4. Is there another source for those Wilen set? Are they noteworthy? I suppose this should be the Paris concerts: THE UNISSUED 1956/57 PARIS BROADCASTS Reference: DIS-126049 ALL TRACKS PREVIOUSLY UNISSUED This release presents rare ever before heard Miles Davis performances taken from Paris broadcasts made in 1956 and 1957. On the majority of these recordings, Davis is backed by a quartet that consisted of Frenchmen Barney Wilen, René Urtreger and Pierre Michelot, plus American expatriate Kenny Clarke, while the long version of “Lady Be Good” pairs Miles with the great Lester Young. Two additional unissued broadcasts by the Miles Davis Quintet with Sonny Rollins, taped at the Café Bohemia in 1957, have been added as a bonus. [1-9] MILES DAVIS, trumpet BARNEY WILEN, tenor sax (out on 8-9) RENÉ URTREGER, piano PIERRE MICHELOT, bass KENNY CLARKE, drums. [1-6] Broadcast from the Olympia, Paris, France, November 30, 1957. [7-9] ORTF TV broadcast, ORTF Studios, Paris, France, December 7, 1957. [10] Same personnel as above except LESTER YOUNG (ts) replaces WILENand CHRISTIAN GARROS (d) replaces CLARKE. ORTF Radio Broadcast, Salle Pleyel, Paris, France, November 2, 1956. [11-14] Bonus tracks: MILES DAVIS (tp), SONNY ROLLINS (ts), RED GARLAND (p), PAUL CHAMBERS (b), ART TAYLOR (d). 5. Saw it on Berkshire Record Outlet, but actually able to get it cheaper through Amazon UK, provided I ordered it correctly (have never ordered from there before). The 3 pound shipping charge seems low for a 13 CD set coming to the USA. 30 EUR (incl. VAT) at amazon fr. I have the previous 10 CD set that goes up tp 1955... http://www.amazon.fr/Live-Recordings-1948-1957-Miles-Davis/dp/B005HPQ7KK/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1326019420&sr=1-1
  6. Great! Both of your above recommendations are available! All my thanks! I ll wait and see if any more recommendations will come and will order tomorrow.
  7. In various discussions here, it was stressed that live recs of the Stan Kenton Big Band can be really good. Could you please provide me some recommendations on CD? Many thanks! I checked this one that looks interesting:

  10. Which are the other five? I have the Ella/Hollywood and Getz 7" Hip-O Boxes. Got the Ella, the Peterson (both locally, half price in a closing store... otherwise they'd have been ridiculously priced here!), then more recently - all thanks to this thread - the Getz, the Nat Cole and the Dinah Washington. But please don't ask me about sound issues etc. - I'm no audiophile, and with the exception of horrendous RVGs such as "Capuchin Swing", or old dead Columbia CDs, I can rarely tell if something sounds really bad. Thanks! I will try to purchase what I do not have since they are not available for ever (it seems the Peterson is not anymore widely available). The sound in the Wes box is exceptionally good!

  12. Safely arrived today from Amazon.it. It is a LOVELY box. Can't wait to go home amd listen to it .Some comparisons must be made, since all of the contents are in my (and most of us I assume) collection in various incarnations... crazy...
  13. Might be worth cancelling and pre-ordering with Amazon Italy! http://www.amazon.it/Movin-Complete-Verve-Studio-Recordings/dp/B005CAAUGM/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1317794847&sr=1-1 Asuming the Italian economy doesn't melt down.. They are very reliable! Thanks for the tip! Just shipped by Amazon.it !
  14. I ordered 2 weeks ago the 3 boxes of their complete Django Reinhardt (3 boxes, 7 double Cd sets each) from Amazon.co.UK. 42 GBP/box and 60 GBP/box, i.e. 162 GBP for the totality. Very good price since normally each 2-CD set costs around 25 GBP, resulting to 21 sets x 25GBP/box = 525 GBP. 42 GBP 60 GBP 60 GBP

  19. ...which arrived today... #127 for the Luncerford and #4816 (!) for the Hampton set! Those are two GREAT sets! #4816, that means the Hampton might be moving to the "Running Low" category soon....Get it while you can everybody! I was ASTOUNDED with the sound quality on this set, and the music is very enjoyable. Some of the best uptempo Hodges playing I've heard. Also, you can't beat a horn section of Benny Carter, Chu Berry, Coleman Hawkins and Dizzy!!! Me too. The Hampton set sounds amazing! And I went directly to these Dizzy (w./ Charlie Christian) tracks. Fabulous!

  22. Also this one: GEORGES APERGHIS Crosswind Geneviève Strosser viola XASAX Marcus Weiss tenor saxophone Pierre-Stephane Meugés soprano saxophone Includes booklet with text by Patrick Hahn 0012942KAI - 2009 tracklisting: (01) Crosswind for viola and four saxophones (1997) 12:51 (02) Alter ego for saxophone (2001) 7:53 (03) Rasch version for viola and saxohone (2006) 6:07 (04) Volte-face for viola (1997) 8:52 (05) Signaux version for 12 saxophones (1978) 13:17 TT: 49:25 He would not have been the first well-known composer for musical theatre who neglected the less “spectacular” varieties of music. But unlike the “symphonic form”, which Georges Aperghis has been rarely considered ever since his initial attempt in 1972, chamber music recurs throughout his œuvre. As though staging a theatrical work, Aperghis plays his game in a chamber-music hall with ever-new instrumental combinations, at the same time creating a connection between them and European musical tradition. He is always seeking voices. “It is similar to seeing the image of someone in a photo and wondering how their voice sounds. Is it nasal, is it high, is it low? Were they breathing heavily or easily? An instrument always remains the same. But the real question is: how does the voice of this instruments sound in this piece?” (Georges Aperghis)
  23. Just ordered the Hampton and Lunceford sets!
