Picture of Al Haig (not Bill Evans) with female bassist
epistrophy007 replied to epistrophy007's topic in Artists
I don't know. . . could it be Vivien some years later? Eyes, nose, arms, fingers look possible. Yeah maybe it's Garry But to me Garry looks a little bit more, excusez le mot, voluptuous than the bassplayer on the Haig pic. One of the two dames behind Beryl Booker is Bonnie Wetzel. None of them look like the bassplayer on the Haig picture, to me. The Beryl Booker picture is from the mid fifties, the same period as the Haig picture. http://www.berylbooker.com/Templates/Beryl...oker%20Trio.jpg j. -

Thus there is no evidence of a photo of Evans with an as yet unidentified female bassist. Indeed, maybe I should replace Evans name with that of Haig in the title of this topic? -

Now I know that it's Al Haig (in the fifties) I'm even more curious about her identity! Is there maybe an Haig biography out that can give a solution? j. -

Found a part of the picture on the net... Maybe the picture was indeed mislabeled in my book... It's used as a cover for an album by AL HAIG, Piano Interpretations...Though he doesn't look like a young Haig to me either... The female basist isn't visableon the cover... http://www.dustygroove.com/item.php?id=n86nzm2jbz -
Don't know why but I think his 'La Salle St. After Hours' is one of the most sexiest numbers ever :blush2: j.

Spotted the album a few times on ebay (before I knew how good Long is) always as a very expensive Japanese reissue, maybe someday it will be available at a more reasonable price... j.

Got it, and I love every minute of it... At first I had a few reservations against some tunes. Like for instance 'Swan Lake'. But it works. Her voice recalls the smoky Donna Brooks, the bluesy Debby Moore and a young Pinky Winters. Now I sure wanna have her collaboration with Herb Geller. j.

A very tasty pianist, man what a sad news... RIP Mr. Katz j.

Shirley Horn's debut lp; Live at the Village Vanguard, Can-Am, 1961. I really hope this one's gonna be reissued very soon. j.

Sounds interesting. A few days ago I bought a cd 'Embreacable You', previous unreleased recordings. Stuff I didn't know before. Baker, who sings on most of the tunes, is only accompanied by guitar and a bass player. j. -
O man was I wrong on that one... What was I thinking!!! Thought for a while that it could be a vocal version of the 'Bohemia' tune by Les Jazzmodes, but after I heard that last tune I know that's also not true. The Parissong sounded familiar though the first time I heard it. j.

Well it's the same song, Bohemia After Dark, only on the broadcast Paris introduces the song as; [...] and now for the first time on the air [...] cafe Bohemia's own themesong Bohemia. What's Voice of America? A label, program,...? Never been in Washington before, but when I get there, I definitly gonna listen to that tape... Still I hope that those tracks will ever appear on cd...(with a whole lot of other Newport- and samelike live recordings) Thank you very much, very helpfull! j.

Hi there, two questions about Paris; On the MySpace page of Jackie Paris, http://www.myspace.com/jackieparis there's an audioclip from a broadcast, of a young Paris singing the Bohemia theme song. Any chance this is out on cd somewhere? As a fan of this tune, I was amazed to find out that there was a vocal version of it. Does someone know other vocal versions of this great tune? Paris appeared at the Newport festival in 57, any chance this was recorded and released on lp/cd? j.

Oops... Sorry Mr. Bruno, I really had no idea. Yeh, Kay is surely an option!!! The longer I look at the picture the more I doubt. If it isn't Evans the pianist on the photo really looks like him. Maybe an other suggestion; Lee Morgan? The wife of accordeonist Leon Sash? j. -
Not yet mentioned; Originally on Luxor LP-1 and later on reissued by FreshSound A long title (or a lot of subtitles) A Tribute to Dinah Washington, The Wynton Kelly Trio Introduces Donna Drake, Donna Sings Dinah (songs made famous by Dinah Washington). Recorded in 1968 with Keeter Betts (bass) and Jimmy Cobb (drums). Enjoyable backings by the trio, short solos from Kelly. Don't know what became of the singer, she isn't that special but the linernotes state that she sang with the likes of Donald Byrd, Paul Chambers, Barry Harris, Kenny Burrell and even Charlie Parker. j.

One of the few vocal outings of the label; Jerri Winters, 'Winters Again' PLP808, with the Mundell Lowe Orchestra. There's a possibility that there was a brief Japanese reissue in the early '90s. Although Billboard (8/11/1962) said that she's a "classy singer" , "neatly backed by Lowe and his ork." and that "this album could get her renewed attention", it was the last album she recorded. j.

In MusicHound; Jazz, The Essential Album Guide, (ed. Steven Holtjes & Nancy Ann Lee) 1998, there is on page 386 ( for all of those who own the book) a photograph of a young Bill Evans with a female bassist. Sheetmusic and microphones clearly visable I assume that this picture was taken on recording session. Evans recorded with Dick Garcia (Message from Garcia, Dawn, 1956) with a (for me unknown) bassist with the name; Jerry Bruno. Don't know if this Jerry was male/female. So could it be this lady on the picture? Any suggestions who she can be? I'm really curious about this one. j.

There is also an intersting Jazz Casual session out on cd under the leadership of Jimmy Witherspoon Jimmy Witherspoon with Ben Webster and Vince Guaraldi. How cool's that, Guaraldi as a bluespianist... j.

Do you mean Bobby Short, the cabaret/jazzsinger-pianist? Wasn't he gay? j.

Liston wrote also the arrangements for an album by Gloria Lynne in 1959; Lonely and Sentimental (also issued under the title Afterhours) There is also a beautifull song titeld 'We Never Kissed' written (text and music) by Liston. The settings varied from just rhythm section, small big band to "fullsize" orchestra. It's one of Lynne's better recordings. j.
