I will be eternally grateful to Boris Rose. Without him there would not be those beautiful nights at Birdland with Bird. These waves would be gone forever unless we catch up with them when we master faster than light travel. Now one more treasure from this incredible archive. Stan Getz at Birdland 1961. Two dates in November with Steve Kuhn, Jimmy Garrison and Roy Haynes. Thank you for keeping Symphony Sid. Again Stan shows us why he is a master. From Fresh Sound http://www.freshsoun...ed-cd-5789.html Luckily we can get it on ITunes also. Now going back to Birdland for a nice set.

anybody here actually hear Charlie Parker back in the day?
Denis replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
About that Massey Hall Concert. More information can be obtained in that wonderful book by Mark Miller "Cool Blues Charlie Parker in Canada 1953". All about Parker's performances on CBC TV and at the Chez Paree in Montreal and the Massey Hall Concert in Toronto. -
Something similar happened to me last year. I was running a laptop with Windows XP and AVG for antivirus. The thing was getting to be quite slow. So I decided to change the anti-virus software to Avast. Well what a mistake I made. While installing the whole thing it came to a scratching halt. Could not even stop it or kill the process. The only way out was to hit the on/off button. So I did, but then it could not reboot. Somehow Windows was corrupted. Luckily I still had the installation CD for Windows. Finally was able to get it running again but only after many long hours into the night. Ahhh computer problems. We are now so dependent on them.

Getz/Gilberto, Astrud: their working relationship
Denis replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Artists
I reached out to her during "the incident" and in all honesty found her to be a very nice, intelligent, and reasonable person. She, probably better than anybody, is fully aware of - and readily acknowledges - her father's "complexities", having lived them rather than just reading about them or hearing about them secondhand. The story which started the whole imbroglio was indeed anecdotal, and related an incident that would horrify anybody about whose parent it was said. It's not like she hates her dad - quite the contrary. And she's heard - and lived - plenty of unpleasantness that she knows to be true. But she's also got good memories too. Like I said, she loved her dad, warts and all. I'm only bringing this up because, although there are plenty of oversensitive, hyper-protective, perpetually-in-denial jazz offspring (and parents, for that matter...), Stan Getz' daughter certainly does not appear to be one of them. Well said. Thank you. -

Terrible sad news. As a young man reading books about jazz with many of his iconic pictures, I kept dreaming about all of these magical places. Birdland, The Royal Roost ... Denis

Well, a long-time member of the Boss Brass trumpet section, John MacLeod, has for several years now been writing for and leading his "Rex Hotel Orchestra", so named for its last-Monday-of-the-month gig at a jazz joint in Toronto. It's much influenced by Rob, as you'd expect, even including two french horns, and staffed by a lot of BB veterans. A year or so back McConnell was in to hear it, and took over the mic to say something like "This band is better than mine, but I don't know why -- the writing's not as good". It got a huge laugh, as intended, but also showed Rob's competitive spirit was alive and well. McLeod's band has recorded a CD, and he's soon to self-release it. I'll let everyone know when it's available. Thanks Ted. I will be watching for it. I wouldn't even mind a little drive down the 401 to hear them Denis

Such a terrible loss. A wonderful, life loving man. He was so happy playing. It showed. It's like the end of an era. Who is picking up the mantle ? If you will allow me this link. I don't know the details of that recording but it highlights the best of the Boss Brass. The love of its leader. The Boss Brass RIP Denis

Another terrible loss. I heard him with Al Haig in the 70's in New York. RIP Denis

For a while(70's through the 90's) Sayyd Abdul al-Khabbyr (known as Russell Thomas) settled in Montreal and opened a jazz club called cafe Mojo(now closed) on Park Avenue. Most likely still living here. He taught at Montreal University. Of course he had a stint with Dizzy Gillespie. That's from memory (-: Denis

How is this listed on iTunes? I only see the first disc. I am on Itunes Canada. A few months ago I bought "Monday Night At Birdland" which has the following tracks : "Walkin', All The Things You Are, Bag's Groove and There Will Never Be Another You". The album cover art shows Hank sitting and holding his saxophone and adjusting his mouthpiece. The release date is Jan 01 2009. Hallmark 2009. Now six more albums have been added. The album cover art is all the same. Background blue cover, with writings in red. All from 2009 Makin Friends Records. There is "Monday Night At Birdland" identical to the one I bought above. And there is "Another Monday Night At Birdland" with the following tracks : "It's You Or No One, Jamph, Nutville, and Wee". Denis

The original LP's were on Roulette, not United Artists. It is unusual that Mosaic or Blue Note didn't issue these, but I guess Fresh Sounds beat them to the punch a long time ago. Thanks ! You beat me to it. Denis

Now we can download all of Hank Mobley's Septet at Birdland April 21 1958. Even though it's titled "Another Monday Night At Birdland". All on ITunes. Great to hear both sets with Symphony Sid. Denis
