Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - Live at Jazz Workshop 1970
romualdo replied to barnaba.siegel's topic in New Releases
looks like Sam has pressed the Davis set three times, initially a run of 1500 (2018 - when I picked up my copy), a second run of 1000 in 2019 & now a third of 2000 in 2021 which is what DG will be selling. So, a total of 4500 so far - there must be quite a demand for Nathan's output. -
way too expensive IMHO especially for material that has already been previously released - they could have added the still unreleased Copenhagen concert from the same tour
-
Been listening to Horace et al for over 25 years & have virtually all of his released output & a few unreleased live recordings (FLAC files of live concerts i sourced a number of years ago - with Steve Lacy, Vancouver 93, with Carter/Bradford, Austria 87 & Germany 92, with Blythe, California 91, with Arkestra & Teddy Edwards, Chicago Jazz Festival, 93, HT Octet, Italy 87 The only release that has eluded me is the LA Octet recording on the Japanese Americana label - never seen a copy of this for sale - have been looking for a number of years now - wondered if it had actually been physically released (CD). The lineup is very similar to the live Verona, Italy concert I have - they are only 3 months apart - Verona has Arthur Blythe on tenor whilst Rastine Calhoun replaces Arthur on the later LA recording.

I'm a sucker for Tapscott recordings - went for the subscription (will also help with shipping costs to Australia) second the merging of the two (related) threads -

Shipping notice today (from Nimbus West) to Australia. Also, got in stock notice from Dusty Groove but now OOS (temporarily?) on their website https://www.dustygroove.com/item/141973/Pan-Afrikan-People-s-Arkestra:Live-At-IUCC-11-26-78-Church-Recordings-Vol-1-2CD-set?sf=arkestra&incl_oos=1&incl_cs=1&kwfilter=arkestra&sort_order=artist -
I'm sourcing mine (Rivers & Henderson) via JPC (Germany) - very reasonable shipping charges to Australia (just over 10 euros for those CDs plus the Edelhagen WDR Orchestra triple CD set)
-
The new JH CD with extra tracks is now available (again) via Jazz Messengers https://www.jazzmessengers.com/en/95684/joe-henderson/the-complete-an-evening-w-joe-henderson?mc_cid=5c37a815ad&mc_eid=5c16ab7b46

RIP Ahmad - another legend gone Coincidentally I've been playing the recently released 4CDs "Live At The Penthouse" on rotation since receiving them two weeks ago - superb music Highly recommended IMHO
-
was really hoping for a Black Saint CD box set of Spearman's work when those BN/SN boxes were in full swing - 4 CDs under his own name & four (IIRC) with others (Trio Hurricane & ROVA)
-
just saw this thread: I've also been following these new Red rereleases (with a bit of confusion) since I saw the CD/LP listings on the Jazz Messengers site but not finding the Joe Henderson CD with three extra tracks (these apparantly have been previously released according to the Lord Discog - different label though) on the Red site. Also, when you click on the Sam Rivers CD link in the new release page it goes to another artist. Don't think they've revamped their website well enough. I suspect Jazz Messengers jumped the gun especially re the Joe Henderson set.

Honest Jons in the UK is a great source for jamaican/West Indian music (including jazz) - their series "London Is The Place For Me" is worth picking up https://honestjons.com/shop/search/london_is_the_place_for_me They also carry a great range of Brit improv/avant jazz - they've rereleased quite a bit of the UK Incus label (including previously unreleased material) on their vinyl imprint

Second that one too & so would Stonewall (Dan S - another board member), both of us having communicated with Jack Chambers in the past BTW Jack's bio of Dick T was published in 2008 https://www.amazon.com/Bouncin-Bartok-Incomplete-Richard-Twardzik/dp/1551281414 looks like it's OOP though second hand copies are circulating

have played the box twice now & no issues you describe BUT some of those discs are (again) tricky to remove without snapping them, especially the "inside" ones

Which Box Sets do You Regret Buying, and Why?

that's one of the 4 (of 38) that I never picked up - why didn't it appeal to you? -

you won't find it under Tapscott - it's listed under Pan Afrikan People's Arkestra -
It's a Blue Moon (Sp) release - under the umbrella of Fresh Sounds? - currently OOP https://www.freshsoundrecords.com/clyde-bernahrdt-ike-lloyd-sylvestre-mike-freddie-strong-albums/554-the-complete-recordings-1945-1953-vol2.html?search_query=clyde+bernhardt&results=3

truly amazing set - 32 years old now AFAIK it's the only way you can source official CD versions of the Clyde Bernhardt/Kansas City Buddies & Pigmeat Markham/Jimmy Shirley sessions (both only ever previously released as 78s) or have they been released on some individual TOCJ CDs?

interesting 11 min Claes Dahlgren interview (possibly his first recorded) with Cecil Taylor during a break at his 5 Spot stint in '59 From Lewis Porter's site https://lewisporter.substack.com/p/cecil-taylors-first-recorded-interview

Great reasonably recent (2021) article on Albach, Tapscott, PAPA & Nimbus West https://www.analogplanet.com/content/horace-tapscott-tom-albach-and-story-nimbus-west-records -
That's what initially suggested (to me) that the ezzthetics series was legit, these early previously unissued releases

The Mosaic experience!!! my JATP set finally arrived after over a month of shipping time - the third Asendia fiasco (last three Mosaic orders) When I ordered the recent Sam Rivers book/discography from the states it took 5 days. I doubt if Dusty Groove will get any copies of a run of 250 - wasn't willing to take the chance - they should have created at least 500 to 1000 copies -
wow!! this thread has been going (on & off) for almost 20 years BTW I have a decent slice of Walt's material on CD (Verve Elite, Prestige/NJ/OJC, Steeplechase, Whynot/Candid)
-
Yep, I have a recording of their collaboration at the BBC Studios - must have been round the same time
-
Lloyd Swanton has played on many australian jazz recordings since the early 80s (on quite a few of the Bernie McGann sessions/releases) Would love to check out Cafe Oto especially if Evan Parker played - he's on my bucket list - London beckons I'm a huge fan of the Brit (& Euro) Improv scene I was actually born in London & family migrated to Australia in 1961

So long since I played it, can't remember - recorded in Russia will have to give it a spin were you aware that Tony Buck played/recorded with Tarasov from the Ganelin Trio (one of my fav jazz combos)
