  1. Alice Coltrane was once married to bebopsinger Kenny Hagood (think oop-pop-a-da with Gillespie, Darn that Dream with Davis et al.) Does someone know if they have played together or perhaps even made record or so?!? Somehow I can't imagine them together...(musically speaking) Their daughter is Mikki Coltrane. Does somehow have more information about Hagood? Can imagine that most people think of his singin' as an acquired taste but I like his big throaty voice and sometimes quite dramatic way of balladeering... Thank you! j.
  2. Spotted this one on some blog and thought I just had to share it with all of you who like this kind of vocalalbums, or for the ones who like Carl Perkins... You can also read what Billboard had to say about this album. http://the-crime-in-your-coffee.blogspot.com/2010/02/inez-jones-have-you-met-inez-jones.html Inez Jones, now completely forgotten, made just one record for Riverside in '57. I believe she appeared in the same period on an episode of 'Stars of Jazz' or some kind of program. On guitar Oscar Moore and at the piano...Carl Perkins!!! Enjoy. j.
  3. Hi has someone the chord patterns of this tune by John Wright? j.
  4. Thank's for the replies!!! Unfortunately my cd doesn't include the original linernotes... j
  5. Just curious about how this singer came in to view for this jamsession... Not that I don't like his singing, but in the company of Farlow, Costa & Burke, the appearance of Williams seems a bit out of context. Gene Williams was mostly active in the 40s with Claude Thornhill, led a recording date in 51 with his own orchestra including musicians like Kai Winding, Barry Galbraith, Billy Taylor, Danny Bank, Eddie Safranski,...but for the rest his contributions seem scarce. Some ideas' about who this guy was or is? j.
  6. Found the musicians on the debut lp; Joe Newman, Frank Wess, Lou Stein, Tony Mottola, Milt Hinton, Ellis Tolin. According her birthdate (1938) she was only 17 when she recorded this one, so on the youtube clip she's just 18! Hmmm... Two tracks from her second live album from the 60s 'Live and Beautifull' (with the Victor Feldman Trio) can be heard via the following link; http://images.google.be/imgres?imgurl=http://www.hi-fi.gr.jp/jacket/thumb/58000/58076.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.hi-fi.gr.jp/search.html%3Frec_artist_kana%3D%25E3%2583%25AB%25E3%2583%25BC%25E3%2582%25B9%25E3%2583%25BB%25E3%2583%2597%25E3%2583%25A9%25E3%2582%25A4%25E3%2582%25B9&usg=__kz8F3uO-6ION0rtA2A3M2PJJ_Yw=&h=120&w=120&sz=7&hl=nl&start=5&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=0tZNFw1GlJMHFM:&tbnh=88&tbnw=88&prev=/images%3Fq%3D%2522ruth%2Bprice%2522%2B%2522live%2Band%2Bbeautiful%2522%26um%3D1%26hl%3Dnl%26tbs%3Disch:1 enjoy. j.
  7. Ooh that one is new to me!the titles alone seem fun! There are some items on ebay now... A comprehensive reissue is more than welcome, but I don't think that we gonna see that soon!!! Thank's! j.
  8. Haha, from that point of view, I'm in...MM Btw found the rest of the album where you can listen (and download it I think) Shall I post the link? j.
  9. I heard this track on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vFlISw8H30 Anyone familiar with this album? Made me curious about the rest of the album! I wonder if the vocalist ever had the chance to perform (these songs) not anonymously... j.
  10. Reading the Topic about John Young made me think of an other pianist (Maybe he was more a singer than a pianist?) The one and only Cecil Young. Seems he didn't recorded much and that his career never really took off... Enjoy his wayout manner of scatting his version of Oop-Pop-A-Da aka Who Parked the Car! At some moments it sounds like Al Jarreau or Bobby McFerrin but in the '50s. HearHear; http://learning2share.blogspot.com/search?q=cecil+young More information/comments about this man is/are more than welcome! j.
  11. One final remark; "You are My Lucky Star" isn't from her album with Johnny Smith...A little bit strange since she's there for promoting the album... Did she recorded it before/anyway? And can someone please give me some information on her debut album? Like who the musician's are,... Thank You! j.
  12. That's the verse of the song... I have a more recent reissue of the Mister Kelly's set paird with Sings the Winners (because it was the only way to get this music). One song, Tea for Two, I had allready on a Vervesampler. On that sampler it had a small spoken outro by O'Day over the music. Something like; "thank you don't go away", but it's not on my complete album. Some of the other songs do have a similar spoken intro or outro... So was this set originally released as a coplete set with introducion's etc? Btw I Love those livesets recorded at Mister Kelly's (Vaughan, Fitzgerald, Della Reese) j.
  13. Never heard of those...seems rare. The link to Eason's Allmusicentry; http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:jbfexqt0ldje~T1 j.
  14. Thank's for the downloadable version!!! j.
  15. hi, the famous drchilledair (the same man who posted the Ruth Price clip), posted on his blog and on youtube this clip from the Pennebaker documentary about Dave Lambert. Does someone knwo what's the title of this catchy song? j.
  16. Ooh wasn't aware of the other musicians. Thank's! I really hope that some day all the episodes are out on dvd/cd ( as well as those from similar programs like Frankly Jazz. What I like about this program is that they pair (is that correct English?) (lesser((known)) vocalists with unlickely instrumentalists e.g; Dave Brubeck with Betty Roché, The Jazz Messangers with Kitty White, Hampton Hawes with julie London,... Some of these sets were released on cd, but what I can't understand is that they omit the tracks with the vocalists ( like the Carl Perkins set on Fresh Sound, they just leave the two tracks with Anita O'Day!!!) Anyway, here you find the complete episodeguide -> http://www.tv.com/stars-of-jazz/show/21008/episode.html?flag=1&tag=list_header;paginator;All&season=All j.
  17. Does someone know why this Spanish label is only available through Japanese import? I mean, I live in Europe but can only order releases of the label on Japanese sites or on ebay... j.
  18. I believe he also arranged Wes Montgomery's first date with strings on Riverside (reissued years ago as part of a two-fer called Pretty Blue. Unless it's a totally different Jimmy Jones. No that's him! Not that familiar with Jones as an arranger, but I have an album from the same period he did with Gloria Lynne. j.
  19. Et voilà ze link; Finally some moving images of the singer in 1958. Someone familiar with her debutalbum (My Name is Ruth Price[/i], I Sing, Kapp)? Fans? j.
  20. Thank's! Completely forgot that Summer Rain is from Wallington...
  21. I'm intruiged with this singer some may know from the (cult)album she made with Tom Talbert (Wednesday's Child, Atlantic, 1956). As pleasing as the album is (my opinion), I'm most of all curious about her songwriting skills. On the album with Talbert she sings two of her own songs; "Love isn't everything" (Jeanne Lee sang it again on her debutlp) and "I Like Snow". A couple of weeks ago I was looking at some items on ebay. One of them, George Wallington Trio + Eddie Costa Trio Workshop (Verve), took my attention especially 'cause one of the numbers was credited to Patty McGovern... I can't recall the title of the number, but I'm sure it wasn't one of the two I mentioned above. Can someone help me with the title? Anyone familiar with other songs of her? And most important what became of her? Thank you. j.
  22. O my thank's for the reactions! I have the classics cd, and I must say the first time that I heard "Strollin' Easy" it sounded extremely familiar (like I could hum along from the start). Does someone know if there are versions by other musicians? Somehow I believe that I heard it on a live album/broadcast as the themesong of a set or so. Btw is his soloalbum still available on cd? Spotted it once on ebay at a very spicy price... Didn't know the Ellington Jazz Party album yet, gonna check that one out...thank's for the tip. One of the few moments that Jones get's a chance shine a bit more than usual is his "long" introduction on "I can't believe that you're in love with me" with Quinichette (Moods, Emarcy, 1955). j.
  23. I'm a great fan of pianist Jimmy Jones, bought a lot of sessions just because he's the pianist on them. Other people who share my appreciation for this underrated pianist? Recommondations? Thank you. j.
  24. The Jackie Paris Sound is one of my favorites! Here's the tarcklisting (from Jackie Paris his homepage) We Three, It’s Only A Paper Moon, This Is My Night To Dream, Someone’s Rocking My Dreamboat. (JACKIE PARIS, vocal; JOE BENJAMIN, bass; BARRY GALBRAITH, guitar; ED SHAUGHNESSY, drums. Recorded in New York, November 13th, 1957 I’ll Get By, ON A Slow Boat To China, You’re Getting To Be a Habit With Me, Until The Real Thing Comes Along (JACKIE PARIS, vocal; WENDELL MARSHALL, bass; BARRY GALBRAITH, guitar; BILLCLARK, drums. Recorded February 13th, 1958.) This Year’s Kisses, I’ve Got A Pocket Full Of Dreams, It’s A Pity To Say Goodnight, It Could Happen To You. (JACKIE PARIS, vocal; HANK JONES piano; JOE BENJAMIN, bass; BARRY GALBRAITH, guitar; ED SHAUGNESSY, drums; EDDIE WASSERMAN, tenor. Recorded February 25th, 1958 "Jackie believes Roy Haynes was the drummer on these dates, even though Ed Shaughnessy is listed." Btw I'm also sure that it isn't Hank Jones who gets credits, but have to check that first. Has anyone an idea about his lp with Anne Marie Moss (Live at the Maisonette? j.
  25. yous talkin' of her, sir? This was the first cd of Babs I bought, before I knew she was a he... Voilà, Crazy j.
