I bought the Sheila Jordan album (on CD) about 20 years ago on the 4 star recommendation of Cook and Morton. Didn't really do it for me.

CDs personally delivered this morning! Very nice too.

You know, there is no sign of "Mayfair" anywhere but the front cover. It's a British record - the back cover states A&M, distributed by Pye Records. The labels have A&M, CTI and Creed Taylor's signature printed on them. The liner notes are fairly brief, with no band line-ups mentioned. I do like side 2, the tracks from "From the Hot Afternoon". Mine isn't this version, it's a British reissue from the 80s. Yet another player I've never previously heard, and probably wouldn't have bought.

Another from the recently bought collection.This appears to be tracks from two CTI albums (Summertime and From The Hot Afternoon). I've managed 20+ years of jazz listening without knowingly listening to any CTI albums. I like this....

Joe Maini plays alto on this. I read Lenny Bruce's biography many years ago - he and Joe Maini hung out together for a while IIRC. I'd not heard him until I played this record.,

From a collection of 450 LPs I bought from a man a few weeks ago. Lots of 1980s reissues of "big" albums - OJC, Fresh Sound etc. I'm listening to one a day!

Hymn To Freedom from Oscar Peterson's Night Train album. I'm a sucker for that kind of thing lately.

Enjoyed that. I was an REM obsessive between 1987 and 1991, though I didn;t see them live until they'd hit the big time with "Green". I listen to them very rarely, but when I do, it's an incredibly nostalgic experience (listening to "Driver 8" as I type). It's amazing how much you remember of songs you last listened to regularly 25 years ago. Pageant and Reckoning would be my favourite albums.

Interesting reading that. The Durham Light Infantry Museum shuts in two weeks - that was my dad's regiment during his National Service. I promised my son a trip to the Football Museum, so I'm sure I'll be back in the city soon.

I missed that yesterday. In fact, I think I we missed a good portion of the exhibitions as we got there not long before chucking-out time. Shame, I like Francis Bacon. I wonder if it will still be there in six months when we next go to town!

I/we went to Manchester Art Gallery yesterday. The usual stuff really, though there was a robot roaming around one gallery, and some digital art which I didn't much care for. There were a couple of impressive ceramic pieces, including one by Grayson Perry, which my wife spotted straight away. Actually, there was a sculpture by Antony Gormley (he of "The Angel of the North" and the "Another Place" sculptures) suspended from the roof, now I remember.
