  1. I thought I bought the Hamilton MAN FROM TWO WORLDS. Or did you have two copies? In any event, SOMEONE should grab those Heath OJCs. I would, but I already have 'em. Small group playing at its finest and at prices that can't be beat!
  2. Sometime between the beginning of this thread and now I managed to score the TOCJ-4100 (or whatever number) of this album. That remastering y'all are calling for would be well-served (if ever) by using this source. Talk about an album coming to life! Digging this one out for spinning today! :excited:
  3. PM sent on the following (assuming still available, I picked from every list!): 5 Earl Hines Once Upon a Time (Impulse) 4 John Coltrane The Bethlehem Years (Bethlehem) 2 CDs, minor scuff on CD1 7 Chico Hamilton Man from Two Worlds Impulse 5 Hank Mobley Reach Out (BN) 4 Ron Carter New York Slick (OJC-Milestone) light scratches not affecting play 5 Roy Haynes Just Us (OJC-Prestige) 6 Roy Haynes We Three (RVG Remaster) 4 Duke Ellington New Orleans Suite (Atlantic)
  4. I was thinking the exact same thing!!! I am so psyched about this! (And FWIW, I thought Death Magnetic was their best album since "Justice." Didn't think they had it in them anymore)
  5. Point Of View (which is great) was on CD in Japan. Don't know if it's still available. It's actually called POINT OF DEPARTURE, and I'm in full agreement that having these two sessions on one disc would be terrific! And FWIW, I'm pretty psyched about these: Art Blakey - Jazz Messengers!!!!! / A Jazz Message Milt Jackson - Statements / Jazz 'n' Samba Elvin Jones - Illumination! / Dear John C. Gabor Szabo - The Sorcerer / More Sorcery McCoy Tyner Trio - Inception / Reaching Fourth
  6. Does anyone know what that sound is towards the end of "Syn-anthesia" on Cannonball Adderley's SEXTET IN NEW YORK on Riverside? Sounds like Lateef is trying to uncork his oboe or something....
  7. Must respectfully disagree!!! The edition of the Messengers with Fuller is my all-time favorite line-up! YMMV, of course.
  8. Please send the folks at CTImasterworks an email with your requests: info@ctimasterworks.com I'd especially regarding the Hubbard / Turrentine releases which would make a great 2 CD set. I have already requested it, but it would be great if others do the same. They've been very responsive to me. Heck, I like to think that most of these re-issues are the result of an e-mail I sent to them shortly after the first batch, containing a list of what I was hoping to see. So far, damn near everything that's been issued was on that list!!!
  9. Well, I'm offended by the content of this thread, so therefore I DEMAND that it be moved to the Politics Forum.
  10. What's the name of the place? Were you in Denton for the Flute Fest? Man, I wish I'd gone!
  11. Welcome to the forum, Ready Rudy! Thanks for sharing that story, what a wonderful legacy your uncle left, both personally and musically. Looking forward to (hopefully) more insights; I guarantee they will be appreciated around here!
  12. Another YES!!! Absolutely go back and get it!
  13. Hope you had fun at the Record Convention. Decided not to go this time as the last ones have been pretty unimpressive for me. Bought a few dvds, and some bootleg cdrs, that's about it. It was okay; you didn't miss much, that's for sure. I mean, it was fun to walk around & stuff, but the only thing of interest to anyone around here was Kenny Burrell's ASPHALT CANYON SUITE, which I got for $3. Not sure if I'll come back down for another one. I mean, I got more goodies at Antone's after I left the convention, and it didn't cost me $5 to walk in there!
  14. Get 'em both. Well worth your time and money.
  15. *bounces around room in insane joy* Do y'all know how close I came to picking up the Turrentine on vinyl at the Austin Record Show this weekend? Just something in the back of my mind said, "Wait, you just never know, and they ain't done reissuing yet." Straight Life? In the Beginning? Body Talk? Am I in Heaven already??? It's like the folks at Sony Masterworks are going down that list I e-mailed 'em earlier this year! Love love LOVIN' it!!! I cannot possibly say enough good things about IN THE BEGINNING. It is a desert island disc for me. So much so that I'll probably still keep the old CD version of it, which I never do. I cannot WAIT to crank up STRAIGHT LIFE and BODY TALK, especially the Hubbard. They've done such a fantastic job with the remasters so far, I can't wait to hear how they take care of this bad boy!!! *more jolly bouncing around the room*
  16. Damn, I thought after last season they'd finally disposed of that plaque. Guess I was wrong....
  17. This is the song that got me hooked foreverandeveramen on the Monkees! I remember when I first heard this being astounded that it wasn't readily available anywhere (back in the 80's before every scrap of music by the Monkees had been re-re-re-reissued on CD). As much as I like the recorded version of this song, this TV version has always held a special place simply because Dolenz sounds COMPLETELY uninhibited, just gettin' DOWN!!! Bubblegum never chewed so damn good!!! Additionally, I played this for a trumpet-playing friend when I was a teen in the 80's. His comment was "Does that guy have a vise-grip on his nuts or something?"
  18. Good deal! I'll keep an eye out for ya!
  19. Me either. Additionally, I've always thought that Nesmith inadvertently exposed Zappa for the snob that he was. There's a part where Nesmith gets a good zinger in on Zappa, and Zappa looks off-camera as if to say, "Did you hear what this jerk just said? Does he not know who I am and how important I am?" The essence of Zappa, caught in a few scant frames of TV. This is why Mike is my favorite Monkee.
  20. Why not an album cover sub-forum?
  21. Now that I think about it, there were a lot of the early CD issues of the CTI's that had extended fades on some songs. I can't remember if it was FIRST LIGHT or SKY DIVE that had one song that was longer on the CD-reissue than on the LP. I asked Doug Payne about this, and he said it was because of the tapes used for the reissues or something like that (trying to remember an e-mail conversation from five years ago that I've long since deleted), and since the playing time of the CD allowed for more space for music, songs were allowed to play out until they were actually over, instead of the original fade-outs. But the Legacy digipak is interesting because I thought Legacy wasn't using the same tapes that were used for the original CD issues (and really, at this point, how does anyone know who has which original tape of a CTI session anymore?). One more thing: listening to the new SUNFLOWER just now, and I don't miss those extra three minutes at all. IIRC, that was actually one of the reasons I sold/traded my Legacy SUNFLOWER: that song seemed to go on FOR-FRICKIN-EVER!!! I much prefer this shortened/original version.
  22. PM sent with question about Hugh Masekela's HOME IS WHERE THE MUSIC IS
  23. FWIW, "Brazil" from STONE FLOWER is the same way, but you'd have to have the old OLD CD version to notice this. Always wondered what the length on the original LP was. Par for the course for CTI reissues, I'd say. It's a fine album, but I wouldn't call it his masterpiece (I reserve that designation for the wonderfully funky BODY TALK. That album cooks like nobody's business, like a lost James Brown album!). Not to discourage you, but there's a thing that Ron Carter does with his bass (or maybe he's doing this on a cello) that makes it sound like someone overdubbed the sessions with a Farfisa organ. Others may like it, but I find it distracting as hell.
  24. ...you don't do anything, ANYTHING, without consulting your music collection for something to listen to for whatever it is you're about to do (drive, sleep, shower, eat, sex, listen to music, work, etc)
