  1. Thanks! I admit to not keeping up with Confront enough, it's a lot. Dog Star is new to me but looks excellent. Hammer, Roll, and Leaf is indeed great. I haven't heard Stumps from SAJ yet but Rotations is very strong, I need to pick up CDs of both sooner rather than later. And very much looking forward to hearing the new 2xCD from Cafe Oto once it hits the US, the overseas shipping is just too much for me. Plan to check out the Foster trio and Lifeline discs (as well as the new Shifa CD on Discus). The two latest McPhee discs on Klanggalerie and RougeArt are good quite good, as are the Graewe on Random Acoustics and the Perelman/Shipp on Tao Forms. Some others that I have enjoyed a fair amount so far: Das B - Love Stefan Keuene/Sandy Ewen/Damon Smith - Two Felt Tip Pens: Live At Moers Ab Baars/Oscar Jan Hoogland/Uldis Vitols/Onno Govaert ‎– Loot Camila Nebbia/Kit Downes/Andrew Lisle - Exhaust Fred Moten & Brandon López – Revision Tatsuya Yoshida & Martin Escalante - The Sound of Raspberry and a lot of great archival stuff: Irene Schweizer, Marco Eneidi, Rashied Ali/Frank Lowe, Joe Maneri, Jimmy Lyons, Cecil Taylor/Tony Oxley, AMM/Sachiko M, Stabbins/Tippett/Moholo, Joseph Holbrooke, Sun Ra So overall, hearing a lot of good new stuff but not a ton that is grabbing me overmuch.
  2. the Melford is excellent. one of the few albums from this year I’ve really enjoyed. would love to hear what folks here have been into.
  3. Fantastic price on that amazing and very hard to come by Rivers set! I always sensed they pressed very few of those and the Tolliver big band ones given how rarely they turn up for sale.
  4. Wouldn't necessarily count on that. The Joe Henderson CD was similarly overpriced no matter where you looked. Hard not to feel like this is related to them having such success getting people to shell out for the Tone Poet LPs.
  5. One of my most treasured BN releases. I paid about $30 for mine 16-17 years ago, which was a deal at the time.
  6. Yes, definitely thinking about all those Barry Guy sets on Not Two that sort of kicked this whole thing off. Those are all uniformly excellent. Fundacja Słuchaj also got in on the action and also put out a number of fantastic ones. Some specific favorites: Various - Long Story Short (arguably the best of them all in my book) Ken Vandermark - Resonance Joëlle Léandre – A Woman’s Work Zlatko Kaučič – Diversity Steve Swell - Kanreki: Reflection & Renewal Agustí Fernández – River Tiger Fire The Black Saint/Soul Note boxes were a great line. I would say the Bill Dixon is completely essential, and the Threadgill, Motian, Hill, Lyons, Haden, and Ran Blake ones are also very, very strong bodies of work. The ECM Old & New Masters line was also great in this vein-- the Motian and Arild Andersen ones especially. A few others, randomly: Various - FMP Im Rückblick - In Retrospect Sven-Åke Johansson – Blue For A Moment Sven-Åke Johansson – The 80's Selected Concerts Various - Just Not Cricket! Jürg Frey – Weites Land, Tiefe Zeit, Räume 1 - 8 Bengt Frippe Nordström – Vinyl Box Peter Kowald - Discography I would also second the Hemphill on New World, Wood Flute Songs, Nation Time, Evan Parker, Ahmed, and all the ones on No Business.
  7. unfortunately in the larger jazz CD world (i.e. major labels) these sort of died out around 2010, but the box sets that started to come out of the free/improv world constitute a small golden age in my book.
  8. Arguably controversial but I think the very best Mingus music is on that set. the 1964 band is maybe the greatest *band* ever, but I think the ‘65 material is Mingus‘ peak as a bandleader & composer. I would never want to be without it and this is a great price.
  9. Beautiful words Karl. Thanks, and thanks for the music you were able to make with him. A special shout-out as well to Alexander; Keep Your Heart Straight is one of my favorite of Louis’ recordings, and that is saying a LOT.
  10. Knew his health had been on the decline, but this is still a gut punch. An incredible human being, and one of the greats in this music. I am glad he is at peace and reunited with his brothers.
  11. George Braith posted on Facebook that the bassist Don Moore has passed away. He performed memorably with Archie Shepp/Bill Dixon, Don Cherry, the New York Contemporary Five, the NYAQ, on Jackie McLean’s High Frequency session, and on Clifford Thornton’s Freedom & Unity, among others. A pioneering bassist early in the evolution of free jazz. RIP. https://www.boulevardfuneralhome.com/obituary/Donald-Moore
  12. Very psyched to grab the Frank Wright. I have the LP but about 1/4th of it is unplayable.
  13. The Ayler ones at least are official releases, and definitely the best of what he's put out in that vein. The rest is widely available elsewhere. Releasing stuff as commonplace as the Miles Prestige and Monk Five Spot recordings is laughable to me, and seems like a waste of both time and resources.
  14. From what I've seen, a lot of the sets from the early/mid-90s that are in the 4-6 CD range are the ones that sell for the least, with some exceptions. The 7xCD sets that became pretty much standardized in the early 2000s go for a bit more. In the last few years I've picked up several of these 4-6 disc'ers in the $25-50 range.
  15. Wish we knew what the status of the Emanem stock was. I really hope somebody can take it on and make the catalog available again.
  16. I second Oliv & Familie aka John Stevens Spontaneous Music Ensemble (Marmalade). Desert island music. Transitions on Emanem with Caroline Kraabel and Charlotte Hug is fantastic. Live At The Bastille with Joelle Leandre & Lindsay Cooper Alfred Harth's This Earth on ECM Two with Irene Schweizer: Live At Taktlos (two tracks) and Storming Of The Winter Palace Iskra 1912 - Sequences 72 & 73 (two long pieces) a piece on LJCO's Three Pieces For Orchestra (one piece) I have long been intrigued by this 1994 tape from a group with Marcio Mattos, Roland Ramanan, and Michael Garcia but have never been able to track down a trace of it: https://www.discogs.com/release/11718184-Wooden-Taps-Wooden-Taps
  17. Fully delivers. An incredible disc, easily one of the most exciting and unexpected archive releases in years. Per Peter Margarask: "On the horizon in the series is a late 1980s solo performance and recordings from the Feminist Improvising Group—the radical ensemble formed by Maggie Nicols and Lindsay Cooper, which included the pianist for most of its history—the first officially released document of the ensemble’s work."
  18. Just don't let those auction house ghouls ever get ahold of your collection!
  19. Listening now to this excellent new release out today: https://sunnysiderecords.bandcamp.com/album/this-time
  20. Intrigued!
  21. Really looking forward to this one, big fan of those Shipp String Trio albums.
  22. Yeah, you tend to have to look at the fine print.
  23. Nope, wholly different unreleased studio session from 1979. Maybe not as transcendent as the Emanem material, but well worth having.

    So, Jay Rosen?

He was essentially the house drummer for CIMP and graces many of those discs. All that I've heard have been elevated by him. He also led a few dates -- Canticles For the New Millennium with Vinny Golia, Paul Smoker, and Mark Whitecage is especially good. He also played on the Joseph Scianni dates. Another that I'd call out beyond what's been mentioned here is CutItOut, an awesome 2006 Leo disc with Gebhard Ullman & Chris Dahlgren. edit: one more that just came to mind, from CIMP: Slaves of Job alongside Dominic Duval to make a trio with Ivo Perelman. One of IP's strongest recordings from the days before he was firehosing them.
  25. I was really looking forward to those ones, but stopped holding out much hope after awhile. Hopefully they can still get them out.
