That's surprising. I used to hang out at J&R regularly until 9/11 happened, and they always received new releases on time. I received my copies of these from CD Universe on the release date. If you're interested, they are still bargain-priced there.

Agreed. And a big reason why these are my favorite RTF albums.

Flurin - If you haven't already, check out "En Route Live" or the Trio Beyond recording on ECM for some great (IMO) recent Scofield. I find myself pulling these out (and some of his earliest stuff) more than alot of his BN and Gramavision era recordings nowadays. I also like the MSMW "Out Louder" recording, both the studio and live disc, but that may not be your cup of tea. I saw Scofield tour on the Ray Charles project tour, and thought he (and the material) was better live than on that record. Too many guest stars I suppose. I'm curious about the Piety Street record though, and hope having a vocalist doesn't take the focus off his playing too much. I was referring more to "Shinola" and "Out Like a Light" on Enja ----- pre-Gramavision.

Instead of the Swiss kind of cold? Besides, Sco lives up in Connecticut. So wouldn't it be "CT type of cold"? Btw, my favorite playing by him is a tie between that on his Swallow/Nussbaum albums, and that on his Blue Notes with Lovano/Irwin/Stewart. That was a great band. I never liked his playing with Miles. I much preferred the down and dirty playing of Mike Stern.

Yes and Yes. I have a 1991 Strata-East/Bellaphon CD of it. It's magnificent, as is all of the Tolliver from that period. Thanks, John. I have it on hold at Dusty G, but would be less likely to plunk down $30 for it if someone came out and said it sucked.

Has anyone actually heard the Tolliver? Has it appeared on cd before?

My moles have told me... upcoming Select....

Is this just apathy, or a way to get the last word in? -
Yes that's the one! I had it in my grubby little hands once at the Tower at Lincoln Center years ago, and regretably took a pass because I thought the price was too steep. Little did I know....................

They're also looking into a Keith Jarrett Select of the trio/quartet Atlantic/Vortex recordings. Let the flames begin!!! Including Restoration Ruin? Trpt2345 No. And this Select is by no means definite yet. MC just said in his email to me that it's something he'd LIKE to do. -
What? No Miles?

.......and Willisau 1991, dagnabit!!!

To each his own I guess. Johnny Mac almost seems afraid to take any long gut-wrenching solos. As far as Kenny Garrett goes, I think we all know that he can play. It's what he currently chooses to play that we take exception to. However I don't think he's played as well as he did in the mid 90s when he made that album with Metheny. As a matter of fact, I saw them together with Nat Reeves and Brian Blade, and Kenny just blew the roof off the place. Sorry, but I don't hear that in this recording. FWIW, my favorite track on the Five Peace Band release is "In a Silent Way/It's About That Time" with Herbie guesting. It figures that Chick and John would find their "common ground" on a Miles track.

I believe the Art Farmer Mosaic Single "The Time and the Place" was recorded at MoMA, which still puts on jazz concerts to this day during the summer months. I saw Brandon Ross with Roy Haynes' son Graham on trumpet a couple of years ago. The Philadelphia Museum of Art still puts on jazz concerts YEAR-ROUND. I saw Eric Alexander with Harold Mabern there, and the Maria Schneider Orchestra, and some group called . . . ummmm, let's see . . . what was the name again . . . oh yeah, ORGANISSIMO! The MoMA concerts are outdoors. You're in the Northeast so you know what weather's like in NY in the Winter. The Art After 5 (as they're called) shows at the Philly Art Museum are every Friday evening in the museum's Great Stair Hall, so weather generally isn't an issue. If you're ever in Philly and get a chance to attend, it's well worth it: http://www.philamuseum.org/artafter5/ Thanks! I'll do that.

More hype than substance. Overall, it's ok, with disc 2 being much better than disc 1. The problem for me is that the music does not have any "sustained heat". That and the fact that I'm not crazy about McBride's electric bass playing. FWIW, I believe that the Return to Forever reunion is a much better listen. Oh well. Corea is still a standout musician, but, and I hate to say this, McLaughlin may be on a steep downward spiral, especially considering his last few solo releases.

Yo jazzbo!!! What in heck are you doing online?

thanks for letting me know, Lon. Has anyone heard yet whether a replacement disc for One Step Beyond is available? I've been searching Blue Note's site and other various places on the internet every day for information on this. If anyone should hear about a replacement disc, please either post it here or on the breakout thread that I had created for this. Thanks! Word from Jerry Roche (head of Mighty Quinn) at Mosaic is that the One Step Beyond correction will take about another month.

Speculation was that DG's partnership with Universal for their reissue label might have something to do with it. Thanks. I hadn't even thought of this, and what do you know? It makes sense!!!

Worlds Records usually gets these ahead of all else. Their prices are reasonable, and for orders over $25, shipping is free. I didn't know that Dusty had dropped out of the Andorran reissue game entirely. Is there a reason why?
