The Big Al track is the title track to the Three Sounds Beautiful Friendship LP. I knew @Dan Gould would quickly identify it but I'm still tickled he didn't immediately ID it. Mission accomplished. To re-iterate my reasons for selecting this track: Awhile back I was trying to build a discogs cart to the seller's minimum order and this was listed for very cheap. I like the 3 Sounds and I like how much fun those Limelight record covers are. Ended up enjoying the record more than I expected simply because I wasn't expecting a big-band record. A very enjoyable record. When Dan announced this BFT, selecting something from this album was a no-brainer as a simple tribute to the former Gene Harris Fanatic. I kinda figured he had this record, but this felt obscure enough to fool everyone else. Which, apparently, it did. As @tkeith said, "Big Al FTW!"

I can't tell you how big a smile this put on my face, especially since you weren't crazy about my BFT last year (putting it mildly, LOL) and I didn't stray too far from the overall sound of that BFT. I'm seriously glad you dug this!

My wife and I love her. We caught her show at the Majestic last year and it was hilarious.

Another Peanuts soundtrack is being released and I am all in for it! AFAIC, they could release every single cue from the animated specials and I'd buy every one of them! Of the non-jazz titles, I'm seriously looking forward to The Birds, The Bees, The Monkees in mono and the Neil Young. I can't remember a previous time a RSD not only broke me, but also caused me to want to wait in line before the store opens!

Yes please, I'll take the link. Sorry you're getting screwed over, Thom.

Yes yes, the man's sound was definitely unmistakable!

Sonny Rollins: A Night at the Village Vanguard (Tone Poet -- 3 LPs)
Big Al replied to Mark Stryker's topic in Re-issues
The strangest thing happened the other day (interestingly it happened the same day the Org board was down): this was available for streaming on YouTube Music but it only lasted for a day because it's gone now. I'm not sure how or why it happened. I'm just glad I was able to listen to it for the brief time it was available. I don't know what magic Joe Harley & Co worked on these tapes but these performances sounded phenomenal! Almost like you were there at the Vanguard! I can only imagine how good this is going to sound on the actual LP or CD (I'm planning on getting the LP). I was on the fence about this release prior to hearing this what must now be called a "sneak preview." Having heard it now is like hearing it for the first time with clean ears. Prior to this, this album had never made an impression on me; the other day, I couldn't stop listening. It all clicked tremendously! So yeah, I'm definitely looking forward to this release now! -
Correct on the ID! I wish I could tell you that was exactly why I chose this track because I love that explanation. In fact, let's just pretend that was my reason. 😊 As it turns out, this was just a happy accident: awhile back I was trying to build a discogs cart to the seller's minimum order and this was listed for very cheap. I like the 3 Sounds and I like how much fun those Limelight record covers are. Ended up enjoying the record more than I expected simply because I wasn't expecting a big-band record. I'd buy this and wouldn't even gripe about the price. -
I'm pretty sure no one wants to hear me gas about my own track. @Dan Gould oh I dig this groove! And this arrangement! I have no idea who this is but I can't wait to find out! @danasgoodstuff Again, no clue but I'm really digging it! @Dub Modal early Bird? I could listen to this sound for hours! @Eric this has a "jazz workshop" kind of feel to me, a kind of composed organized chaos. Take that for whatever it's worth: I rarely know what I'm talking about. @mjazzg Really digging the groove here and can't wait to find out who this is! @randyhersom To the moon, Alice!!! Good stuff! @Rooster_Ties I'm digging the electric piano. A little too long for me but it has enough magic moments to keep me interested. @sidewinder Good stuff. I like how the bass swirls at the end! @webbcity I was gonna suggest Freddie Hubbard on Atlantic but the recording sounds too recent. I dig the groove and I also like it that, since the track order defaulted to the alphabetical arrangement of each Board member's name, this track ends up being the closing track because it sounds like a closing track! Well, that was thoroughly uneducated and misinformed on my part. 😄 I really enjoyed how all-over-the-place this was!

Here's a YouTube link to the Stop Driving Us Crazy video. It's pretty trippy and the soundtrack is very groovy! Nice BFT, Dan! I'm glad to know that I own none of these recordings, which means I wasn't remembering anything at home and my memory isn't as bad as I think. I think. In any event, some choice cuts to chase after for sure! 👍

No no no... it truly was a lunatic asylum! -

I miss those online listening/insult parties. Those were a blast. -
Now we know which Cows team showed up today: neither. Even Captain Bligh didn't suffer this kind of mutiny...

BFT 240 AKA 20th Anniversary AKA Everybody contribute a Tune SIGN UP
Big Al replied to Dan Gould's topic in Blindfold Test
Just sent mine. Hope it's not too offensive. I promise it's not Percy Faith (even though the temptation was there) 😁 -
Funny thing: this was issued on CD not more than a year after this thread was first started.

Music to my ears! Not sure how I missed commenting on track 12. I liked it enough. On second listen, the guitarist reminds me of Wes. Not knowing "Misty" by its name is still a source of frustration for me.
-
I hope you're serious here. I LOVE Percy Faith! Likely not to the extent you do but I have all his Christmas albums and some of his latin-flavored records. 😃

1. Dizzy Gillespie "Watermelon Man?" 2 thru 4 were groovy little jam sessions I thoroughly enjoyed listening to but I honestly didn't realize I'd listened to all three of them until track 5 started. 5. Gotta be the Duke on piano 6. If that's not Art Blakey on drums, I will gladly hand over my lifetime membership in the Art Blakey Fanboy Society. And then I will attempt to find this slab of vinyl as penance. 7. Gonna guess Wild Bill Davis. I'm probably not even in the right decade. 8. Well, it took me all afternoon to remember this is "Now's the Time" and not "The Hucklebuck." I think I have this at the house but haven't listened to it in years. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna kick myself once I find out the answer. 9. Another tune I should know the name of but I don't. Is it Sonny Rollins? 10. Okay, this is just torture: I routinely hear THIS EXACT VERSION in my head but I can never identify it! So, I'm just gonna go ahead and play the Bird card and say this is Charlie Parker so y'all can go ahead and laugh at me. As you should. I probably have this at home somewhere, too. 11. A Night in Tunisia. There, I can finally name that tune. I have no idea who this is but at least I know the tune. You'd never know I've been listening to jazz for the last 30 years... 12. Yet another tune I should know and probably have at home and the fact I can't ID any of it genuinely concerns me that my memory is leaving me. Highly enjoyable BFT, Dan! Nice way to start the BFT year!

As always, it will depend on which Cows team shows up. Also as always, I'm rooting for the Cowboys but understand anything can (and routinely does) happen.

Well, all's well that ends well: not only did my records deliver yesterday (Jan 8), but I also got a notification that my refund was scheduled to hit my PayPal by Thursday (Jan 11). While I'd hoped for either a delivery or a refund, I honestly did not expect both. Kudos to bluenote.com for following all the way through on their promises. Now I just have to fight the temptation to use the refund to take advantage of their current sale....
-
This was such an enjoyable BFT! Yours usually are, John, and this was no exception! I listened to "You Caught Me Smilin'" so much in December it now feels like a Christmas song! 😂
-
Well, here we are in 2024 and I've received neither my order nor my refund. The latest status on my order says it's now going to ship January 4. They didn't specify a year, so it could be 2025 for all I know. What a mess.
-
Received an interesting email: it says they're gonna refund my payment AND ship the order completely free of charge! It remains to be seen if this happens. If it does, I'll have scored three Tone Poets and a BN Classic! Now I wish I'd pulled the trigger on some of those other Tone Poets!
