Generally I've got a pretty high opinion of Mosaic, but they have dropped the ball a couple of times. The sound quality on the Art Blakey set was poor, and I can't understand the reasoning behind the Duke Pearson Select, which contains some of his weakest material.

I saw it. Its definitely not bad, and is fairly entertaining. However, the entire time I was watching it, I kept thinking to myself how it had all the ingredients to be a really great film, but ended up being just a good one. Something was missing.
I had a similar reaction. I also felt that Washington's portrayal, despite his statements otherwise in interviews, probably made Lucas seem a little more likeable than he actually was at the time. Washington was far more convincing of a bad guy in "Training Day".
I agree with the above opinions, although I will say, that at 2 hours and 40 minutes, it moved right along, and I found it very entertaining. The performance from Russell Crowe was surprisingly low-key. Some fine characters in the secondary roles, especially Ruby Dee. I did find the portrayal of Lucas' well-oiled operation very interesting.

The equipment dealers had no choice but to demonstrate on Audio Fidelity Records. The company never achieved widespread success, however, and ceased operations by the early 1960s.
Not entirely true. The company existed well into the 70's. Their most successful acts were the Dukes of Dixieland, Al Hirt, and they had a big hit with a middle Eastern album entitled "Port Said".

You know, I've heard a lot of same things about Jo Stafford. Then, I listened to her in various interpretations she recorded for Capitol label. And all I can really tell is that we are dealing with one of the most perfect, clean, rhythmically unmistakable and real jazz singer - finest of them all - to put it shortly (and that is just right the same what Billie Holiday said about her).
I don't know whether I'd call Stafford a jazz singer, but it really doesn't matter. She's a fine singer with a wonderful feeling for a song, and a beautiful understated style that really does a song justice. Aside from the overtly novelty fare that Columbia foisted on her, her recorded output is of a consistently high standard.
She's one of my absolute favorite singers, jazz or otherwise.

I only know Marchel from his recordings - never got to see him in person. A beautiful Texas tenor player.

Kinda like the George Braith Blue Note 2-fer? Looked good on paper, not very happening.
