"Fanfare for the Warriors" AEC

I'm listening to the Shepp and Mobley version of "Sonny's Back" on "Yasmina, A Black Woman" and I'm trying to place this tune. I know it was recorded by the Jazztet and by Moncur on 2004's "Exploration". Was it recorded by anyone else? Maybe McLean in the 60s? It sounds so familiar. Thanks, Kevin

I believe that in 1990 Blue Note opted out of a third Andrew Hill release after Eternal Spirit and But Not Farewell combined to sell less than 2,000 copies. At least that is what one jazz label owner who is a huge Hill fan told me. Kevin

I bought a copy from Henry last night after his performance at the Jazz Gallery. Here is what it says on the back cover. "Pop Start the Tape, Stop" was composed for a sound installation and also a live performance format. I recorded the hubkaphone live in the space (Engine 27). The live tape was used with the ensemble. The hubkaphone was recorded and played through sixteen different speakers throughout the space. So, the sound is traveling at a designed speed from speaker to speaker. At certain times the hubkaphone is being heard at the octave above or below." I don't have a record player at the moment, so it will be a few weeks before I can listen to this and transfer it to cdr. Vinyl may sound better in many respects but I do most of my listening in the car or at a desk. Kevin By the way, Threadgill's Zooid were superb last night.

Yes, I've had it for a week. I think it's excellent. Think of "Song for My Sister" without the title cut.

I know, but from the praise lavished upon this guy from some people, you'd think he had something really special to offer. I saw Amos Lee open for Dylan in April. I thought he was pretty good, far better than Mayer in nearly every respect. However, I couldn't help but see Amos Lee as Blue Note's attempt to produce a male Norah Jones. I saw Norah Jones play in Makur before her Blue Note release was out. I thought she was attractive and talented but again nothing to separate her from the plethora of talented singer songwriters gigging around NYC. In fact, her songwriting chops are not the strongest. It didn't hurt that Ravi Shankar was her father. In the music business, mediocrity often rises to the top. Kevin

Take a look at a scan of the cd, are they all like this? Kevin

I just picked up "Tribute to Lester" by the Art Ensemble of Chicago. I opened the cd and noticed that it has the name "Eric Clapton" spelled in silver letters across the front of the cd. It is an ECM silver pressed cd and the contents are the AEC trio recording in honor of the passing of Lester Bowie. What's up with Eric Clapton's name? Kevin

Last night I saw Reggie Workman, Pheroan akLaff, Sam Rivers, and Roscoe Mtchell perform together as WARM at the tenth Vision Festival. It was a truly extraordinary performance. Roscoe's energy is amazing and even in his eighties, Sam Rivers held his own. I know they recorded it, I hope it sees the light of day. A highlight from earlier in the evening was Marshall Allen's frenetic alto playing in the Henry Grimes quartet. Allen and Rivers are both in their eighties but play with the passion and energy of men half their age. Unfortunately I will not be attending the rest of the festival. I would have loved to see Joseph Jarman and Fred Anderson. Kevin

I have a copy of Larry Carlton's "Deep Into It" in very good shape. It has a gold promo stamp on the front insert, otherwise the cd and inserts are near mint. PM me a mailing address and it's yours. Kevin -
My initial thoughts. Right off the bat I knew track ten was from Kirk's "Domino" the grunt gives it away and I've been recently listening to it. Track 14 sounds like Jackie Mac but I can't place it. I really like track three, that lone trumpet in an orchestral setting, I'll be buying that one once I find out who it is. Track two is Evans' "Waltz for Debby", I really like the Evans trio with Scott LaFaro, beautiful and sophisticated. And track 9 sound likes Miles but again, I can't place it.

I just received "Americans Swinging in Paris" from Caiman and although the cd appeared to be sealed, the inlay was missing. There is a slot where the inlay booklet should be but it's not there. I just want to know the session info for this cd. Is this just a twofer containing "Les Stances a Sophie" and 'People in Sorrow"? I have "Les Stances a Sophie" and it has 8 tracks: 1. Theme De Yoyo 2. Theme De Celine 3. Variations Sur Un Theme De Monteverdi (i) 4. Variations Sur Un Theme De Monteverdi (ii) 5. Proverbes (i) 6. Theme Amour Universal 7. Theme Libre 8. Proverbes (ii) "Americans Swinging in Paris" has the following tracklisting: 1. Theme de Yo-Yo 2. Thème de Céline 3. Variations Sur un Thème de Monteverdi (I, II, III) 4. Thème de l'Amour Universel 5. Proverbes (I, II, III) 6. Thème "Libre" 7. People in Sorrow, Pt. 1 8. People in Sorrow, Pt. 2 Can someone clarify this? Is "Sophie" just arranged differently? Kevin

PM'ed you regarding this one! Kevin -
Thanks Allen, for your comments on Hemphill. After reading your reply I phoned Cadence and ordered "New Tango '92" so I can hear the two of you together. Kevin

Maybe someone more knowledgeable than I could comment on whether Julius Hemphill and Henry Threadgill are inside/outside players. I'm still trying to grasp the concept. From Air to the Zooid, there's really no one's work I enjoy more consistently than Henry Threadgill, avant-garde and compositionally strong. What about Roscoe Mitchell, though a lot of his work is clearly outside. After listening to several fairly experimental recordings by Mitchell, I was surprised at how accessible and beautiful his "Song for my Sister" is. Kevin

FS : complete blue note lee morgan 50's sessions
Kreilly replied to etherbored's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I bought the Jackie McLean Mosaic several months ago. It is great but I find myself listening to the original cds I already had instead, primarily because of sequencing. I can easily burn "It's Time" but for some reason I know I'll end up buying a copy. Maybe it's the iconic status the original packaging holds (that's from growing up on vinyl). I do have one gripe with the way some bonus tracks are included. I don't think they should interrupt the original album sequence. McLean's domestic Blue Note release of "One Step Byond" inserts an alternate take of "Saturday and Sunday" in the number two slot right after the original. Alternate takes are better served by going at the end of the original sequencing. I will still grab certain Mosaic sets because they serve as mini reference libraries that you can burn from and they often contain impossible to find oop releases and unreleased sessions. As far as listening, I still enjoy marathon 5 or 6 hour listening sessions. Just a few weeks ago, I listened to Henry Threadgill for an entire morning/afternoon, through my favorite cds of his catalog, repeating several of them. Kevin -
John Coltrane "Stellar Regions" I'm listening to track 7 "Jimmy's Mode" and starting around 4:15 into the track I hear a melody that sounds very similar to the Beatles' song "Fool on the Hill". But "Fool on the Hill" wasn't yet released to my knowledge and Stellar Regions wasn't released until 1995. What melody is Garrison playing there? Are the Beatles and Garrison's melody both based on an older common source? Or is it a coincidence? Kevin

The ugly, growin greed of being a jazz/music lover
Kreilly replied to cool_blue's topic in Offering and Looking For...
greed = people charging or spending more than i'm willing or able to pay. sorry, but i can't agree with you on this one. i've been buying jazz recordings for over 30 years. i don't pay excessive prices simply because i choose not to. at the same time, i don't begrudge people who have the resources that allow them to get what they want at higher prices that they can afford. I'm very sympathetic with the original post. Half.com, ebay stores, and Amazon marketplace charge excessive amounts for htf and oop titles. Say I have a disc that I don't want anymore and I can sell it for five times what I paid for it, should I? I simply would not, barring financial distress, sell a cd for $50 that I paid 7 or 8 dollars for. $15 seems more reasonable to me and I'd prefer to sell it to a real fan. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. If, as a community, jazz buyers refused to pay excessive amounts then prices would be more reasonable and accessible to those of us struggling to make ends meet. That's my two cents. Kevin
