Album Of The Week: October 5 - 11: "Witchi-Tai-To"
Big Al replied to SEK's topic in Album Of The Week
I don't have this album, but as this seems to be a discussion about Stenson's work in general, who does he compare to? Or, put another way, who is he influenced by, and does he show those influences in his work? I hope to hear Serenity this week, and would like to think that at SOME point in the near future I'll actually hear the album for this week as well. -
Just wanted to send out a hearty THANKS to everyone who participated during the "official" week for this album. Hopefully it comes up again in the future (will ANYONE be able to break the record set by Black Market?), and the next few weeks promise to be very challenging and adventurous! Cheers to you all, and thanks for keepin' it oh-so-greeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeazy!!!! B)

Ahhhhhhhh. That'll teach me to be so.... listless!
-
Either I had a really crappy pressing, or maybe the original CDs of this were even worse than the RVG I heard; the copy of the Village Vanguard RVG I had sounded awfully muddy and muffled to these ears.

And they "swing" thru here (term used very loosely) tonight. Wynton's smug smarmy mug has been plastered in every newspaper since the event was announced. I hope, for Soul Stream's sake, that they played a less expensive venue in SA than they'll play here in the 'plex: Bass Hall, where if I'm not mistaken, the cheapest seat is around $45!!! Now THAT'S bringing jazz to the people for ya.

Just curious: how come Chris's posts are always indented? Nothing wrong with it, just curious is all. As usual, I don't have anything relevant to contribute to the thread, although I think Chris should get some special award for voluntary self-infliction. Why didn't ya call him up and harass him on the air? The worst that could happen is you might've been referred to as a "minor man," thereby putting you in that upper echelon of other greats who've seen thru the smoke and mirrors that is Crouch.

Daaaaaaamn straight!!! How 'bout that D? Two possessions, two safeties!!! And I was there to see it! Ooooooh yeah!!!!
-
Holy cow, YES!!!! Keep That Groove Goin' is all sorts of outstanding!!! That's why I'm so excited about this new Holloway disc. I heard "Go Red Go" on the radio on the way to work one morning, and had it ordered by the end of the day. I am so glad they still make records like this these days!

John Paul Jones did a solo album, a soundtrack to a movie called Scream for Help, which I got when I was going thru a Zeppelin-obsession in high school. It had Jon Anderson on vocals on a few cuts, and Jimmy Page on a couple others. It was okay, basic mid-80’s synth-rock, nothing more. Your memory is amazing, Rooster. Half of these albums I'd forgotten about (or tried to, anyway)!

Who? What? Where?

Wow, me & Moose have the same fashion sense!!! And I'll have you know that, tho you can't see it in the avatar there, I am wearing socks & sandals in that picture!

As the proud owner of both discs, I can heartily recommend that this is a HELLUVA bargain!!! Prime bayou greeeeaze!!! I like the idea of the weekly slab o' greaze, too. Although, I hafta admit that this week's AOW is, IMOSHO, verrrry juicy!

Is that one even available any more? I hope so!

The first time I ever heard this album was a cassette copy that a friend made for me years ago. Upon first listen, I thought the drummer was Elvin Jones, the way he was tearing up the skins! I actually enjoy the conga playing of Landrum, especially on “The Yodel.” It just adds more fuel to an already roaring fire! Sure he’s no Chihuahua, but then who is? B) To each his own, though; I can dig it that some folks may not get into it or enjoy it as much. That’s cool.

That’s another thing I forgot to mention: the guitar playing of Grant Green. I know I’m in the minority when I say this, but if there’s one thing I really can’t stand about Green’s playing, it’s those times when he plays the same note for about, oh, 900 measures!!! Okay, I know that’s exaggerating it a bit (I think the number is actually closer to 700), but that just drives me nuts, ESEPCIALLY on ballads! (I’m thinking of moments from Ike Quebec’s Blue and Sentimental). Anyway, that’s a personal preference, and I know there’s a lot of people who dig that sound. But on GAGTG, that’s nowhere to be found. Just good solid lines, brimming with ideas. His comping is some of the best he’s ever done, keeping Big John on his toes (who reciprocates, natch)! Glad you guys are digging this one. Two pages long, and it’s only Tuesday!!! Thanks for sharing my enthusiasm!
-
Personally, I can't WAIT to see what these guys have up their sleeves!
-
Makes perfect sense! Glad this all got straightened out.
-
Kewl! B)
-
Glad yer back, and I apologize for any confusion I caused. I hope I didn't step on any toes; I just wanted to keep the process going, and I may have jumped the gun in doing so.

If it is, he needs a shave. Come to think of it, after looking at MY avatar, so do I!!!

And the Cows are above .500 for the first time since..... hell, I can't even remember. From a different perspective, Tuna's record can be divided up this way: against teams he's coached before, he's 2-0; against everyone else, he's 0-1. Ah well, enjoy it while it lasts, I s'pose!

This, folks, is the equivalent of an organ-trio cutting contest. Green and Patton come flyin' outta the gate, bobbin' & weavin', cuttin' & duckin', oozin' & greazin' for a good solid 37 minutes until the champ is declared: Hugh Walker. WHO?!?! No, not "who." "HUGH!" (any What's Up Doc fans out there?) Anyone who's followed the "greazy" thread knows that I consider Ben Dixon as the greatest drummer for Patton & Green; but on THIS disc, Walker lights a fire under these guys like NOTHING on any record Dixon appeared on. And this is not to slight Dixon's work, either: his was just a different flavor of greaze. Whereas Dixon was like a good oregano that you use to help sautee the onions & peppers, Walker is like substituting crushed red pepper for the oregano: a different flavor, but a damn HOTTER flavor at that! Having said all that, as I said before, Green and Patton start out on fire and never lose any steam. That's another nice thing about this album: NO BALLADS!!! Now, I like ballads & all, but a ballad on this record would've just killed the mood, stopped it cold. There appears to be only two tempos on this album: fast and FASTER!!! Well, that's enough for now. I can't wait to see what Soul Stream has to say about this!
-
That tune, and the album from which it oozes--Blue Mode--is one baaaaaaaad juicy MF!!! The kinda tune that makes one wish one owned a '76 Buick Convertible with the top down, cruisin thru the neighborhood with this greeeazin' up the area!!!

Heap big thanks to SEK for allowing me to be a last-minute pinch-hitter while he takes the next week to pick HIS AOW! So let this be the official announcement as well: SEK for AOW, 10/5 - 10/11. Big John Patton - Got A Good Thing Goin' (click here to buy) I'll post a more proper beginning to this thread after dinner. My wife's homemade chicken pot pie is callin' my name!!!
