  1. I don't what they're calling themselves these days, but it's always officially been known as the New Orleans Jazz AND Heritage Festival.

As someone who has attended it many times, I'm not in favour of the likes of Paul Simon and so on getting a gig, but it should be noted that it has never been billed simply as a jazz festival - the likes of Fats, zydeco, cajun, Mardi Gras indians have always been integral to the festival.

I attended the Festival four times in the years 1979-1989, and there was always a strong jazz presence, with at least one stage devoted exclusively to jazz, both traditional and modern. Aside from the many fine local jazz artists who played, I saw Sonny Stitt, Art Blakey, Sam Rivers, to name three. I remember a group that was under George Wein's leadership that included Warren Vache, Scott Hamilton, and Harold Ashby (who blew everybody away).

  2. Not sure if anybody's mentioned the latter-day Pablo small group sides. Overall, a mixed bag, but there's some good stuff there, often w/Lockjaw Davis on hand to get frisky.

Yes, I like the Pablo small group stuff a lot especially the "Basie Jam" series. Norman Granz certainly had a way of putting the right musicians together for maximum blowing potential. Also like the albums with Joe Turner, Zoot Sims, et al. Most of the big band sides on Pablo are a little mechanical for my tastes.

  3. I have a 45 of "Dew Drop Inn" that is absolutely killer. Don't recall what's on the other side though.

Is this tune the exception or the rule?

It is from "The Rill Thing", which is pretty strong throughout. As I said, the next two albums were dogs.

  4. I have a couple of the Onyx LP issues of Jerry Newman recorded material - Don Byas and Art Tatum. I'm wondering if the High Note reissues have either improved the sound quality or added tracks to the Onyx issues. I expect not, but I'm curious.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

I have the Art Tatum - no extra material, no significant sound improvement.

  5. I bought "The Rill Thing" when it came out and liked it a lot. The subsequent albums were disappointing. Of course I've never heard the unreleased album, but I really don't think this set is a must have.

  6. Were there more than 8 tracks on Red Bird/Blue Cat? What were the titles?

The Charly LP contains the same eight tracks that are on the Red Bird compilation. Apparently that's all there is. It also contains ten tracks recorded for Imperial, six of them originally unreleased.

  7. Thanks for the answers, Stefan. I was so sure I had #3, and I'm surprised about #7, a musician I usually like. That's what so great about these BFT's. We get a chance to reevaluate musicians we take for granted, and to have our eyes (ears) opened about musicians we may have ignored or taken lightly in the past.
