hi frm france; this record was the first Hank I got in the seventies. I Liked it and listened to it a lot and I began to collect all the mobley's records I could possibly find. Today of course I have got all of them and I think "a caddy..." is obviously not the best even if it's quite enjoyable. I have loved it so much when I was young that I have named my french blog ( http://acaddyfordaddy.blogspot.com/)"a caddy for daddy". I remember at this time I didnt know what a "caddy" meant...

as I am a french I have had a lot of opportunity to see JG performing, talkin with him a lot of time too. more, I live very closely from his "castle" ( which is a real french -small- castle ) . jonny griffin is definitely one of the best thing wich happens to jazz-and to music.

I'm french and I plan a travel to san francisco ( next september ) where I have never been before. as a jazzfan I'm interested to see good jazz live but internet do not really help me to find good clubs ( except YOSHI'S ). is someone here who can help me ? thank in advance ( and sorry for my english ...)

i'm a big fan of guarnieri since i heard him with lester young ( keynote ) . he recorded for "black and blue" with slam stewart, who was the leader, an album called "fish scales" , infortunately it was not the best of his carrer ( nor for slam )

Yep . Are there any other rare Savoy covers you'd like to see ? Actually, if you could re-post that Barron cover (for Motivation), that'd be great. I can't think of any other covers off the top of my head right now, but, heck, surprising us with a few rares one would be fun! Here are two Bud covers that I think don't get seen much ... i've the record of bud powell ( on the right ) . I think it's the original. it's some tapes made by the french friend of bud, francis paudras, at home in paris. on this record we can hear francis playing "drums" with 2 brushes and a newspaper. it's one of the most affecting record of bud.

I've ordered it from amazon last week ( 20 euros, shipping included ) i'm waiting for it. maybe tomorrow. i'm looking forward to read it. I'm a big JG fan who, BTW, lives no far from my home...

Ce titre a été écrit en hommage à Marcel Fleiss, un photographe français passionné de jazz. Un autre titre (" Burt's Pad ") est dédié à un autre photographe (Burt Goldblatt). this title was written for a french photograph named marcel Fleiss ( maybe fleiss means "furrier" in deutch ? ) an other title, " burt's Pad" is dedicated to a photograph: burt goldblatt. sorry for my english. I'have just finished the book of derek ansell. infortunately if i can read english i'm not able to write properly. so my contribution in french fot the happy few... Je viens de terminer ( c'est une lecture très rapide :160 pages toutes mouillées ) l'essai de derek ansell sur hank mobley, seul bouquin à ma connaissance consacré, jusque là, à l'ami Hank. Lecture faite le débonnaire ansell n'en sait pas plus que moi. La vie de hank, et singulièrement les 15 dernières années de sa vie demeurent un mystère total. Ansell en est réduit ( comme moi ) à exploiter les « liner notes « de ses ( heureusement ) nombreux albums, chez blue note essentiellement, trois interviews données en tout et pour tout, une à val vilmer de melody maker et une à down beat en 73. les explications de cette incroyable obscurité pour ce musicien unique par son originalité et son abondante production sont diverses. Évidemment le style de hank était très loin de la flamboyance de ses contemporains du même niveau, rollins et coltrane. Idem pour ses ainés comme dexter gordon. De plus , hormis à charlie parker, comme tout le monde, il ne se rattachait réellement à aucune école. Pourtant ce musicien qui a joué avec miles, monk, ellington, dizzy, art blakey et créé une oeuvre considérable est toujours resté dans l'ombre. Une autre explication tient sans doute à sa personnalité, extrêmement introvertie. Une anecdote que nous révèle ansell est significative. Lors de ses passages en club, après les sets, au lieu de rester avec les autres musiciens, hank se réfugiait dans sa vieille buick sur le parking et ne revenait que pour jouer. Évidemment ça ne facilite pas le business. De fait il n'a jamais dirigé, autrement que sur disque, d'orchestre, il en était incapable. D'autres musiciens ont connu ce type de trajectoires ( pepper, chet baker, bix ) mais ils étaient blancs et donc pouvaient endosser le costume de héro romantique. A l'époque, pour les noirs , ce costume n'existait pas. Quoiqu'il en soit revenons au bouquin; il faut le lire bien sur.Ansell est pénétré de l'idée de l'importance considérable de hank mais, hormis des analyses techniques et/ou artistiques de son oeuvre, vous n'en apprendrez pas plus. Cedar walton avance l'idée que, au début des années 70, hank conscient de son incapacité à survivre musicalement dans le monde free jazz/ fusion est allé se cacher à philadelphie pour ne pas monter sa déchéance à new york.
