Happy Birthday Mr. Jones!!!!
-
For those who are still interested; Just received my copy of the album... Possibly the most expensive cd I ever bought, but I think it's worth it. Only accompanied by Gary Dial, Millie Vernon, age 72 then, still sounds great. Her voice of course has matured, but in a beautiful way. She does a few songs again that she recorded on her debut lp (with Dave McKenna, Ruby Braff, Jo Jones & Jimmy Raney; an unlickely combination to put behind a singer) from 1956, and it's interesting to hear the way she handles this tunes almost 50 years later, and got the chance to explore more. The 15 songs were recorded in 2002, especially for the Japanese market, but I'm not sure if it was recorded in Japan. Millie Vernon passed away in february of this year. Here you can listen to some previewtracks of 'the Passion of Millie Vernon' http://www.jazzybird.com/liste/p_produit.c...e=1&alpha=0 Here you can listen to 'I don't know what kind of blues I'ver got' from her debut album 'Introducing Milli Vernon' j.

Yes I have. That is if you mean her "When Your Lover Has Gone" lp? Think Austin a is rather intriguing performer. A Throwback to earlier traditions, which her voice suits perfectly. Like the first part of the lp better (with Kessel, Manne, ...) The way she belts the blues with Kid Ory is impressive but not my cup of tea. j. -
there's a very very very expensive cd version of Embers Glow out there on ebay. For about 100$ it could be yours... Ouch. I'm still thinking a lot about miss Fielding, and I was wondering; how are the songs on the Caliope lp? Is that ever been issued on cd? Some of the other sessions have been issued on cd (Jams Clay, Carl Perkins,...) And how about the songs by Terry Morel? I really love Morels Bethlehem lp... And since the music is from a television show (Stars of Jazz, is that correct?), has someone ever SEEN Jane Fielding perform? That would be cool... To hear a reissue of the music would be cool, but to see her would be way cooler... yiha! j.

I'm doing research for my master thesis and I'm looking for (biographical) information about jazz singer Kitty White. The info that I have, is from the liner notes of the 4 lp's that Fresh Sound "recently" reissued, so it only covers her career from the beginning untill 1958. On the net I didn't found much, except that she recorded as late as 1965, (A session in Paris with Dexter Gordon) Any chance someone knows what happened after 1965? Any fans out here? Any opinions about her 'still to be reissued and I hope it's gonna be soon lp's' with Bud Shank, Laurindo Almeida, Corky Hale,...? j.

And recorded! on McRae selftitled debut lp and the first one on Decca (By Special Request), both reissued by Fresh Sound Records The Modern Art of Jazz and The Gentle Art of Love are magical... Also his backings on the Bob Stewart Let's Talk About Love lp, and the lone outing by the 4most, are great. Mathews seemed to be known for introducing new names into the studio (McrRae, Stewart, Herbie Mann, etc) but does someone know something about a recording with singer Donna Brooks? I Started a thread about it but since no one replied, I may find here an answer... In the liner notes of Brooks (reissued by Dawn) lp, Mathews is stated as her musical mentor, getting her into the jazzfield. But the writer also refers to the fact that she debuted, as a guest singer, on one of his lp's. Since Brooks is a remarkable singer (my opinion of course) I would love to hear that! Was Mathews still married to Paulette Girard? Was she also Dutch? And which songs did they wrote together Who can help me? Leuke blog Durium! j. Btw what else is available from Mathews? I have a record guide that says that Swingin' pretty and all that jazz is available on cd, is that true? Didn't find it yet...

Sounds logical. Thanks for the reply! Would sure be great if there more showes up! And maybe there's hope: Stern filmed O'Day getting on stage, and then cuts to Sweet Georgia brown, which she performed halfway the set. Tea for Two, I believe, was the last song she did. I must admit they are the highlights of the set, but that's something Stern couldn't know in advance... j.

I was wondering... Since I have Anita O'Day's complete set on cd, is there any chance that the whole set is filmed? Would love to see the first tune she did (Rock & Roll Boogie Blues). She seemed "a little bit" angry on her backing trio because they didn't start to play after she was announced, so she had to walk on to the mike without music. By the way, Chris Connor performed also that year at Newport, and you can spot her in the crowd watching O'Day. According to her site, Connor's set was also recorded (as was her set of the previous year). Any chance Stern filmed her singing? Would love to see Connor perform in her glory day's j.

Thought I revive my first topic about Millie Vernon, since no one replied on my questions about her Passion of Millie Vernon album. Is there anybody out here who knows this obscure singer, knows her music, is a fan, or is just as facinated about her as I am? I mean the 2007 Japanese reissue of her Storyville debut from 1956 (with Dave McKenna, Jimmy Raney, Ruby Braff and Jo Jones!!!) rated second in the vocal jazz sales chart of the Japanese Swing Journal, just after Norah Jones... J.

Indeed, Fresh sound cloned these two + QUADRAMA, with Cinderella, Duvivier and Wilson. + 3 numbers from an unfinished Prestige 12" LP with Farmer, McKusick, Seldon Powell, Teddy Charles, Duvivier and Wilson. Wonderful music! j.

I'm sorry, I didn't read the whole thread before I posted, should have done that I surely didn't want to offend any of you and I even feel sorry now that I got my information from a Spanish bootleg j.

QUOTE (chewy @ Dec 4 2008, 10:04 PM) is this really true? there IS no ted effantis? but its really T. Edwards?!? is this true? I'm not saying there isn't no Ted Efantis, Because according to Tom Lord's site (I only used the musician's index) there is a tenor player/ vocalist with this name. He only contributed on three sessions between 1957 and 1976. The Jane Fielding album was recorded on two separate sessions. The first one in December 1955 (with Paul Chambers), the second in March 1956 (with Leroy Vinnegar. So I think it should be clear now that Ted Efantis didn't play with Fielding, but that it's Teddy Edwards instead using the name Ted Elefantis (maybe Edwards knew Efantis and mixed his name a little bit?) for contractual reasons. (as I before quoted from Morton James' linernotes from the Joe Maini, small group recordings, issued a few months ago on Lonehill Jazz) j.

I like Mat Matthew's Dawn recordings to. Carmen McRae, Herbie Mann, Bob Stewart,... made their recording debut with his group. He used mostly Joe Puma on guitar. Someone ever heard his albums for Savoy? J.
-
Ted Elefantis = Teddy Edwards Not sure if it is all ready mentioned before but, as the linernotes of the Lonehill Jazz reissue 'Joe Maini, The Small Group Sessions' stated; "Embers' Glow [...] is a delightful recording featuring [...] Teddy Edwards on tenor (listed as "Ted Elefantis" on the original LP back cover for contractual reasons). The Fielding session is good with nice arrangements. There are a few up tempo numbers, and she sings more in the higher register of her voice than on her previous recording. j.

I just love Donna Brooks 'I'll Take Romance' Dawn recording from 1956, with marvelous backings by the Alex Smith trio. Seems she made her debut on record with the great Mat Matthews, but can't find any information about it. The only other session mentioned under her name at http://www.jazzdiscography.com/Leaders/BrooksDonna-ldr.php is a 7" Bethlehem record wit Chuck Wayne and a very young Bonny Scott. But the liner notes from the Dawn recording refer to a session where she's backed with Mat Matthews group... Did she ever recorded after 1956? Who knows something more about her? Many thanks! j.

Lorez Alexandria; Lorez Sings Prez "live" at the intimate Kit Kat Club... obvious intimate, just three people in the room cheering for her, and an announcer. Good music. j.

Has someone ever heard Millie Vernon's 'Passion of Millie Vernon'? I'm considering to buy the japanese reissue(?), but it's quite expensive (at least 45 Euro's/ 50$) When was it recorded? Has someone more information about her? The few things I know about her, I have from the linernotes from her Storyville debut and the 'Sings old and New Shoes' album. Many thank's! j.
