Tracks 9-15 are a previously unissued 1950 concert in San Francisco's Veterans Memorial with guest stars Wardell Gray, Stan Getz and Zoot Sims. Each one of these great sax players is given a showcase tune and they finish the concert all blowing great solos and trading fours on Hollywood Freeway. Wardell is featured on "Indiana" , Zoot on "It Had To Be You" and Stan on "Out Of Nowhere" The date 1950 is doubtful though. I would say maybe 1953,only because Stan earned the Metronome All Stars in 49 and the announcer says that for 5 consecutive years this young man earned the Awards. So do the math ) Denis

Of all the live recordings of Charlie Parker discovered over the years
Denis replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Discography
My God, there are so many. I think you said your "...favorites" so it is ok to give more than one I love all of Bird's radio broadcasts from Birdland. There is one from Cafe Society May-July 1950 playing "Moose The Mooche" with among others Tony Scott, Kenny Dorham, Mundell Lowe, Dick Hyman Of course "An Evening at Home with The Bird" -- very relaxed jam session Finally "The Happy Bird" live from Christy's in Boston. Wardell Gray, Walter Bishop, Mingus, Dick Twardzik are some of the personnel. I think I could find lots more. Denis -
Thank you for posting those wonderful links. Brew Moore, Zoot Sims. Who could have thought we would enjoy these ? How about this one from Stan Getz Stan Getz Ghost Of A Chance So many more to enjoy. Denis

Wonderful news. Kenny Dorham was another unique original musician. One note and you knew it was him. Can't wait to listen to this. I love live sessions. Denis

Of course Johnny had a lot to do with it. He was a jazz fan. Just listening to the Tonight band was wonderful. (Conte Candoli, Pete Christlieb and so many others). Yeah Johnny sure loved it. Here is a nice clip Unbelievably great Nothing like that anymore. Denis -
Well count me in as a Chet Baker junkie. For me it's his musical instincts. Chet played from the heart. Always melodic and not afraid to take chances. If there ever was a jazzman, he was it. Saw him live a couple of times. The only time when it was really distressing was at a duo concert with Paul Bley in the late 80's at the Montreal Jazz fest. After having waited for Chet to make it to the hall, he was completly strung out. Could not play his horn and kept falling off his chair. The concert had to be cancelled. So many Chet's recordings, of course all of the mid 50's dates in Los Angeles with Russ Freeman. Also all of the Prestige's dates in the sixties with George Coleman. I heard that Chet felt cheated by the producer for these. I love the way Chet described how Bird hired him when he came to Los Angeles and he was looking for a trumpet player. Some tracks are available of Chet and Bird at the TradeWinds club. Denis

Wow, that must have been awesome. Wonderful news. Denis

I could not believe that Brew Moore had been recorded live at the Open Door. Mid 1953. This is the same year we have Bird playing there with Monk, Roy Haynes and Mingus. Bob Parent's beautiful pictures. This was billed as the Tony Fruscella Quintet Tony, Brew, Bill Triglia, Teddy Kotick and Art Mardigan. The sound quality is surprisingly good. Side One as two long tracks : Sometimes I'm Happy and Blue Lester. Side Two as three tracks : Hackensack, Imagination and Donna. I love this recording. Brew blows so nice on Hackensack. How I wish Paul Haines had recorded Bird there Denis

Oh man that's terrible news. I talked to him last week at Upstairs. He was there for the Jensen Five concert. This guy was the father of jazz in Montreal. Very sad news indeed.

I also bought tickets for Saturday July 11th at Upstairs Jazz club , but guess what ? Yesterday the ticket office called me and they said that her agent called and cancelled the shows. No reasons given. I was so much looking for this show. Can't believe it. Denis

I have to add something here. When I first stumbled onto KCSM on the web of course (I am on the east coast ) I was really intrigued. Here was a station which was completely dedicated to Jazz. I just could not believe it. Well KCSM became my all time favorite. Of course I have my personnal tastes in music. But each time I listened, I found something to my liking. I think we all love this great art form, so let's not fight over semantics. LET'S KEEP IT ALIVE Thanks Denis

Yeah the artists + Audio archive is incredible. Great music.

Thank you Mr. Alfredson You echo my sentiment 100%. When I first registered on this board a little more than a year ago I was here for the diversity of opinions and the knowledge of all its members. Also the boards looked like they were well moderated. This is what impressed me the most. I don't post often but I am here everyday. Thank you for this great community. Denis

There's also a DVD called The Last Concert but the description at Amazon calls it the "last recorded concert". This has his regular group with Kenny Barron but on a couple of tunes from Apassionado adds synths. If you like latter day Getz I recommend this DVD. "The Last Recording" DVD is a must. This was recorded July 18 1990. The music is sublime and as a bonus the camera work is great. Beautiful shots showing Stan in full flight. As an old timer myself I love "On A Slow Boat To China" and the beautiful Johnny Mandel tune "El Cahon". The sound is perfect. Incredible music. Stan recorded at least two more times as far as I know. In February 1991 with Abbey Lincoln and his incredible performance at the Montmatre Club in Copenhagen with Kenny Barron in March 1991. There are a few more unissued performances around that time. Denis

Wonderful set. I echo Jeff's comments about Bird's live recordings. Over the years I have collected most of them. I used the Piet Koster & Dick M. Bakker discography, which was very valuable. Thanks also to Bob Parent for those wonderful pictures of Bird at the Open Door. How many nights did I look at these pictures of Bird, Roy Haynes, Charlie Mingus and Monk and just heard the sound in my head. But now luckily thanks to Chan it's all there. Of course the band is different on the Ember records but the feeling is the same. Of note, Al Haig which can be heard in there. Thank you.

Nice one, thanks, do you have discog. or even a link to a discog. for this one by any chance??? Even a track listing??? Cliff I use the following discography for Stan http://digilander.libero.it/nrascio/index.html I find it quite complete and accurate. Of course I haven't seen many updates lately. Good work. Now the Birdland 1952 sessions have been issued on many bootleg labels. If you don't have it, your best bet is our Andorran friends at http://www.freshsoundrecords.com/ Denis

Killin'. The real, raw shit w/Stan, Horace, Jimmy, Tiny Kahn, (I think Al Haig) on some things. They were really on. Jimmy's sound is so raw it sounds like his amp was picking up alpha waves! ROY. G. BIV come in.... Stan is fierce, like I said. He's somehow more extroverted than on Storyville, though that stuff is great too. Unless I am mistaken it would be Live at Birdland in 1952 w/Getz. Starting from April until August 1952 Stan's band played Birdland quite often and luckily we have this music. Of course Stan Getz at Storyville is much more well known. But maybe because this is a bootleg it is less available. I searched the Stan Getz discography and Jimmy did not play with Stan at Birdland in 1950. I just love Stan's band at Birdland. Jimmy of course is there. Either Duke Jordan or Horace Silver and even Charlie Mingus in August 1952. Absolutely a must. Denis

Denis, there's a video on youtube of the Woody Herman Herd with all those guys, Stan, Zoot, Al Cohn---if I remember right they all get a solo on Northwest Passage. There's a guitarist shown briefly and not featured. He looked like Jimmy but I wasn't sure. He had a crewcut, which threw me. Yes I have seen that video of course. Just incredible. Stan, Zoot, Al and Serge Chaloff with Shorty Rogers. But I had not paid any attention to the guitar player. I checked again. I looked at discographies and Jimmy is listed on guitar on the Northwest Passage track. Not sure 100% but it looks like it.

You're welcome. The concert was at Carnegie Hall, 1980, so who knows? If not officially, I'm sure fans/players snuck in recorders on the sly. I remember another set that same concert was led by Dizzy, and had Stan, Dexter Gordon, Chuck Wayne, and I think Walter Davis, Jr. Jimmy told us Stan hated playing with Walter. 'Hard snd glassy'. But he started describing Walter Bishop, Jr. When this was pointed out he said 'same thing'. Jimmy cracked up at that. Thank you. Love the story about Stan's description of Walter Davis Jr. and Walter Bishop Jr.'s playing. Funny (-: I tried to find a review of that particular concert but to no avail. Only found a few reviews of Stan's quintet and Dexter at Carnegie Hall July 1980.

Thank you for this thread. Just a marvellous musician. Truly a master. Anybody knows if any recorded music is left from that meeting with Stan, Al and Roy in the 80's ?
-
I love this session. Beautiful standards, sounds and ideas. An explosive front line with a stellar rhythm section. Well it could not be anything else with guys like Gerry, Stan, Lou, Ray and Stan (-: As a matter of fact I am listening to "That Old Feeling" right now (-: Denis

So sorry to hear that. I love Joe's sound and feel. He will be missed. Denis

Daniel, great story. I was really intrigued by this. I tried to track down this article in the Dagens Nyheter for October 14 2008. To no avail. Could you help me find it please. Thanks for your help Denis
