  1. The Apollo albums are all live. Pretty much every other JB live album from back in the day is either part or entirely fake.
  2. My father, who was a trumpet player, used to play this record a lot when I was growing up. Yet, it never occurred, even as a potty mouthed juvenile, to me that Mr. Hirt was also playing butt trumpet in this picture. I'll never look at this record the same again. My wife just asked me what I was laughing so hard about and I tried to explain it to her. She just rolled her eyes.
  3. I need to buy another copy of that one of these days. I remember really digging it, and I think I gave it to a friend who dug it even more.
  4. If it's not warped, a Nitty Gritty or VPI will take care of that. Granted, you could buy a new copy for less than that, but these machines pay for themselves, believe me. Luckily I already own a Nitty Gritty. I had a bunch of vinyl get flooded earlier in the year and that thing did pay for itself. Unfortunately, there isn't an equivalent machine for the covers. Oh and tonight...Horace Parlan - Speakin' My Peace, which, in spite of mocking a bit in the thread, is a Music Matters 45 set. Ironically, it's going to have to go back as the first disc has these weird scuffs on it that almost look like someone was trying to draw a square on the vinyl. Sad, as it really is a nice sounding album, but here I tried to get over my fears about any problems and right out of the gate I get a dud. I don't know if that means I was right or if I'm being punished for making fun. LOL
  5. You ask the same question I have. Even if the sound recordings are public domain, wouldn't the label trademarks still be protected?
  6. As an ex-employee of HPB, I can explain the low price. There are two kinds of merchandise they get, the used stuff people bring in and overstock stuff that corporate buys from who knows where. During the time I worked there, Disconforme stuff started appearing (along with Proper boxes) and the prices were usually about $8 for a single disc. This has got to be more of that stuff. The thing I always felt was weird was how all this stuff was ending up in the US as it's gray market as best. I know that they buy out remainders from distributors, so I can only guess they bought this stuff from an overseas distro and since it's just old jazz, no one is getting that upset over it.
  7. Ok, I was checking a new Half Price Books in the area. In addition to a ton of CDs from Gambit, Lone Hill, Definitive, Groove Hut, etc., etc., they had two new vinyl titles in the LP bins, Blakey's Moanin' and Baker/Pepper Playboys. They're obviously new, they have the HPB barcode stickers, etc. Now, both releases are gussied up to look authentic and they're clearly not Scorpio issues. The covers are matte, kind of washed out, flimsier than the Scorpios (although a little thicker, if that makes sense) but the material is almost slick. I don't know how else to describe them other than to say they look European but with lower quality printing than what I see on like a Philips or Deutsche Grammophon. The records themselves are heavier weight than standard, but probably not a full 180 grams. Both albums had an identifying mark of some kind in the dead wax scratched completely out, like an old concert bootleg LP. Moanin' had no additional clues as to it's origin. Playboy had a number on the back (K23P6709) which lead via Google here: http://www.multikulti.com/go/_info/?id=21397 And the label listed...Disconforme. So, anyone else know what I'm talking about? Truly one of the weirder things I've seen in a while. And no, I didn't buy them. They were $8 each, but I opted to spend my allowance on a minty fresh copy of Alligator Boogaloo I was shocked to find rather than some dodgy looking reissues. I am curious to hear what they sound like. My guess would be they sound exactly like a CD put on a record.

  10. Weight of the vinyl doesn't have much to do with the sound quality and these aren't 200 gram releases anyway. How many vinyl issues have there been of Soul Station in the last four or five years? I'm thinking at least one a year or close to it.

  12. My guess is they buy from a distributor and have a very small profit margin on everything because they make it up in volume. Their prices on most anything are the best around and I've bought tons of DVD box set for dirt cheap prices from them (too many sets, judging from the number I've still yet to watch.)
  13. IIRC, I've had more bad than good experiences with them. If they're selling this for $62, it won't be long before others follow.

  15. One needn't listen on computer speakers. I find emusic's mp3s more than acceptable for the cost. And in the case of BS/SN discs, I can barely find/buy them at any price. Same here. I'm really hoping this is the surprise for this reason. My recommendations: the Tim Berne tiles, Julius Hemphill - Fat Man and the Hard Blues, all the World Saxophone Quartet albums, Pieces of Time... Whew. There's a ton of good stuff.
  16. Order of preference: 1. aux in 2. tape adapter 3. FM transmitter I went through a bunch of FM transmitters before I found one that worked, and even then it's not perfect. There's a couple of web sites that can help you find the best frequency to use. The sound however, is less than optimal and the transmitter was expensive ($80). Still, I have to have all options as I change cars often and I never know exactly what I'll have until I get it. (The VW factory iPod kit is absolute garbage, BTW. Anyone considering a VW, get the aux jack instead.)
  17. Too late for that now. Actually, I have some of the older bigger boxes (Miles, Tatum, Rollins, Dolphy) and I really find myself listening to these smaller 5-6 disc sets more often than the 9+ disc sets. I don't know why, but these sets just feel a bit more manageable to me for some reason. I don't think I'd have any idea where to start with the 16 disc monster. I know it is repacakag-itis for many, but I never could justify pulling the trigger for the big set. The small chunks, arranged kind of thematically as these are, make more sense to me. (Truth be told though, if I could find the Debut, Montgomery or Pepper Galaxy set at a decent price, I'd buy in a heartbeat. Especially the Debut set.)
  18. Fearless Leader, Interplay and ??? Anyone know anything about when the last (I assume) set in this series is going to be released? I've been interested in some of the sessions that would be covered and resisted the temptation, but I don't know how much longer I can wait. EDIT: changed the title. Concord owns the catalog, but these are Prestige recordings. Didn't want to be confusing.

  22. Heh. My one William Parker record is him and Matthew Shipp playing Summertime on a 7" and they had to split it up to part 1 & 2 like an old James Brown single. If I ever get a jukebox, it's going in there.
  23. OK, I thought I'd read in a review of the Jazz Band disc that Miles and the rest weren't actually on that track.
