Hey Skid! Look what comes out tomorrow!
kulu se mama replied to Big Al's topic in Miscellaneous Music
btw - the styx behind the music is the best of the series. when they talk about performing in costume at the monsters of rock in texas, and get booed off the stage - that is classic. -

Hey Skid! Look what comes out tomorrow!

that's the show. the time frame of the show is 80/81. the show focuses on a freshman class and a senior class. i was a sophmore at the time, so it's right up my alley. it was cancelled before airing an entire season. the dvd has 18 episodes, but i think only 12 aired originally. the missing episodes were eventually aired on usa network. -

i never liked styx (although i did enjoy some equally bad hard rock back in the day), but a styx song was used to great effect in "freaks and geeks." they used more than one, but i think they might have used "come sail away" at just the right time, and it was one of the best uses of music in film i have ever seen. i told my wife, when you can make me get emotional over a styx song then you know you're doing something right. -
universal music has been selling the 18 cd complete bill evans on verve (sealed) for $99.99 + 2.49 shipping on ebay (buy it now). they've sold 11 of them so far. when they show up, they don't last long, so it's best to keep checking if it's something you want/need.

A stupid CD question about scuffs, scratches, etc.
kulu se mama replied to Peggy-Ann's topic in Audio Talk
the big question about "scratches" and scuffs is whether or not it casts a shadow on the disc. if you get a double image on the mark it is only on the thin plastic coating on the disc and can be repaired. if the scratch is in the foil itself, that is a more severe problem. also you might look at the label side of the disc. if you can see the mark on that side (which is actually closer to the playing surface), then you have a problem. some cd stores have machines that can buff out surface marks. i have a local guy who will do as many as i need for $2 per disc. when he's finished - they look brand new, but that only works if there is no foil damage. -
dave, there is a sealed copy of the complete blue note 2 cd set on amazon. bob

i thought that his first blue note release in 2000 simply titled "stefano di battista," and featuring elvin jones, jacky terrasson, and rosario bonnaccorso was the best straight ahead jazz release that year.

i ordered the dylan box, the seven steps box, and the brubeck "for all time" box right off the get go. i received the dylan box almost immediately, but i am still waiting for the other 2. i must say i am very satisfied. i went ahead and filled up my queue for the next 24 months, that way i don't have to worry about being charged for no cd.

i just purchased the art pepper "complete village vanguard sessions" 9 cd box on ebay. the listing listed everything in like new condition (box, booklet, and cd's). unfortunately the box is in bad shape. i emailed the seller, and he graciously offered to accept a return or i can have a 20% discount. the total with shipping will be around $65 after the discount. i know this is a good price, and obviously i will not have time to listen to all 9 cd's before i have to make a decision, so my question is - does anyone out there have this box, and if so, what is your opionion of it?

for anyone who is interested, here is a tidbit from the ice website concerning the forthcoming grachan moncur disc. Jazz lore is full of comeback stories from musical legends who toiled away in obscurity for years before finally seeing their dues paid. Like last year’s heralded re-emergence of renowned bassist Henry Grimes (who played with everyone from Sonny Rollins to Cecil Taylor, then disappeared for some 30 years), this coming January will bring trombonist Grachan Moncur III back to the scene. After the 2003 release of the Mosaic Select three-disc box set compiling his classic but hard-to-find mid-’60s Blue Note work, Moncur was spurred to play on his first album as a leader since 1983’s Soul Connection. The January 25th release of Exploration culls together new arrangements of the trombonist’s compositions, most of which were originally recorded on albums of his such as New Africa, Evolution and Some Other Stuff. Band members making an appearance on the new cuts include drummer Andrew Cyrille (who played on the original 1969 Africa), alto saxophonist Gary Bartz and tenor player Billy Harper, among others. The Capri Records collection features a mix of post-bop arrangements and modern free-form sensibilities, with Moncur’s signature burnished tone and creatively spacious phrasing. The track list: "Exploration" "Monk In Wonderland" "Love And Hate" "New Africa" "When?" "Frankenstein" "Excursion" "Sonny's Back!"

i am looking at my art pepper blue note cd's - complete aladdin volumes 1, 2, and 3. i count 5 sessions - not the 4 mentioned in the email from mosaic. here's the breakdown 10 songs from august 1956 5 songs from 1/3/57 5 songs from 12/28/56 5 songs from 1/14/5 15 songs from 4/1/57 is the email incorrect in the number of sessions - or will some of these songs not be on the mosaic?

the talking heads box is the worst i've ever seen. it's so bad - i almost did not buy it. not only is it oddly shaped, but there are some very bizarre drawings inside. the music is of course great.

Desperate Housewives
kulu se mama replied to Bright Moments's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
i agree with jazzmoose. some people need to get a life. one amusing aspect that seems to be lost in all of this is that t.o. is often criticized for not being a team player, and 1 of the points of this skit is t.o. ditching his team for nicollete sheridan. the whole skit was hilarious. as far as it being aired at 6 pm on the west coast - has anyone seen the commercials that run during most football games? -

my wife won't miss it, but i have to agree with lon. there is a level of cheeziness in the narrative style. i would prefer something a little darker a little more serious. although, i've loved felicity huffman (sp.) ever since "sportsnight." -
i have the 4 repertoire's (i think there are only 4, someone please correct me if i'm wrong), and they are well worth it if you can find them. "having a rave up" has 11 bonus cuts. "roger the engineer" has 10 bonus cuts. "for your love" has 13 bonus cuts and "five live yardbirds" has 8 bonus cuts. here's another vote for the rhino ultimate collection as a very good survey/starting point.

Mosaics on EBay going up again
kulu se mama replied to kulu se mama's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
there is a mosaic sampler on ebay right now that is up to $82. this looks like something fishy is going on. -
how was r.e.m.? we have tickets for the theatre show here in cincy. the place only seats about 2800. they have not played this venue since 1986. did they mix old and new pretty well. we last saw them on the mini up tour and they didn't go any further back than "losing my religion." i'd like to see "south central rain" or "driver 8."

Mosaics on EBay going up again
kulu se mama replied to kulu se mama's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
yeah, these were all cd sets. it surprised me because i did not think the ammons/lewis was ever on cd. i just noticed that a master jazz piano 4 cd set went for over $300. i never saw that one top $150. -
after a lull and flat prices it seems that things are on the upswing for mosaics on ebay. a t-bone walker just went for $333 (it's been averaging in the mid 100's). a maynard feguson just went for over $600. and to top it all off a ammons/lewis (all 2 cd's of it) went for $242. wow.

Complete Capitol Recordings Krupa/James
kulu se mama replied to wesbed's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
amozon's marketplace has a krupa/james mosaic for $42.49 + 2.49 shipping. the seller is newbury comics. i bought one last week, and it showed up today. it is still on the amzon site, so they must have more than 1. mine is complete and in excellent condition. this is a good deal even if it was not on the endangered list. -
i bought the peter tosh "honorary citizen" box set for $20 about 5 years ago. the booklet had been pulled from the staples in the center, but this was not mentioned in the listing. i contacted the seller, but he never contacted me back. today i would leave negative feedback.

guy, thanks for the information. it's only $7.99, so i will probably pick it up. i can always sell it later. do you know anything about the sound quality of the jazz door release?
-
I recently found a miles davis bootleg on the jazz door record label. if i rembember correctly it was recorded in 1969 and only had 2 cuts "gemini" and 1 other. both songs were extremely long 44+ minutes on 1 and 35+ minutes on the other. the band was wayne shorter, ron carter, herbie hancock and tony williams. it's fairly cheap, but i don't want to pick it up if the sound quality or performances are not any good. any help would be appreciated.
