  1. There is a box sitting at my local store. It kills me to look at it.
  2. What other RCA material might make for a good set? I admit I'm not too up on their holdings save Louis, Paul Desmond, & Sonny Rollins.
  3. Wish I could have the Mosaic, but I just snapped up the last of these sessions in one fell swoop over the last few days. Can't wait to hear the material!
  4. Seems like a deal enough to me. It couldn't have cost much less than that from Mosaic at the time. edit: Yep, $96 originally. Not a bad "markup" at all.
  5. I bought it 'cause the lineup intrigued me, but alas it was what I expected. Not my thing.
  6. Ha, I'm prescient! I ordered this a couple months back knowing this might happen. Same w/ the Mobley, I have a feeling that one might disappear from right beneath our feet.
  7. Why not? Does paypal work? PM me.
  8. $12 or trade for one or two CDs. In the latter case, just let me know what you wouldn't mind getting rid of.
  9. Mr. Cuscuna said in a fairly recent interview that there would be more, along with unreleased live Andrew Hill and (I think) Wes Montgomery stuff. I'm skeptical at this point.
  10. I got the Lonehill Ivory Hunters. Sounds fine to me, and it has some Newport tracks with Don Elliott and one other thing tacked onto it that I can't remember. I would also highly recommend the Columbia Piano Player album. It has the third movement of "All About Rosie", "My Funny Valentine" from Jazz at the Plaza in '58, a couple tracks from a Dave Pike session, and some duet and trio cuts with Eddie Gomez from the BE Album sessions. A good buy; I think it's like 5.99 at Amazon.
  11. Of all the pre-LP era artists, for some reason (no distinct periods/affiliations a la Louis, Duke, Basie, et al? No clear-cut box sets?), it's most difficult for me to get a sense of what I should get to have a more or less comprehensive Sidney Bechet collection. I have the Proper box set and plan on getting the Mosaic select. So else what might you recommend that's in print and affordable?
  12. Yeah, speaking of which I was skimming the notes to the On Green Dolphin Street CD today and they include his linears from the 1975 Peace Piece two-fer on one page, and his notes on the session from the Complete Riverside box on the other page...they're basically identical. Real illuminating ...
  13. The Teddy Charles Prestige/New Jazz recordings would be a treat.
  14. Well, true. I guess I was just thinking about the straight-ahead stuff. The 60s/70s material would make a fine box on its own.
  15. While this would be cool, is there anything besides the BN 50s sessions and his three Prestige albums? While all of those are out of print, they were available for years and can still be had.
  16. Interestingly enough, Jacknife is by far the most expensive item with the cheapest going for almost 70 bucks.
  17. Here's what I've mocked up from looking at Amazon. 18. I think the on-location engineering is great , the music itself merely good , given the talent involved . Brock Peters I find simply dreadful . Coincidentally , I just noticed that today is the 50th anniversary of this recording . Well, I was in the mood to hear Bean and he comes through fine to me on that one.
  19. Still a Carmell Jones available for 37.99 at http://www.reckless.com
  20. "Ascension (Edition II)" I think for the first time I've finally "heard" it.

  22. Pulled it out the other day for the Five Spot date. Great stuff.
  23. Yes, yes. Ornette's Atlantics are nice at the beginning of a late night, too. I Also second the person who said Merrill/Christy/Connor/et al, and of course Idle Moments. Johnny Smith's Moonlight In Vermont is perfect for those woozy evenings in. Birth of the Cool I've found Braxton's first two Aristas sound very nice around 2 AM when you're meandering. I also enjoy Louis late at night-- any of the Hot Fives & Sevens or Plays WC Handy. We should start an opposing thread: morning jazz. Personally, I find just about any Miles or Monk to be very invigorating at the beginning of the day. Same w/ Jeru.
  24. I'm still waiting for the Mingus Debut, Dolphy Prestige or Trane Euro boxes to hit cut-out status. But maybe that won't ever happen.
