '60's soul" another classic from the folks at rhino.
  3. tower on line is have a 25% off sale on all blue note titles. plus, spend $20 and shipping is free. rvg's are only $9.74.
  4. i think a local store has a used copy of this. if so, it would run about $11 with shipping. i'll let you know the next time i'm going to that store (it's about an hour north).
  5. don't want to be redundant here, but from what i understand this is not all miller's fault. this was not a history of rock'n'roll promotion, but a tie in with rolling stone magazine and the 50th anniversary of rock-n-roll. they only used actual rolling stone magazine covers, and the band had to give their permission. i believe rolling stones list of the 50 most influential artisist included 22 black artists. if you look at the artists that are on the cans, i don't think anyone would claim that blondie, alice cooper, bon jovi, and willie nelson are 4 of the most important artists in the history of rock.
  6. how about junko onishi. here trio records ""live at the village vanguard volume 1" and "volume 2" are both very good. she also recorded in some other settings, but i am not as familiar with those.
  7. there's a copy of lucky thompson's "tricotism" that's currently over $150 with a day to go. i had one up there about a month ago and it only fetched about $12. that's crazy.
  8. stefan, thanks for the advice. the ska and the dub boxes are 4 of the 5 that are currently in my shopping cart.
  9. the recent trojan box sets (i believe most are 3 cd's) are on sale at best buy (online only). 2 for $25, but basically they are $12.50 a piece if you buy at least 2. also free shipping over $50 (i think). there are about 41 titles listed any recommendations would be appreciated.
  10. thanks for the links brownie. i did a search on fats before i started the thread. i think i had the improper perception that fats was just a comdian that played the piano a little. what a missconception that was.
  11. somehow in all my jazz purchasing over the years i managed to miss fats waller. i stumbled across "the early years part 1" on rca/bluebird at a used store. it was cheap, out of print, and i was looking for something to buy. oh my god. how did i pass over all of those great rca sets so many times over the years and not know what joy they contained. any help in locating some of these wonderful sets would be greatly appreciated.
  12. it appears that at least a couple of these titles have quietly gone out of print, including "McCoy Tyner Plays Duke Ellington" and "Fire Music" by Archie Shepp. does anyone have a complete list of these titles, or does anyone know for sure which titles have slipped out of print? thanks in advance for the help.
  13. what everyone has to remember is that martha did not sell her shares into a vaccum. she sold her shares to another person. she had access to information that the buyer of her shares did not, and then she lied about it cover herself. the hilarious part is what a small portion of her fortune she was trying to save. lunch money to me and you. i thought the interview with barbara walters last night was quite revealing. she is still being quite defiant. when asked direct questions about the case she responded with a typical, "i can't comment - that will come out in the appeal." my question is - if you are not guilty why are you holding all of your bullets for the appeal. should'nt you fight as hard as you can not to get convicted in the first place?
  14. leeway, i didn't say i prefer my bose wave radio - i said that i spend most of my time listening to the bose wave radio. my stereo system is down stairs in the living room. my office is upstairs and there is only room for the bose. i work out of the house and i spend more time in the office than i do downstairs. also, my comment about replacing cd's was 1/2 in jest. i rarely replace solely for sound quality (figuring if i wait a few years a better edition will come along), but i do replace for sound quality and additional material (london calling and all of the elvis costello rhino reissues). it is definitely a downward spiral.
  15. you can get the contact information for anyone that you have a transaction with on ebay. this will include their phone number and home address. they will get an email stating that you are getting their contact info. good luck.
  16. i would make sure you get your final selling fees back from ebay. you can also block him from bidding on any future auctions you might have.
  17. i've never had a "great" system, although i am well over 5k cd's at this point. lately, i find that i listen to most of my music on my bose wave radio in the computer room (and it's not even the acoustic wave). it sounds good enough to me. besides i have to buy "london calling" for the 3rd time, and "one flight up" for the 2nd time. who has money to upgrade their system when there are so many cd's to upgrade.
  18. for consistency (granted not necessarily the best measuring stick), i would have to take dexter gordon. no great, great highs, but also no lows what-so-ever.
  19. i probably get skewered for this, but i like a couple of wynton's longer works: "in this house, on this morning" and "citi movement.". wynton can be stiff and cold and his arrangements can be way to indebted to ellington, but some his sidemen are excellent such as wycliffe gordon, wessel anderson, and marcus roberts.
  20. according to the ice newsletter every copy ordered directly from derek's website will get autographed at no additional charge.
  21. i am not sure if this has been discussed elsewhere, but with the recent death of ray charles, i have been listening to alot of ray lately. i was reading the liner notes to rhino's "blues + jazz" comp and billy vera claims that he is working on a complete tangerine set for mosaic. this set is a few years old, so i am assuming that nothing ever came of this. does anyone know what happened?
  22. there's a biography available at the local half price books. if you are intersted, let me know.
  23. what cracks me up is there is another copy of the mfsl gold "blue train" listed for $18 without a single bid. the last copy to sell sold for $27. why would you waste your money listing something for $149 that won't get a single bid?
  24. i am not a fan of the nba, but i have watched the last 2 games. the pistons should be up 3 - 0. i had a feeling this might happen. no matter what the sport - always go with the d. jus remember the ravens/giants superbowl.
  25. 500 years from now, ray charles will still be remembered as one of america's greatest contributions to world culture. a true giant. i am devistated by this news. rest in peace brother ray.
