  1. Aric, Why don't you call up Lou and ask him?
  2. OOPS! Revisiting this thread, I see that some people did not realize that I TOTALLY made up that story about the cowbell on 'Un Poco Loco'. Sorry about the confusion! Bertrand.
  3. Good to hear that Jackie was sounding good. I just found out he will be in NYC in December. I will be there. Bertrand.
  4. Brownie, Hank Jones is on Flute-In! That's hilarious! Here's why: Last month, Hank and Elvin played in D.C. Hank was handed a piece of paper with the name of a musician on it who was about to sit in. Hank made the announcement, but thought Bobbi was a guy! And now it turns out he actually recorded with her. Shows how much of an impression she made. Bertrand.
  5. The sketch was actually a clever allusion to the recording session for Bud Powell's 'Un Poco Loco'. Alfred Lion thought that Max Roach was using too much cowbell. That's why they did several takes of the tune. If you listen carefully, you'll notice that the cowbell on the Master take is a lot more muted. Blue Note legend has it that Max and Alfred almost had a fistfight over this issue. I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned in Richard Cook's book. Bertrand.
  6. I listened to this yesterday and noticed that the track called 'Early Morning Stroll' on The Breakthrough is the same as the one called '18th Hole' on The Flip. I will look at the copyright deposits at the Library of Congress next time I'm there. I know that both these tunes are in the Mobley box. I'm no musician, but my rudimentary piano skills should be enough to figure out what's what. Bertrand.
  7. I got lucky - I got my TOCJ during a Tower clearance sale for about $17 two years ago. Bertrand.
  8. Has anyone figured out where the four live tracks that exist on the current version of Live/Evil fit in? Since they have McLaughlin, I guess they are on dics 5-6. The titles are 'Sivad', What I Say', 'Funky Tonk' and 'Inamorata'. Bertrand.
  9. In the liner notes to Passing Ships, Cuscuna says that Woody Shaw covered two Andrew Hill compositions on his own recordings: 'Symmetry' and 'Catta'. Now 'Symmetry' is on Iron Man, but I can't find any session where Woody did 'Catta' (I checked the discography by Todd Poyner that resides on Mike Fitzgerald's site). Could Cuscuna have been thinking of Joe Chambers' version of 'Catta' which appears on The Almoravid? Woody plays on two tracks on this album, but not 'Catta'. Bertrand.

    Albert Ayler

Brownie, I recall an interview with Alain Corneau in Jazz Magazine where he said he had gone to New York in the mid-60s to film some musicians, including Ayler, but he did not get any footage of them. I think he did interview Bud Powell (who was living in a rat-hole) and filmed him. Are you still in touch with Corneau? Do you know if he has any Bud footage? Thanks in advance, Bertrand.
  11. The Reverend Baker's mission was not a total loss - at least they said grace before eating him.
  12. Ornette played at Carnegie Hall in late June.
  13. Richard Williams also was in the Gigi Gryce quintet near the end of Gigi's career and appears on 3 albums: Sayin' Somethin' The Happ'nins Rat Race Blues
  14. Maybe the other tracks on Agents Of Fortune didn't have enough cowbell for him?
  15. I hope this doesn't turn into another one of those 'how do you get sticky stuff off a CD' thread.
  16. John, How do you propose we do that Bertrand.
  17. At the John Patton gig I saw on 8/11/01 at the Fat Cat, NYC, they played 'The Cat' by Lalo Schifrin, which is of course the title track to a Verve Jimmy Smith album. I had to ask Ronnie Cuber what the tune was - I had never heard the album. I thought they had played a speeded-up 'Rumproller'! Bertrand.
  18. McCoy should be getting royalties for his five compositions on the CD, but otherwise, you are correct, they get no other payment (neither leader nor sidemen). If he is not getting royalties for his compositions, then either the person administering his publishing, or more likely EMI, is not doing their job. Hank Mobley's heir was his father, who lived very long - although I suspect he has passed away by now. I believe he had Hank very young. Hank may have had some half-siblings as well. Bertrand.
  19. jmjk, Thanks for posting that. I guess they still are not doing the protection thing, at least for now. Please tell me 'affect' is a typo on your part, not on theirs! Bertrand.
  20. I assume these are definitely not copy protected, then? Thanks, Bertrand.
  21. A release that dwarfs the new connoisseurs! Congratulations! The trick is to have the second child after the first has gone to College, or at least when he's old enough to baby-sit!
  22. This Wednesday, as part of their series on Washington DC-based artists, Strathmore Hall in Rockville MD (right at the Grosvenor metro) will have a tribute to Charlie Rouse and Leo Parker(!) at 7:30 this Wednesday, 10/8. The performers will be tenor/baritone Chris Watling and his quartet. I spoke to Chris (http://www.geocities.com/chriswatling) and he has a nice repertoire lined up - he did some research and even found a date they did together. Tickets are only $10 (301-530-0540). Hope to see you there! Bertrand.
  23. I had read in the Washington Post that EMI would not be copy controlling the US CDs. Where did you get your info?
  24. Re: the Lionel Ritchie comment. Saxophonist Bootsie Barnes does a very lovely version of 'Hello' on his album of the same name. So you never know.
