    Amy Winehouse

Still at work this chilly Friday eve (in spite of a friend's record release now well underway at the Living Room) and just happened by a colleague's office whereupon lingered the actual CD of Back to Black - an album which at this point I feel is not that great, except for the one tune I really like (Rehab aside, indeed a hook) - that one tune being TEARS DRY ON THEIR OWN. So I opened the little booklet within to spy that lo, Miss Winehouse wrote all those tunes except for TEARS DRY, which she wrote in collaboration with ASHFORD and SIMPSON, whose "Ain't No Mountain" it samples. I knew you'd all be as concerned about this matter as I. Thank you.
  2. I just got one delayed exactly six (6) hours, to the minute. Do you imagine that's some sort of "sign"?

    Frank Sinatra

Anyone seen this new book? The Atlantic review here.
  4. It may well just be my perception but I think jewishness is more cultural at this point than racial or religious. And dumpy does have a point - or she would, if we lived in anything like an actually global and open society. Unfortunately, the country and even this city seem to me more and more like a provincial town in some backwater backyard every day. Some days anyhow. Others, less so. Say we elected Barack Obama for instance: now that would be a good day. And of course this am I spent almost an hour on the phone buying season tix to Athol Fugard, Beckett and Shakes at BAM...
  5. At work they tell me Emma Peel meets Sarah Connor.
  6. Or: Do you think humankind has a safe and viable future on the planet over the next 25 years?

    LOCKJAW

Shiterature, I've heard that called. but ManoMan I love Lockjaw n' Johnnie Griffin rekkids.
  8. Are any of those people jazz artists? Ethan IVerson can play jazz but doesn't much with that band.
  9. Of only tangential interest, to be certain: I've been in a number of NY taxi cabs whose drivers told me that not a few of the Muslims in their ranks will, when they are together and off work at the garage, talk freely of their powerful hatred for Jews and say things along the lines of: it's a good day if a Jew gets hit, etc etc. So it may be a bit shortsighted to imagine that such tension doesn't exist here. Of course, it's just as bad from the other side: one has but to listen half-heartedly at most any corner to hear the din of unconscionable disinterest for the plight of both (vis-a-vis the war) native Iraqis and (vis-a-vis the Mid East conflict) the Palestinians being so forcibly nudged from their homes. From either front at any rate, I can't imagine that the Paper of Record noting a harmony could hurt. Unless its real interest was to foment disharmony.
  10. I think it's a happy story that a Muslim dove in too. Aren't Muslims - in general - semites anyhow? Mostly, however, the story reminded me of the amazing Henry Bean film, The Believer. Based on a true story from the 60s, but made contemporary (2001) an orthodox Jewish kid from Brooklyn joins an Jew-hating neo-fascist crowd. When a NY Times reporter discovers he's both, the fellow (the brilliant Ryan Gosling) threatens to kill himself if that's revealed. Anyone else see that?
  11. and you wonder why there aren't more women here. just kidding. how about an "i love pissing from cliffs" thread?
  12. Not having read this thread, I figured that I'd be the perfect candidate to make a Helpful Suggestion . Perhaps someone ought lay out a few simple guidelines in a User Agreement that would help avoid contention? No personal attacks, No spitting in the eye, Consult your higher consciousness before deciding to say things intended to hurt or irk...?
  13. Oh No! I like it here so. I'm on a food board whose denizens have migrated there from two other places - nary a one contention-free. And none as sofitticated about food as this place is about music. What does seem to work though is that two or three of a select crew of core, level-headed users rotate moderate for a few weeks at a time. I sure do hope all the wonderful info and exchanges here don't just disappear, however.
  14. Anyone heard this? Just saw this review in the Times. He's always down at the Zinc Monday nights when he's in town and though he doesn't really play jazz, he's never dull.
  15. the one drummer i think i actually despise, no offense.
  16. Greg Hutchinson and Montez Coleman are my picks for drummers with legs, after Tain of course. Ari Hoenig as well - he has a solo album on which he plays Night in Tunisia note for note, on a kit.
  17. All these drummers have their own bands too: Billy Hart Joe Chambers Ben Riley Tain Victor Lewis Victor Jones Charli Persip Joey Baron Cindy Blackman Terri Lynn Kenny Wollenson Al Foster Idris Muhammed Clarence Penn
  18. I remember talking to him once when he had just returned from a trip to Africa; I think it was at the Jazz Standard one night? Hilarious and adamant, in that spiced-sugar GC mode: what they don't do there, he said, was improvise. Much love to George.
  19. We caught Dave Brubeck last night at the Bluenote. Really beautiful show, far exceeded my expectations.

    Amy Winehouse

I don't think it takes superhuman powers of observation to see that she's simply wiping her nose on her sleeve there. Jeeze. Or do they really think she has her lil sweater dress lined with blow? Last night I dreamt I was at a party at Britney Spears' house in the Kentucky backwoods and her shack caught on fire. I watched as she walked into the house, killing herself, minutes before W and Laura arrived on the scene in a rocket ship.
  21. I remember being hooked in what? 1985 I guess when I heard a cassette tape of a roof party where Public Enemy was playing. In contradistinction, the appeal of the Beasties has always eluded me.
  22. How does the new one compare to Who Is? Cause, for me at least, that one didn't really have legs. I listened to it a few times, got to know it, and never put it on again. I like her voice though.
