It sound strange to me because Tauhid was first issued on ABC Impulse! black/red label according to Goldmine in mono and stereo and WLP are usually mono, but I have a orange/black stereo copy.
Goldmine is wrong? Say it isn't so!.
I bought "Tauhid" as a new release, and it is on the orange label. Btw, "Karma" was the first record I saw with the new black label w/ red border. Not saying it was the very first, but it was among the first.

I bought the box last year, having owned the 1960's 3-LP set since it came out.
Positives: The sound is terrific, expertly mastered by Mark Wilder. I'm not always happy with Mosaic's mastering, but this one is superb.
I was already familiar with most of the music, and I can highly recommend this set for the many classics it contains, and the lineup of great players - Bill Harris, Sonny Berman, Flip Phillips, Red Norvo, Dave Tough, Stan Getz, Mary Ann McCall, et al.
Negatives: I wanted everything by this band, especially the material that had been left off of the LP set. Unfortunately, most of the tracks that were new to me were forgettable vocals by Herman. The compilers of the LP set had made their selections wisely. The new set does contain a number of interesting alternates, however.
I find Loren Schoenberg's micro-detailed liner notes really superfluous. I wonder if Loren was being paid by the word.

There is a new Mosaic Herman - the Columbia album "Woody's Winners".

I too was impressed with how great she looked and sounded. Of course, she was very young when she started out, and is now 58. Not a spring chicken, by any means, but compared to a couple of the other acts on the show, a knockout.

I have another question about Contemporary records. I have received a Shelly Manne at the Blackhawk vol.2 that was sold to me as an original on Ebay but the label is brownish black. It is a stereo version. The label does not look like any of the yellow labels of Contemporary records. Did I get done??! Is it a reissue?
The early Contemporary stereo's were on a black label. You've got an original.

well thank god the store i thought that had a copy still had it, for only 6 big ones to boot (one store got the lp in for 25 big ones, would of had to get that if the cd store failed me)-- anyways suprisingly, the cd lists only bean, and "boddy"? smith, drums-- and p, org, b, and vocals are unknown
are they still unknown, as of today, 3-5-07? or does anyone have the info? (brownie-chunks, im looking in your direction ;) )
I don't know that any new information has come to light since the publication of the Savoy discography. These sides were recorded for the Chicago-based Parrot label on May 27, 1954, and acquired by Savoy a couple of years later. The drummer is Buddy Smith, btw.
Hawk is in fine fettle on this date, even if the setting is less than ideal.

The Chess Paul Gayten CD (Chess King of New Orleans) credits "possibly Ray Abrams" as the tenor on "The Hunch". The track was cut in New York, btw, even though it was issued on the Detroit-based Anna label (which was distributed by Chess).
