  1. according to Lord they're the same track (Black Narcissus = Out 'n In) Henderson's Habiliment : Joe Henderson Quartet : Joe Henderson (ts) Hideo Ichikawa (el-p) Kunimitsu Inaba (b) Motohiko Hino (d) Live "Junk Club", Tokyo, Japan, August 4, 1971 'Round midnight (1) World (Jap)SMJX-10123, Milestone MSP9047 Black narcissus [Out'n in] - - Blue bossa (1) - - Junk blues (1) - - Note: "Black Narcissus" as "Out 'n in" (a retitling of "In 'n out") on Milestone, OJC releases. Milestone MSP9047 titled "Joe Henderson in Japan"; titles (1) are all edited on this release. This followed a pattern that the U.S. version aimed at keeping closer towards the usual 40 to 45 minutes per disk format of U.S. LPs, while the Japanese Victor release runs over 51 minutes long. All above titles also on OJC CD1040-2 [CD], Milestone 8MCD-4413-2 [CD]. [H4564]Add In Concert : Joe Henderson And Kikuchi Hino : Terumasa Hino (tp) Kohsuke Mine (sop,as) Joe Henderson (ts) Masabumi Kikuchi (p,el-p) Yoshio "Chin" Suzuki (b) Hiroshi Murakami, Yoshiyuki Nakamura (d) Live "Tokyo Toshi Center Hall", Tokyo, Japan, August 5, 1971 Sunrise in Tokyo Fontana (Jap)PAT1064, Philips (Jap)FX-8520 So what - - Get magic again - - Note: All above titles also on Jazz Door 12120 [CD] titled "Sunrise in Tokyo". 3. IUCC UPDATE: vol 8 and vol 11 shipping January 31 The next 3 IUCC series releases will ship FEB 21st and the final 3 will ship in March to conclude the series. thank you to all subscribers of the series - we appreciate your patience during the delays. the IUCC series is a monumental set of unheard recordings and it turned out to be a much bigger project than we anticipated and has taken longer to release than we initially planned for. We can't wait to share the remainder of the series in the coming weeks. Check back here for bi-weekly updates https://www.nimbuswestrecords.com/
  4. agreed - IIRC I saw the album listed on Spotify(with the 6/8 added) & the timings were similar to the original LP so I surmised the 6/8 was not actually present
  5. Manteca : Dizzy Gillespie And His Orchestra : Dizzy Gillespie, Quincy Jones, Ernie Royal, Jimmy Nottingham (tp) Leon Comegys, J.J. Johnson, George Matthews (tb) Hilton Jefferson, George Dorsey (as) Hank Mobley, Lucky Thompson (ts) Danny Bank (bar) Wade Legge (p) (jazz parts), Ray Concepcion (p) (Afro parts), Lou Hackney, Bobby Rodriguez (b) Charlie Persip (d) Candido Camero, Mongo Santamaria (cga) Jose Mangual (bgo) Ubaldo Nieto (timb) Chico O'Farrill (arr) New York, May 24, 1954 1711-4 Manteca (theme)Verve MGV8208, VE2-2522, (Jap)POJJ-1517, Verve 314-521737-2 [CD] 1712-4 Contraste Verve MGV8208, VE2-2522, (Jap)POJJ-1517 1713-4 Jungle - - - 1714-4 Rhumba-finale - - - 1715-2 6/8 (*)Norgran MGN1003, Classics (F)1424 [CD] Note:All above titles also on Not Now Music (E)NOT2CD316 [CD] titled "Gettin' Dizzy"; a 2 CD set. All above titles also on Verve (Jap)POCJ-2772 [CD] titled "Manteca"; see June 3, 1954 for rest of CD. All above titles also on Norgran MGN1003, Verve MGV8191, 2610047, Verve 314-517052-2 [CD], Classics (F)1424 [CD]. Here's the listing from Lord (online) - 6/8 is listed as a separate take (probably sourced from the Verve Discography) but unfortunately Lord places this in the original Norgran LP 1003 (which is incorrect) & doesn't mention the 3EP set.
  6. It's actually Reel Music (Good Time Distribution), Nashville, TN https://www.discogs.com/label/1859947-Reel-2?sort=year&sort_order=desc read the comments at bottom - I'm still dubious Interesting range of releases including a reissue (RSD release) of a somewhat rare/collactable Australian Album "Fraternity" from 1971 that included Bon Scott (AC/DC) & Jimmy Barnes (Cold Chisel)
  7. Currently reading Saxophone Trailblazer (Gary Carner - State Uni of NY 2023) & am enjoying immensely (of course I'm a Pepper Adams afficonado) Like the recent Threadgill tome this Carner book is not chronological (do like that format) He had a close relationship with the Ellington Orchestra - Harry Carney accompanied him when he purchased his first Selmer sax Rex Stewart was a major mentor & father figure & he was also very close to Thad Jones. The Joy Road project should accompany this book - both cover his many compositions https://motema.com/releases/joy-road-the-complete-works-of-pepper-adams-volumes-1-5-2/
  8. if that's the case (as I mentioned above) then there are two versions of 6/8(Jungla) on the EP - the total EP (6 sides) time is longer than the LP
  9. The original Afro-Cuban Suite released by Machito's Orchestra (Composed/conducted by Chico O'Farrill) was released on a Mercury 10" (505) & ran for approximately 17 mins (fits with the full track from the Charlie Parker Verve box set plus the reissue Verve LP I both have) Cancion, Mambo, 6/8, Jazz, Rhumba Abierta (Machito 10") =? Manteca Theme, Contraste, Jungla, Rhumba Finale (Gillespie's Afro) The Gillespie Afro version runs for a similar amount of time (just under 17 mins) - I presume 6/8 was part of this but not listed on the LP. I don't think 6/8 was extra material
  10. If that's the case then it's on the EP set twice https://www.discogs.com/release/12735433-Dizzy-Gillespie-And-His-Orchestra-Afro also, is it possible to get 12 minutes onto a single EP side? (Contraste/Jungla/Rhumba Finale)
  11. I've just noticed that Afro (Norgran 1003 - later released in 56 as Manteca on Verve 8208) was also originally released as a 3EP (7")(EP N-2002-3) set. It appears to have an extra track titled "6/8" that looks like it's never been released anywhere else AFAIK - LP or CD. Some discographies list it as unreleased & other list it as part of the original LP. Anyone out there with a copy of the triple EP set? I'm surprised the Andorrans havn't added this track to one of their DG releases. https://www.discogs.com/release/12735433-Dizzy-Gillespie-And-His-Orchestra-Afro This EP does exist as it turns up on auction sites https://www.popsike.com/DIZZY-GILLESPIE-AFRO-1954-Norgran-3-EP-NM-Beauty-Norman-Granz-SUPERB/200761522515.html
  12. Thanks I'd forgotten that Chuck was involved with those early Delmark releases
  13. Contacted Honest Jons last week & they're able to obtain it for me - just waiting for its arrival - I'm going to order a couple of double LPs (HJ's/Incus reissue twofer LPs with extra material) to even out the significant shipping cost to Australia - the book could probably be used as an anchor, it's so heavy
  14. was going to suggest Trunk Records for the Hum Dono LP - Johnny Trunk released it once the Dutton Vocalion LP went OOP - pressing got good reviews Just checked the site & it looks like that one has gone too - poor Joe!!! https://trunkrecords.greedbag.com/buy/hum-dono-6/
  15. Dutton Vocalion has released a swathe of Harriott related material (on CD & one LP) but unfortunately all that's left is the High Spirits/Movement twofer & The Don Carlos Orch https://www.duttonvocalion.co.uk/proddetail.php?prod=2CDSML8486 https://www.duttonvocalion.co.uk/proddetail.php?prod=CDNJT5324 Harriott - Movement/High Spirits (Quintet) Harriott & Amancio D'Silva - Hum Dono (CD & LP) One of the essential UK jazz releases Michael Garrick - Poetry & Jazz In Concert/Before Night-Day (Quintet), October Woman (Quintet), Black Marigolds (Septet), Promises (Sextet) Tony Kinsey Quintet - Jazz At The Flamingo Lita Roza with The Tony Kinsey Quartet - Listening In The After-Hours George Chisholm - Chis: The Art Of George Chisholm (octet) Melody Maker All Stars - Presenting Kenny Graham Don Carlos Orchestra - Crazy Latin
  16. Free Form, Abstract, Hum Dono with early material on the double CD compilation Killer Joe plus Michael Garrick Quintet (October Woman) & Septet (Black Marigolds)
  17. just found this wonderful rendition of "In A Sentimental Mood" by Joe Harriott with The Stan Tracey Big Brass (1969) - is this the same version from the Columbia LP "We Love You Madly"? - sounds like it. Apparantly this is the only known live footage of Joe. also, a few Harriott related clippings from newspapers https://galacticramble.blogspot.com/search/label/Joe Harriott
  18. twas called "Rare Tracks" released in 1975 (UK) & here in Australia in 1980 - love the Jethro Tull single "Sunshine Day" mislabelled as Jethro Toe It's actually quite a good comp from the time https://www.discogs.com/release/1348392-Various-Rock-Legends-Rare-Tracks Picked up my Triple Echo set when one of our Brisbane FM radio stations 4ZZZ went digital & offloaded all of their vinyl (late 80's?) The Valentines are highly sought after by collectors here in Australia plus the group Fraternity (Flaming Galah) where Bon Scott was a flute playing hippy before he changed his image to a hard rocker https://www.discogs.com/release/4881588-Fraternity-Flaming-Galah Kevin Ayers voice is one of the defining features of the Soft Machine that I gravitate towards (have all of his solo material) - his french version of May I (Puis Je?) is superb To me The Softs are Wyatt/Ayers & Allen
  19. both tracks were added on the 2009 UK reissue of the first LP this is my favourite softs period - Allen, Wyatt & Ayers +/- Ratledge/Hopper https://www.discogs.com/release/2378052-The-Soft-Machine-The-Soft-Machine
  20. Love Makes Sweet Music / Feelin' Reelin' Squealin' - UK Polydor 7" https://www.discogs.com/release/445900-The-Soft-Machine-Love-Makes-Sweet-Music-Feelin-Reelin-Squeelin https://www.discogs.com/release/2033931-Soft-Machine-Faces-And-Places-Vol-7
  21. Agreed, I thought this was one of the most comprehensive single musician reference texts when I received my copy over 10 years ago but for me this has now been surpassed by the Rick Lopez Magnum Opus "The Sam Rivers Sessionography"
  22. https://theafterword.co.uk/labyrinth-british-jazz-on-record-1960-75-by-richard-morton-jack/ https://www.elvinyl.com/listings/3939843-books-for-sale?fbclid=IwAR0uPv70f2J92wnHy02Vzz_ynCr04fG1JBPKiDmZy0SNLATxWNm4SQ-VSvw coincidently I just ordered I've also sent a message to Honest Jon's asking if they intend to carry Labyrinth
  23. Even though it's less "Jazz Rock" I'm partial to the very early Softs (proto Gong) Daevid Allen/Kevin Ayers/Robert Wyatt +/- Ratledge & Hopper - much more anarchic & lyric laden - most reissues (primarily live concerts) appear to revolve around the early to mid 70s
  24. many thanks, account created (easy as) & just spent 2 hours perusing plus taken screen shots of the book. Excellent analysis with the vast majority of this material now on CD/digital media Wonder if Cook & Morton used this as a primary reference source for their ratings especially the crowns/5 stars
