  1. someone has mentioned Ku-Umba I trust? Edit: ah yes, Frank Lacy's here. I didn't see Julian Prister though! Who writes lovely tunes. Such as Long as You're Livin, which Abbie sang.
  2. http://www.kpfdigital.com/ ken's a lovely bloke.
  3. heard roy hargrove blowing on a tbone last night at fatcat. purty
  4. Just started The Elegance of the Hedgehog today, but I prefer the American the cover - the girl in moccasins - and quite like the title. That's what makes prize fights, right? A couple sweet quotes so far: "I think lucidity gives your success a bitter taste, whereas mediocrity still leaves hope for something." "What is an aristocrat? A woman who is never sullied by vulgarity, although she may be surrounded by it,"
  5. any reports? my bday's coming up...
  6. Of course from when it opened as a jazz club - it'd been a health food restaurant - in the mid-70s til about 2001 it was Sweet Basil...
  7. Caught my usual Thursday night gig last night - Lezlie Harrison at Sweet Rhythm. I love her voice so much - have I mentioned that? Really can sing. The degree to which she's grown over the last few years of hitting there weekly never fails to astonish me. Also love her Hammond C3 player, Greg Lewis. It was a little sad though, in that they're closing the club - for good this time. Anyone ever catch Bu there?
  8. I have some Lionel Richie we could mix in. Oh wait, I don't.
  9. Roy Haynes last night at Dizzys, where he's playing with Jaleel Shaw thru Sunday. I'm for sure headed back.

Both Dick Katz albums and the Gil Evans are tough to find. No one is even selling the Gil Evans on amazon; the Katzs are $30 a pop. Picked up Dream of You, HM w CB, Jelena and You've Got a Date though.

Is it me, or are the vocals in At Mister Kelley's all on one channel? And how 'bout that lil intro to But Not for Me!
  14. Someone wrote a play based on a small item in a TV documentary about Monroe - how she'd pulled strings to help Ella perform at the Mocambo, "the biggest – and whites-only – club on the West Coast." Love that
  15. Is it racist to say that he was one of my favorite white drummers of his era? Not so many swing that hard, Joe Morello to my mind the other stand out.

I think it was 8th grade I loved this rekkid:
  17. I think the question largely hinges on production. The great 50s and 60s BN albums SOUND GOOD, whereas digitized jazz doesn't breathe. I love to go hear new jazz live, but must say that I find precious few albums translate the experience of live music into anything I'm compelled to buy.
  18. They could sign profitable jazz guru Bon Jovi...
  19. Fuck.

  21. I think I just heard that Eartha Kitt passed too?!!?
  22. For Antonia Fraser
  23. Actually he was a huge Monkophile. In the brilliant filmed version of the Homecoming (dir. Peter Hall w Cyril Cusack, Ian Holm, the (at the time) Mrs. Pinter, Vivian Merchant) all the interstitial music is Monk's. Also they shared the same birthday, October 10.
  24. Finished The Polish Officer and plan to read more of Alan Furst's war novels soon. Man are they great. First though, Martha Gellhorn's Selected Letters.
  25. AH HA! Your profile says you're 24. Immature of me, I know.....
