  1. Tal Farlow went OOP approximately 4 p.m., AST.
  2. A used cassette of Joe Henderson's Double Rainbow in "acceptable" condition for $100. Haha, holy crap. Am I missing something?
  3. Santa brought me the Anthony Braxton set. I've loved the music for years, but wow! the sound surprised me. The producers did a great job remastering this music. By the way, my copy was #1852 which is high for being available for only 14 months. This will be gone in two more years at that rate. edit: spelling
  4. 1) AMG took these down almost as soon as this went to "Running Low". What the heck's up with that?! Maybe too many people sampling it in response to it going OOP? I know I played them all through once or twice and then bought the set a couple weeks ago as a result. 2) More like a "Nano-Me" being as those were some 70 LPS. edit: Looks like it's gone; mid-morning today. Close call for me as I ordered it only two weeks ago. I'm glad I did as there's some joyful and intelligent music here and it sounds modern (or maybe I'm just too old). I'm surprised to see so many Ellington Alumni. edit-edit: Those sound clips? They're back up now that it's too late to matter. That's just not right.
  5. I ordered this set last weekend. Mosaic has not shipped it yet; it's probably due to the Christmas rush, but it's never take them more than 2 or 3 days to ship. Thank goodness I have my new "Complete Cellar Door..." & "...On the Corner Sessions" to occupy my body and soul.
  6. Just a note for those contemplating buying this one; it's been on last chance since the last day or two of November.
  7. It's now gone. And apparently just today. I looked at the Mosaic site this morning and it was still listed. Now, as you said, it's gone from the list. I'm still not 100% sold on the whole set, but I like pieces of it enough that I'm glad I picked it up. Yeah, I'm pretty much with you CSB'. I'm glad I have it for the live Five Spot set, the trio date, and the Highlife album. I love Little Niles, but I already have it on vinyl. I can't stand the Uhuru album nor the few vocal numbers. The corny singing that closes the otherwise great disc two pisses me off even if the singer IS Commander Cisco's father from Deep Space Nine. So, all in all, I'm glad I have it, but it was missable IMO. Now - I bought the Dizzy Reece set at about the same time and that is certifiably not missable. I almost didn't buy it and the thought gives me nightmares. Don't miss that one folks. Got to say though, the mastering is on the loud side.
  8. Okka's My picture of Chicago Octet/Tentet was removed. Did I break a forum rule? Anyway, that's a great Brotzmann album with plenty of deep groovy hooks to mitigate the freer passages.
  9. Thank you mjzee, it was kind of you to go to the trouble. I should add that rostasi PM'd with a link to a 300X300 jpeg, so thanks to him as well, but yours is HUGE I'm quite fond of that album by the way.
  10. I don't have many LPs from Mosaic or any one else. Including the recent Monk I have three Mos boxes and 12 CD sets, but yes, I generally jacket LPs from my boxsets (Sonic Youth stuff and classical mostly). I would be curious to hear from someone who's been collecting LPs for years - does it harm a box to store them upright? I've only been collecting vinyl for 13 months There's probably a vinyl thread for this question...off to look for it.
  11. Man you guys are great for providing the original covers. Does anyone have the means to provide a scan of "Brass Bag", the album on Select 2 co-led by Tricky Lofton and Carmell Jones? It was on Pacific Jazz (ST-49).
  12. That may work for CD's but I think you're risking warping your vinyl when stored horizontally. Yes, I agree. I mentioned that I don't keep the CDs/LPs in the boxes. I can understand not making it far enough in to read that
  13. Well... but have you seen the politics forum? And Hi! MG Thanks, but my stubborn adherence to solipsism gets in the way of politics.
  14. First of all I do not think "most" of the music is pedestrian. A lot of it is not to my taste, but we're talking about a huge amount of music on offer over the years. I think the majority can be called very good to great. This coming from a guy who's primarily a fan of avant-garde and free jazz - not usually a Mosaic specialty. I'm going crazy over the recent Braxton and Threadgill sets by the way. As for that Ebay auction - he's asking about $15,000 too much; $25,000-$30,000 would actually be a reasonable asking price AND he would see a good profit. He would have a better chance of making closer to the asking price if he sold them individually, but that would be a heck of a lot of work and could take years. I don't like storing my Mosaic boxes that way (upright like books). It causes uneven forces on the bottom corners. I had my carpenter buddy make a deep case with low shelves so I could lay 3 mosaic boxes flat, side-by-side. The shelves are high enough to allow one more box be stacked on top of each. The 5' case has 20 shelves and puts far less stress on the boxes. I don't keep the CDs/vinyl in the boxes. If there's an award for most-long-winded-unsolicited-remark, I won it. No, I don't own 120 Mosaic boxes yet. edit: spelling
  15. I decided to let the Carmell Jones and Randy Weston Selects go. The Carmell for some reason ran out quicker and I dealt with it, but damn! the Weston's lasted a month and I couldn't take it any more. It was like it was waiting for me. Anyway, despite only liking my Pure Pleasure vinyl reissue of Little Niles I decided to buy the Weston Select. OK - now you can go OOP little fella. : )
  16. WarpedOrb

    Anthony Braxton

Medjuck, what's the number of your Braxton set? I heard these are selling well so I'm curious. Thanks. I hope your's isn't the penultimate copy. Sorry, that wasn't funny.
  17. Well, looks like it's gone.
  18. I emailed Mosaic on Nov. 16, 2008 asking for information on the GW box; I wondered if a lease applied to this set. They replied: "we will offer them until the last one is sold". They said 50 copies are left.
  19. Of all my Mosaics I seem to go to the J.J. Johnson one the most; Elvin Jones second. My new, and newly OOP, Hodges is quite good but offers no surprises. The Lang/Venuti set is not so good and I'm selling that one for beer money.
  20. are you confusing purple night and night of the purple moon in your comments? purple night has a weird ghostly sound to it. purple moon does not. but sun ra plays wurlitzer, etc on purple moon. purple night is mostly piano heavy with a little synth. Since I don't own "Purple Night" I'd have to say unequivocally: no I am not. And in answer to, "purple moon does not", I'd have to say unequivocally, yes it does; from my point of view hearing that is. I'm reading about "Purple Night" to get a handle on what you're talking about. Wikipedia says there are 22 members involved. How could that possibly have a distant and lonely sound so it? Especially in comparison to the small group found on "The Night of the Purple Moon" and it's low-fi sound. To each their own I guess and as I haven't heard this album I'll leave the benefit with you. To clarify: I was stating a subjective impression of an album. I wasn't saying 1+1=5, if you know what I mean. Cheers.
  21. Sounds like my kind of piano. Yeah, it's not too bad. Not piano though. Ra plays wurlitzer, moog, celeste, and something called a "Rokiscord". Now that was one beautiful, crazy SoB.
  22. I only have five Sun Ra albums: Space is the Place, Solar Myth Approach 1 & 2, Night of the Purple Moon, and Some Blues But Not The Kind Thats Blue. My favourite is the last one it's almost normal. Then ...Purple Moon although it's a little too spooky. Can't explain it. It plays like the piano sounds of a dead man; far away and numinous.
  23. The number of mine was at #2149. I bought early February when it went into "Last Chance". \ Do they sell them randomly or is this an indication that they only sold around half? As far as the music goes some of it is very good, but I got tired of much of the pop vocal numbers and I hated the final 30 minutes of the set with the belching and what not. : )
