Thanks for all the help to summarise, it appears that There is only one version of "Bones for Zoot" (5:40 - recorded March 59 & released on Jazz Immortal - PJ 3, ST 20139 & possibly PJ 1214 - waiting on this one) & is an edited version (or possibly alternate take) of "Brushes" (4:21 - released on PJ 20 - Zoot Sims Choice). An edited version appears more likely knowing Richard Bock's history of "tweaking" the PJ tape stash over the years. Sorry but I switched the timings - Bones for Zoot should be 4:21 & Brushes 5:40

According to the Lord data you posted (where exactly did you get it?) The Source I am using is the Lord Discography, Version 8.0 (I have the disc) Maybe somebody else with a more reliable discographical source can clear this up completely. My "Main Man" when it comes to sorting out Pacific Jazz problems is James Harrod - he's in the process of writing a text on the label (including discography). Hopefully he'll see this thread

I've copied extracts from the Lord Discography, stating that there are two versions of Bones For Zoot, one from 54 with Annie Ross vocal (sextet) and another from 59 (Sims/Freeman Quintet). The 54 "version" was made at the end of a Clifford Brown Session sans CB (?). The discography also claims that the two versions were on similar LP's (PJ 3, ST 20139). I strongly suspect that there is only one version (but which one?). I used to own the Clifford Brown LP ST 20139 but don't remember which version was on that LP) & I've never owned the US version of AR's A Gassser (have a TOCJ version without the extra tracks) - what version is on the CD?? Is there actually a vocal version? Have just obtained a few CD's from Peter Ind's site/label (UK based). For those unaware Peter was a core member of the Tristano/Marsh/Konitz axis. He has been releasing material (mostly taped by himself, some live, some studio) on his Wave label since the 60's. A large amount of it has now been transferred to CD - sound quality is excellent. I know this is a long shot but does anyone out there have decent spare copies of the first & second discs from the Giuffre Mosaic box. Recently picked up the set (actually on this forum) in lovely condition but sans Discs 1 & 2 (have CDR's of these). Would be nice to complete the set with the original discs. Have tried Mosaic without luck. Happy to trade (have a decent list) or pay $$ Please PM me if interested

Have just finished reading Derek Ansell's very interesting recent publication on Hank Mobley. A man shrouded in mystery, especially in his last years. I didn't realise he spent so much time in Europe/UK & am surprised there is so little recorded material from that period. The Europeans for the most part thoroughly documented (audio & televised) visting US Jazz musicians. Was Hank considered more obscure?? - I can't imagine that, especially with his numerous Blue Note releases & Hard Bop affiliations. Derek mentions a live recording (boot) he has listened to from the Cafe Montmartre with HM stretching out on extended versions of some of his compositions - would love to hear this. Hank also played engagements at Ronnie Scotts (67 & 68)- some of this must have been recorded?? I've contacted Tony Levin (drummer at the 68 date)through his Rare Recordings site. Havn't heard back from him yet. Any other HM fans out there know of circulating live or studio material from this period.

Have just purchased the 5CD Ellington Reprise set - the european Warners (non US) reissue of the late 90' Mosaic box They've done a nice job of this, even including the Mark Tucker booklet that came in the original Mosaic set. The CD's come in cardboard mini sleeves (have always liked this - I know a lot of you out there don't) - I use the cellophane mini inner sleeves (can get them from Japan via USA) They protect the discs from being scratched. Also saves a lot of space. Only problem with this set is that booklet is in German (Spiegel Edition stamped on front cover) - wasn't advertised as that!! Does anyone know if an english version exists (was it also pressed for the UK?) - the booklet is held in with an elasticised cord & comes out easily Anyone know who would be best to contact (at Warners), if an english booklet does exist. If looked at both the UK & German Warner sites & they don't even have the set listed. I may have to try Mosaic & see if they have any of the original booklets left

I'm wondering why RRK's first Atlantic session (live), Here Comes The Whistleman has never been included within the Collectables stable of releases. It has been previously released through Atlantic/Warners, Water & the M label. Maybe Joel Dorn was not involved with it? Also, Collectables claim to have released (info that comes with the two box set releases) all of RRK's Atlantic/Warners sessions in the two (5Cd & 7CD) box sets - these appear to be the already issued Collectables releases (including an Ornette Coleman session - twofer release) put into two boxes. Here Comes The Whistleman & Bright Moments are missing. Can anyone comment on the audio quality of these releases - I've read that many/most of the Collectables Atlantic transfers are not up to par.

Have just obtained Art's Soul Finger CD (originals) - there appears to be lineup variation between the liner notes (likely taken from an original sleeve) & some of the discographies I have (Lord, Japanese Jazz Discography). The CD states the recording dates were May 12-13, 1965 & the only saxophonist was Lucky Thompson (playing ss & ts) On the other hand my discographies list Lucky Thompson as playing ss & only on one title, Spot Session (quartet & dated 21 April) whereas Gary Bartz (as) was present (on the other dates in May) Can anyone confirm that Gary Bartz did play on these sessions & Lucky Thompson was only on Spot session - I'm sure I can hear a tenor sax on some of the other titles Cheers & thanks for any advice

Have just been given 4 NDR Jazz Workshop LP's (1965, 66, 67 & 70) - amazing what turns up here in Australia. All of the above LP's contain a stellar cast - Wes Montgomery, Leo Wright, Carmell Jones, Nathan Davis, Paul Bley, Steve Lacy, Evan Parker, Albert Mangelsdorff, Manfred Schoof etc...... Unfortunately the lineup details are a bit sketchy on the LP covers (no recording dates listed either) The Lord Discography does not list a number of the titles & there is musician variance between this and the record cover details. I'm sure I read recently on this forum that there are more details regarding these sessions (many have not been released in vinyl or CD form). Have gone to the NDR website but cannot find anything archival relating to the jazz workshops. Any feedback would be welcomed Romualdo

I've always thought Haig would make a worthy Mosaic project--especially his later stuff, but some of the earlier material too. I suggested it once. Not that they get many suggestions.... Suggested a Mosaic Select of his 50's material (Esoteric, Period, PJ etc) a couple of years back - If I can recall, Mike C cited licencing issues as a problem. The Andorrans (Fresh Sound etc) have made a partial attempt at this but it's never the same as a Mosaic job. Stephen/Romualdo

I know the Commodore Series would probably be too voluminous to place here but would anyone have a list of Chu Berry's Commodore releases. I don't think the Lord Discography is as comprehensive as the Commodore/Mosaic one. Maybe this has already been done here ? Thanks in advance

Anyone out there with a copy of the Mosaic Chambers/Kelly Complete VeeJay (MD6-205) set that would be prepared to copy (eg AIFF files onto a disc or MP3's) a few titles/alts from the Frank Strozier Dec 9, 1959 & Feb 3, 1960 sessions. Unfortunately I didn't pick this up at the time as the Australian Dollar was dismal (like now but a bit worse) & missed out. Have tried Mosaic for possible straggler/single left over CD's but to no avail. I'm a Booker Little fan & there are 7 titles (see below) I'm trying to source. I even have a friend in Japan trying to find the double Strozier CD that had some of these.
