Billy kicks ass on the Monk at the Blackhawk sessions. Bertrand.

Grant Green's 'Iron City' was used in an ad a couple of years ago, but I don't remember the product. Bertrand.

And on the topic of Wayne, I was just reading the following interesting passage in Fred Jung's Fireside Chat: 'FJ: Blue Note has just released The Classic Blue Note Recordings, a retrospective from sessions with Blakey and Morgan as well as signature material from your classics. There certainly is enough material to release a mammoth comprehensive homage. WS: That's up to them. That is up to whoever is running that. I think they are going to sneak in there and do it. FJ: Let me make some calls. WS: (Laughing) They might start getting in there and doing it after the Latin release of the last album (Moto Grosso Feio). ' Several things to discuss here: 1) Does Wayne really not know that Michael Cuscuna produces Blue Note reissues? I think he is being facetious. 2) Why would Wayne consider someone putting together a box set of his BN recordings as 'sneaking in'? 3) What is he alluding to with 'the Latin release of the last album'? Does he really mean Moto Grosso Feio, or is this an (incorrect) editorial comment by Jung? Moto Grosso is neither the last Wayne BN recording (it's the rejected session from 10/70) nor the last issued BN recording (Odyssey Of Iska is later, despite what the Moto Grosso Feio CD says). The 'non-BN' issue of Moto Grosso from a few years ago was on One Way, hardly a Latin label. Where am I going with this? I think Wayne is actually alluding to the October 1970 session, which we know that he does not want released. That's his call, of course, despite what he says to Fred Jung. When he talks about the Latin issue of the last album, I bet he is humorously alluding to a potential underground semi-legit release of this mystery session, and that he knows things like this have happened in the past in 'Latin' countries (is he alluding to Fresh Sound?). Unless the last session is already out somewhere, and no one has alerted me to this yet... Discuss. Bertrand.

Wayne Shorter turns 70 today. What an amazing career he has had. Think of all the different artists he has worked with (from Blakey and Miles to Joni Mitchell) and of the consistent brilliance and originality of most of his recorded output. I think only Miles comes close, and, honestly, I find Miles more inconsistent. And, at 70, Wayne is still going strong. He put out two great records in the last two years, and continues his off-and-on tour with his current quartet which has been together for over two years. Happy birthday, Wayne! Bertrand.

Help needed in treatment options for my Mom

Berigan, You and your family are in my thoughts in these difficult times. Bertrand. -
Matt Groening is apparently Mosaic's best customer (or something like that). Bertrand.

Vincent, Thanks for posting this! I will try to go somehow. Bertrand.

I got mine at www.daedalusbooks.com (I went there in person since they are in the DC suburbs), but they are out of most of them. Bertrand.

I have yet to see a 20-bit version of Monk volume 2. Bertrand.

Robert Altman's McCabe And Mrs. Miller. Bertrand.

Brownie, Are you sure there was a Jazz Prophets Volume 2 recorded? I was under the impression that Volume 2 never existed and never was recorded. The Volume 1 title was just wishful thinking. But I could be mistaken; I did not research this. Claude Schlouch in Marseille has a KD discography out. Perhaps this will shed some light. Bertrand.

The picture isn't very good, but I do think it's Michael Ridley, Larry's brother. The brothers do look alike somewhat. Another clue: when I saw Michael in D.C. (as part of a large ensemble called The Brooklyn All-Stars or something like that), Leonard Gaskin was also on bass. Michael Ridley told me at that gig that he used to hang out with Lee Morgan, and was at the Sidewinder recording session. He claims that Jackie McLean was originally scheduled to be on the date, in addition to Joe Henderson. I will try to remember to ask Cuscuna about this (or Jackie, Barry Harris or Bob Cranshaw if I see them anytime soon). What a sextet that would have been! Bertrand.

Dmitry, I'm no expert. I just agreed with b3-er that there probably is no legal reason that we can't link to photos on other sites. If this came to a problem, an attorney would be have to be consulted, something I'm sure b3-er does not want to have to do. He complied with her request - he just pointed out to her that she was very likely in error. His response was excellent. What law is she invoking? Bertrand.
-
B3-er, I liked your response to this moron. Indeed, no federal law is being broken by linking to a photo on their site! These lawyer types make me hurl. One discographer I know was threatened with legal action for listing boots on his site. He pointed out that it is not illegal to discuss bootlegs somewhere, or even list their contents, it is only illegal to offer them for sale. Bertrand.

You gotta warn us before we open these postings at work!!! Bertrand.

Ubu, I did not mean to knock the Swiss in any way. Your comment about 'proper German' just reminded me of this one woman who spoke *no* language fluently. It's not that her French or German were regional dialects or anything - she just did not quite speak them right. I have met many Swiss people who speak several languages fluently. No hard feelings, I hope. Bertrand.

Wayne Shorter and Jackie McLean. Bertrand.

Ubu, 'Three Wishes', the bonus track from Donald Byrd's Free Form, is also by Herbie. I asked him about it a few years ago at the Monk Competition, and he did not even remember the tune! About Swiss not being the same as German - I knew a woman from Switzerland who spoke English, French, and German, but none of them fluently; she had no mother tongue! Bertrand.
-
Re: Adam's Apple Herbie *is* the composer of the bonus track, 'The Collector' (although I couldn't find a copyright, but that doesn't disprove anything). This is the piece that was originally attributed to Miles and given the title 'Teo's Bag', a misunderstanding Miles did not make any effort to correct and may have had some part in creating (as Peter DeVries would say). Bertrand.

I saw Charles Tyler in the mid-80s in Paris - the first set was all Monk tunes. He played baritone most of the night. Bertrand.

Some of these artists are published by Don Sickler's company, Second Floor Music. I don't understand how hard it is to find out who to pay royalties to. Bertrand.

According to this Wayne discography: http://www.jazzdisco.org/shorter-dis/c/ Indestructible is 4/15/64, 4/16/64, 4/24/64 and 5/15/64. Night Dreamer is 4/29/64. So we now have almost irrefutable evidence that between 4/15/64 and 5/15/64, Lee Morgan was wearing some sort of bandage around his head. Here are the people who might know something: Wayne Shorter Curtis Fuller Cedar Walton Reggie Workman McCoy Tyner Elvin Jones Anyone intimate friends with any of the people above? I'll add it to my ever-growing list of questions to ask Wayne Shorter (question #1 on the list: When was Golden Boy recorded?). Bertrand.

...and there's a lot more unrecorded Dameron tunes sitting in the Library of Congress (and elsewhere). One is called 'Buy War Bonds Now'. Saxophonist Paul Combs, who is writing a book on Tadd to be published by University of Michigan Press, will no doubt comb through these (pun intended) and figure out what's what. If they are on the level of his wonderful recorded compositions, we are in for a special treat. A United Kingdom resident named Ian McDonald (presumably not the guy from King Crimson) also has a book out on Dameron. I think it's self-published. I saw it a friend's house. I don't know how good the text is, but the lay-out was real nice - it was an oversize book, chock full of photos. McDonald is apparently hard at work on a book on Hank Mobley. Bertrand.

When I talked with Ravi for about 20 minutes 4 years ago, all he could talk about was how much he loved Wayne. His father's name never came up. Ravi said that High Life was a masterpiece. Bertrand. -
Soul Stream, How was Dewey Redman? Who was in the band? Thanks in advance, Bertrand.
